Been professionally grooming for 15 years. Using a de-tangler, a little slickering the dog before the bath, bathing it, conditioner, good rinse, and blowing it out, would have easily dematted that dog. You can't just stick a comb in unbrushed (yes, you brush BEFORE combing), unbathed fur and claim its too matted to save. It wouldn't have been much extra work. I would never recommend brushing out extremely matted dogs, because I'm comfort before vanity, but honestly, that would have been easy to take care of. I don't work in a strip shop though. We do a LOT of guard cuts (mostly 1+ inches). So I can recognize when someone just wants to hurry up and get it done for the least amount of effort. To be fair, that was a very overweight dog, and that makes things more difficult. But I can not blame her for fighting you on her face. Sometimes going a little slower instead of quickly jabbing the clippers at a dog's face will make them feel more at ease about what you're doing. I don't agree with the others concerning the sweet talking, because I find that makes the dog more wiggly and excited, but you really do seem all about the Rush Rush Rush to earn a quick buck.

Teaching him to walk uo the stairs to get on table and mat ( large dog kennel and old exercise roll out mat) brush him up etc. i went thru 7 German Shepherds and now I enjoy brushing a whole lot! They were a big chore and the hair pules all over me and everywhere no matter how often i brushed them up! Poodles dont shed and its such a pleasure to brush them

Poodles are way easy to maintain at home. A light weight no residue detangler mist to Comb thru every other day. Slicker line brush completely every week. Full Groom every 4-8 weeks depending on growth.
@matthirn78585 жыл бұрын
I do my two at home and the weekly maintenance is a breeze if they are kept fairly short, but that full groom every six weeks is a significant time commitment. I love my poodles, but the breed is definitely high maintenance for grooming.
@ShayTBD5 жыл бұрын
I guess it's all relative. The hair on my head's curl pattern is 20x tighter than a poodle. So to me the hair on a poodle is cake to maintain. The LONGER it is the EASIER it is to maintain because you can pre-stage it. Or as in my community leave it in a "protective" style that keeps it from getting tangled. But I can and do understand the difference in perspectives.
@MsCandy445 жыл бұрын
Poodle mixes are a bit more difficult since there are two kinds of fur growing at the same time so the shedding one gets easily stuck in the poodle hair which is why i need to brush my dog almost daily

I've had a standard poodle that sadly got this matted from swimming over a period of a few days while we were camping. When we got home I bathed her first with condoning shampoo and then used a heavy conditioner on her. Used a grooming blowdryer that if used correctly will let you know where any mats are left. She did still have some mats, but nothing super bad that I couldn't get out using a de-matting razor or some scissors to cut through them. I would never cut a pink skinned Poodle down with a #10 blade. Their skin is super sensitive and a few hours after being shaved they will start scratching. Ugg :(

Dogs respond much better to a kind tone in your voice, and to praise. This groomer sounds annoyed and irritated at Willow. I think Willow is so well behaved. Of course she would feel anxious, having a stranger touch her body and having her head strung up while her fur is cut. All the groomer does is reprimand her! instead of praising and positively reinforcing her good behaviour. That poor dog can sense the groomer's attitude. I have noticed that many poodle groomers are insensitive to the dogs feelings. My labradoodle enjoys being groomed because it is a positive experience; she is constantly encouraged and praised.

Never really understand how people can not brush their dogs, and cats unless the animal doesn't like it. I have a Siamese cat, and he could easily be extremely low maintenance, but he honestly, really enjoys being brushed. I've had a rough Collie, a couple of Shelties, and a Himalayan cat in the course of my life, those guys were really all about just brushing, and bathing them. I personally tend to see brushing as a potential bonding experience, and thus far that philosophy has worked well for me. My sister has a 12 year old toy poodle, but she had to go out of town for over a month so my mother, and I had to take care of him this whole time. Thank God I live next door to my 80 year old mother, I've given my sister's poodle two baths, gave him a clean face, and clipped his body down. His name is Dewey Ray, and my cat and I really love him very much! I really think my mother has the harder job, because she is the one who has to give him his insulin shots twice a day. He's a bit of a handful, but I think this stuff would be easier if we had a table. I'm totally just an amateur, but I love watching videos, and helping out with Dewey Ray! I wonder if I'm wrong... is it really that hard for people to brush their pets?

Hi dede. I watch your videos faithfully but rarely comment. I have been grooming for 30 years and learned on my poodles and 70+ foster poodles. I guess I know something! My question or suggestion is: have you ever tried using your forced air to blow the dirty coat first, before any trimming? I've done this numerous times on shelter/foster dogs specifically. The hair and dirt are much easier to trim and you can use a longer.blade for a bit of a longer coat. Doesn't take much extra time.

