I grew up a PA wrestler and have always LOVED this sport. I love the Individuality of said sport because its you and only yourself to blame for your outcome. As everyone knows, PA is a top state for wrestling and while in high school, so many kids loved and talked about the Iowa program. Dan the Man Gable was in charge at that time, and to be honest, most kids had a dream to wrestle for him. Now that the Brands' brothers are in control of that program, they recruit heavily there. The Brands brothers are quite intense as we all know, and so many haters do not like their actions and reactions to certain events of a intense match. They (the Brands) are what wrestling is about. I'm a true Penn State fan and LOVE when we Win, when we beat Ohio St, and when we beat Iowa, but you can't hate on a coach that loves his work, the kids and has a great passion for this sport. It's a great sport with so many different personalities. Cael is a great motivator as is Tom, but because Cael is more reserved, and Tom is more outwardly intense, don't judge or hate, just enjoy this wonderful sport.

But they do good things too. They are not all good or all bad. My advise to folks is: Don’t drink any Kool-aid. Be fans of people , not teams. I used to be an Iowa wrestling fan and still a huge Spencer Lee fan but I think the Brands deserves some criticism. I’m no longer an Iowa fan. 1. Eirman was not legit injury and I’m glad he lost in Nationals. How many forfeits did Iowa have in the Big Ten tournament?…compare that to Penn State and where is the integrity and honesty to the sport? Where is that loyalty? 2. Wrestlers develop at Penn state, they are not at Iowa in my opinion. Did Desanto get better? Did Eirman get better? Did Marinelli get better? How many national champions did Iowa have their in their National championship year?….Brands says we do what’s best for the wrestler, we’ll them winning a national championship would be good for them instead of a team championship and Penn state mops up the mat with Hawkeyes and has nathional champions every year. If Desanto went to Penn state he wins at least one title and Spencer Lee wins national titles no matter where he goes 3. Spencer Lee wrestled with torn knees in 21 but then starts 2022 with those same bad news and drops out….why did they wait? Penn State would have handled it better and took better care of Lee 4. Brands don’t evolve like Cale does. They tried to be smart and thought they were by forfeiting big tens and how did that work out in the nationals? 5. Paid haters?…come on, it’s college wrestling. Who is paying them? It’s Penn state dominating the NCAAs so why not pay people to hate on Penn State. All the secrets, paid haters, everybody wants Iowas head on a stick, conspiracies…come on coach, do you really think that…paranoid much?

@@GosalFam Now correct my memory if I’m wrong but he was wrestling big ten tournament and came out against a wrestler ready to wrestle, I think Sebas but not sure if that is who…BUT that guy forfeited so Eireman won without wrestling…That means Eirman didn’t even wrestle…..but his next match , I think it was the final, he medically forfeited….so when and where did he get hurt? Maybe he got injured in Nationals because I don’t know but maybe it’s karma I remember Brands criticizing Desanto for quitting in a match against penn state RBY a season or two ago when Desanto claimed he injured his knee….were they thinking of Desanto first? Even if I had the talent, I would love to wrestle for Iowa but not the brands. I would wrestle at Penn State, Ohio State Ok State and if I thought I had international dreams, Penn State or wherever Cale is
@GosalFam2 жыл бұрын
@@francostacy7675 it was during the dual, I forget which one but he does that spin move to lock in the crotch and you can instantly tel that he injured his knee, it was before Big 10s. I will look it up if I can. I agree with you that the Iowa style has been passed up by Penn St. having said that let me play devils advocate, who has Cael coached to a D1 national title that wasn’t already ranked 1st as a recruit coming out of high school?
@francostacy76752 жыл бұрын
@@GosalFam Well if that is your angle then don’t give Brands credit for Spencer Lee championships. How did the first two matches go between Desanto and RBY and then compare the rest of their matchups…who improved? Was PS supposed to get all those national champs in 21 as Iowa won the team? I don’t think so, that surprised a lot of experts. How many former champs from other schools want PS training for their senior international careers…why? Nick Lee is another example. He was beaten more than once in high school by Chad Redd. However in college Chad Redd has never beaten Lee. Lee has went on to be two time champ taking out Chad Redd, Eireman, Sebastian Rivera and then beating Yani and Zain in the Olympic trials from a guy who lost a state title his last year…and his freshman year he didn’t get close to a national title…that is wrestler development Where was the wrestler from that took away a national title from Gable Stevenson and it wasn’t supposed to happen…penn state...that is making a wrestler better Remember the guy that upset and pinned Imar when he was on top of the NCAAs…a Penn state guy again

