With regards to the turbo cooling system, typically that's running through the engine coolant side as is my understanding. From a thermal view, the turbo's going to run significanlly hotter than the intercooler system as a whole, my concern would be heat soak over time building in your charge coolant. I'd honestly try and figure out if you could pull coolant from the engine side of things, that port in the head that's currently blanked off seems a good way to go and returned into the system post pump so it helps warm things up to operating temp. Though I can imagine there's going to be other people better qualified than i am who knows better on this.

You are 100% correct in this sf. The intercooler system and the cooling system for a vehicle work at two different operating ranges. The fluid that is used to cool a turbo charger would increase the air/water temps regardless of where you plumb it into that system and make it more difficult to achieve the cold intake air charge temps you are looking for. Adding a water cooled turbo into the engine coolant circuit will actually even cause the engine coolant temps to rise if you don’t have a cooling system that can overcome the extreme water temps that are being introduced into the system by the turbo. I have seen this on a turbocharged e36m3 with a stock cooling system where a water cooled turbo was installed in the place of a non cooled unit.

My dad had a '79 308GTB that kept getting passed on the straights by all the v-12s. The exhaust would glow red, so we opened up the exhaust like a potato and put a '70 Camaro SS 350 muffler inside of the shell. It sounded amazing and the top-end horsepower gain was enough to now put up a fight on the track.

That engine compartment looks amazing. I'm really paranoid about these things, so personally I'd have some coolant circulating in that system from day one. It would be a shame to have that engine start rusting from the inside out. I drain and fill with water for events that prohibit coolant, then partially drain and top off with coolant immediately following. Also, a friend has a vacuum radiator purging system, or something like that, that works very well to fill a system and leave no air in it. Essentially it creates a vacuum in the cooling system, then you fill that vacuum with coolant. Worth looking into, they're not expensive.

@@Jscy4662 That causes it's own set of problems. I'm into vintage Alfas, that means aluminum blocks and heads, cast iron liners. Having a single rubber pipe in the plumbing is maybe a good idea because if something happens and the cooling system gets a very high pressure spike then the rubber tube will burst and probably save the radiator, inter-cooler or pump seals from over-pressure damage.

Other people have touched on this but anytime you have dissimilar metals in water there's going to be galvanic corrosion. Some metals are worse than others but aluminum and copper are both pretty reactive. Antifreeze has additives in it that both lubricate pumps and seals but also inhibit corrosion. Some companies make a coolant additive that does just those things and can be used instead of antifreeze in areas that don't freeze. The other option is using only 1/4 or 1/8 antifreeze instead of 1/2. Coolant additive is a better route especially because like you said antifreeze isn't allowed on the track.

You may see some heat build up if you put a shroud I’ve the radiator. Instead attach the fan directly to the rad and then vent the air out of the hood. You should try to increase the velocity of the air on the front facing side of the radiator with some ducting about 1/3 the size of your radiator and seal it all with the hood.

With the mix of metals in your build (aluminium, brass, steel, copper at least) electrolytic corrosion will be a major problem using either tap water or distilled water. You need some kind of corrosion inhibitor, in Europe we use coolant containing the required inhibitors but if you are not allowed to use that there must be a solution used in California racetracks. The only other alternative is to drain down the car when it is not used but that is a bad idea since it introduces oxygen, which all helps to make the corrosion worse.

I'm enjoying your project immensely! Hopefully you will be able to chase all the air out of both the engine and intercooler systems - if not, have you thought of a vacuum assist coolant fill system? Works for me! Regarding the intercooler, once you get the engine up and running, you will be able to get a good idea of the actual intercooling needs of the system - the actual cooling needs might be modest enough to allow the use of a glycol based coolant (instead of 100% water) to avoid freeze and corrosion damage. Do not use distilled water, you really want some kind of corrosion protection, at least. The turbo bearing is designed to be cooled by the engine coolant - using the intercooler loop (with no glycol coolant) could result in boiling problems and corrosion problems at the bearing hosing, not to mention an additional heat load. Consider using the engine coolant system for this purpose.

speaking from experience with my air to water, and water cooled turbo on the same cooling system, you should throw another smaller pump in the water tank and run dedicated line to the turbo by itself. i had problems on my drag car after 4-5 seconds at 40 psi of boost the turbo was warming up the water too much so i had to pumb its own pump. now i can run wide open throttle all day long and temps dont move. my engine 3.0 liter with a 66mm turbo for reference and i have that same intercooler.

The whole reason for coolant and ITS properties is that is raises the boiling point which for water is 212, with coolant much higher as 230-250. Without coolant you run the risk and more than likely over heating issues. Especially since you are running a turbo.

Some of the OEMs do use a hardline to get most of the way to the turbo, or even all the way to the turbo. I've worked on various turbo Nissans and Subarus that were like this (and a few air-cooled turbo Porsches) , but it's been a few years so I forget exactly which had what (and most eventually were replaced with other types of lines, so that adds to the memory fuzz 😅).
