Lads, agreed on the smooth face from a block plane but my old boss was equally as skilled as Robin and would of bollocked me for not having any scratch in my pouch... need it for rounding off and taking off fine hairs after a handsaw cut etc

Call me pedantic but I like to line up the grain of the dowel with the grain of the receiving wood. It only takes a second and is very satisfying to see it all line up and blend in when sanded down.

The amount of times I fit the staircase and trades walk on it as soon as my back is turned, let the glue set! We use Stairbox, always a good fit, providing the initial measurements are good.

Lovely work as always. But at 13:45 Seeing you scrape your chisels like that done me. Got taught to not scrape as it destroys the edge of the chisel. Personally I have noticed how blunt they get after scraping.

When the cordless tool manufacturers first added LEDs to their tools it looked like a gimmick. Now a days every fastener and cut is accompanied by a flash of light and we turn our noses up at any tool without built in illumination. While watching you guys I do wonder how long it will be until they add LEDs to the plastic handle of Robin’s handsaw? Great video and as usual great work!

Your plumb cut for the end of the skirt board is a formula ? The pitch is ( I think u said 41.2 degrees? Take that from 90 degrees 48.8 degrees will fit dead nuts on). You should be between 35-40 degrees on the skirt ? That both sides of the pond average brother. That is a beautiful stair case Robin your a very very good Carpenter! Last of the Mohicans!

Hi Robin, How do you normally finish the gap between the wall and stringer?

Surprised that you notched the structural element (stringer) over the decorative (architrave). I'd always do it the other way around because I always try and preserve the strength as far as feasible and also know that people change decorative elements over time as fashions change.

like the method, but i have one question. I was all ways taught to house the top newel, flush with the back of the top riser, to hook on the trimmer. how come you just butt it in?

As someone who is now to woodwork, I was wondering if you could give me some tips on sharpening my new chisels? They are nowhere near sharp enough from new? What sort of kit would I need to do it as well?

A tormek wetstone is a beautiful thing to own IMO, they start at about £400+ or so which is a lot of chisels, but it will keep your chisels (and more) alive forever! They can work miracles on even the cheapest of chisels (but cheap chisels don't stay sharp for long). There are plenty of on line videos but for a great walk through on sharpening, google "The New Yankee Workshop Sharpening Station S12 E11". In fact, if you are new to woodwork, binge watch New Yankee Workshop, Norm is the international woodworking legend! Timeless.

​@@bobdobalina276 I've never really found the Tormek to be a logical investment if I'm honest. I'm normally the type that splashes out on expensive tools and then goes through the learning practice on those. With sharpening, I started cheap (ish) and just became proficient at it. Whether it is chisels or knives, I've never really found the need for a wheel (I have a small hand cranked one I use for buffing!). As soon as you learn to freehand sharpen, there is very little need to return to the grinder, because it's so quick and clean (and noise free), as well as returning a razor sharp edge. If you're very regularly flattening the backs of chisels or restoring tools, then there would definitely be a benefit, but for most I suspect that would occur only once in each tool's lifetime. Even then, I'd probably look at a cheaper alternative to a Tormek (a record or something), as I'd mostly be using it for cleaning and rust removal rather than sharpening, and I'd be frightened to get such a lovely tool in a state! I find the Tormek fairly niche, and probably not required for most hobbyists or professionals unless they're doing a lot of furniture production or whatever. Obviously, extremely nice to have if you don't care about cost and want the best tool possible.

It's about 1.5 man days, so we did it between us in about 4.5 hrs, it was a bit slow as we where filming!!

Hi Robin, excuse my ignorance, but isn't it an issue if you take some off the bottom riser? Don't all the risers have to be the same height or is there a tolerance that's acceptable for leveling purposes. Thanks

Well the rule is exactly the same... but... you can fine tune any item to level, and 10mm to nothing will be perfectly acceptable, if you where taking off anything more than about 20mm then that may be an issue!!

It's 2mm plus or minus by law It's under k in the building regulations if memory serves me correct but their are different tolerances regarding public semi private and private as their the only 3 set's of regulations hope thst helps 🍺

Hi Robin, just a quick question I noticed the top newel wasn't housed around the trimmer? Is it OK to just have the top tread sat on the trimmer and screw it?

It is really key to make sure the newel is supported, in our case the top newel was supported on the floor below so we where able to allow to not house over the trimmer, it also gives some flexibility when setting up the apron lining and balustrade etc

At 18:17, how did you guys get down the stairs, and is this something that you have to consider when doing stairs on existing buildings generally? I'm assuming that there are plenty of access points on this particular build, but I'm assuming there is a different approach when access is limited to just the point at which your fixing the stair?

Did you allow for the 10mm scribe when you ordered the stairs, or are they now 10mm out over the short run?

All I do is measure the FFL to FFL from the landing at the top to where the base of the newel will sit and then make the stairs fit by adjusting any scribes from that point

Out of interest why do you cut it down the middle of the architrave then rebate as opposed to cutting the string to butt straight up against the architrave?