The Brands brothers in my opinion, are thee best coaches, there wrestlers could ask for! They give there athletes everything they need, to become National Champions! But there’s one thing all the greatest coaching in the world can’t give an athlete. That is, MENTAL TOUGHNESS! You can’t coach this! The athletes have to get it on there own and then hang onto it, every time they step on the mat! Not easy to do! But once you have it, you become the complete athlete!

Not a paid hater but.....Did the Brands ever consider that people simply do not like loud mouth coaches that constantly belittle opponents - ie, "he doesn't like tough wrestling" or "I'll take him out"? Not to mention, wrestlers sprinting off the mat and a coach running after them carrying a handful of laundry. Neither is a look that you want to expose to young wresters. I've been to Carver a few times and love the atmosphere and the fan base but the behavior (particularly Terry Brands and Telford) is nothing short of embarrassing for the program.

But an Iowa guy lost a close match. I remember thinking it was a 50/50 call. But it was just like a game of keystone cops. Tom and Terry. Tom would be getting in the refs face, screaming, Terry would grab him. Then Terry starts going after the refs and yelling and pointing and Tom grabs him...and they went back and for...by the time we started taping and counting, NINE TIMES. As a Hokie still pretty pissed off at Brands and still seems pretty disengenuous here. He blames Dresser for VT not releasing "his" wrestlers after taking on the Iowa position, but that probably was the AD Jim Weaver's doing at the time, Weaver was pretty torqued by it especially when it was one of those sports he really backed, getting Brands in the first place seems pretty miraculous. He was otherwise known for his cheap, down-the-hall hires for unprofitable sports. I'm thinking Brands likes to twist the truth a bit to fit his narrative by making it Dresser who blocked the transfer. I have debated the fairness of Weaver's stance, and of course, these days it's pretty automatic with the portal in college sports, they're kids right? but can understand - sure, somewhat vindictive - choice here when having his trust broken. Dresser really paid his dues, 29 years in the area, eight years at Grundy, which is waaaay out there, coal country and a lot of poverty. Eight state championships in eight years. Christiansburg which is near Blacksburg and five state championships. It was really incredible that VT had this guy in their backyard when Brands bolted. You kinda wonder why they didn't see that in the first place, maybe had visions of Dresser feeding VT or something. Finallly, his long stint at VT. Even at VT he's worked with the local high schools to develop their talent. It says something about home or ambition or likely a much larger paycheck that he went to Iowa State, after 29 years Virginia easily could have been home for him. He even left us in good stead hiring his assistant Robie who, you know, has carried on respectably. I'm even set up to go down and watch a duel Jan 6th I think. The point here is that no one at VT begrudges his leaving, and we all wish him well. Anyway, thanks for the backstory, always just saw this as a VT thing, but can see the story is much more complicated, we were just one little part of the intrigues eminating from the state of Iowa. But, you're right it's just a game and a lot of fun to raise the temperature in the room on gameday. Even has guys like me who never wrestled (had some friends in high school who wrestled including a state champion) and have no dog in the fight keeping tabs on Iowa - Iowa State. 18-15 just a couple weeks ago btw. One more story: There's a website that covers VT sports read mostly football and basketball but mostly football. The aforementioned Jim Weaver wasn't having anyone at the university give them the time of day even sending a few cease and desist letters (unfairly in my opinion) Well, Dresser didn't care, he saw the usefulness of getting on the message board and talking up wrestling at VT, what a surprise to see a coach getting on and mixing it ups with fans on the board, no stone unturned. Admired that.