Unless you’re a groomer, don’t tell a groomer that she’s being insensitive. Y’all are the reason that groomers have to deal with snobby dogs that are naughty. Willow was awesome, but even little jerks and pulls can make the clippers cut her. Which is more important to a groomer than babying the dog. Most brush (and/or comb) their dog(s) daily or every other day, depending on their cut, and maintain their hair really well without any problems. I guess we'll see what my dog's hair will require in the future. Anyway, my point was that no matter what breed and hairtype a dog is, I think it's horrible not to give the dogs the time and treatment that they need. Someone who doesn't have time to brush (or comb, or use whatever tool they feel works best) their dog, shouldn't have a dog that needs daily/weekly grooming. Even the most low-maintenance dog needs a wash every now and then and have their nails clipped.

I have the Andis clipper and cannot get the blade off without prying it off with a flathead screwdriver. Maybe I have small hands, but what is the trick?

My trick , when a client wants a little bit of hair on top of the head , I know guards won’t glide through if they have some matting/knotting, so I use my curve shears and snip it short to the length that I need it to be so it’s easier to brush out or d-Matt the dog

I see comments of the dog needing more praise and I actually disagree. I have a mini schnauzer with the same temperament that also thinks that if she just avoids it that I will say "okay fine you dont have to" and if I baby her then she really throws a pity party but if I have the "fact of the matter is, this has to get done" she behaves much better like this Willow did. My dog also turns the head away at every chance she gets, and pulls her paws and tries to sneak away etc and at almost 16 now I've definitely learned that having a gentle touch shows just as well that you won't hurt them as a stream of nice words might. This matter of factly "I'm going to do your face now" attitude is what made the face done so well because this personality type feels secure with the matter of factly but gentle touch type. I can't believe how matted she was and it must be a relief to have all that off!

Willow have such a benevolence behavior. That’s all wrong in so many places for her to come from a groomer with anxiety, what the heck was they doing to such a sweet dog. That’s all over now Willow, you’ve met the best in the west with Lady D! Shalom!

My neighbor just got a Labordoodle (sp) and it's a 6 months old pup & gosh is he growing fast, the guy lets him roam, I watch him run & jump, eating fish from the river banks like yesterday he ate 2 fish he found, I hope this neighbor (he just moved in 3 months ago) understands his dog is going to have to be groomed frequently! Eep. living here on the river & we have sandy soil.

Great job! I have a toy poodle and the work you had to put into this girl was immense. You will sleep good tonight. The owners need to watch this groom and hopefully not put their poodle and groomer in this position again!! 👍🏻👏🏼👍🏻

@sandrastory5893 жыл бұрын
Deedee you are a fantastic groomer! What is your opinion on shaving dogs whiskers? I get most fur removed from my shih tzu just to keep him clean but do have them leave his moustache and tail plus ears long.
@matthirn78585 жыл бұрын
My two standards don't need daily brushing, but this kind of matting will happen if the brushing that is done is not followed with the comb to ensure that it is mat free each time. The owners of this dog may not have a proper blow dryer for her and that will also make for more matting as it will dry in tight ringlets without blowing the coat out after the bath. Willow was looking pretty rough. Nice job grooming Willow. It is good to see that even the pros sometimes find the feet challenging.

Matt, an expert on matts! Sorry, couldn't resist. Bathing and conditioning of the coat would have made this clip far more comfortable for this dog. Ask any man who gets his beard trimmed without shampooing first. I stopped watching this after a few minutes - people should not clip a dirty dog.
@PudelsRule5 жыл бұрын
I stopped watching her SHAVE a dirty face - she is looking around because it hurts pulling her skin with the blade. I bet she got irritated afterwards. So sad. SHAVE clean dogs only! ugh - hope I don't ever come across this woman grooming a Poodle again.
@PudelsRule5 жыл бұрын
If anyone ever did this to one of my Poodles ......well, of course they wouldn't....I would not permit.....this is very unprofessional clipping a dirty WHITE (sensitive skinned) Poodle.
@matthirn78585 жыл бұрын
@@PudelsRule I would imagine that every groomer would agree that bathing, blowing out the coat and brushing are optimal. My thought was that the presence of mats from head to toe was the reason for the radical approach. I think that most of us would rather watch a video of an ideal grooming session where the client brings in a dog with a properly maintained coat and the groomer demonstrates the skill and artistry of their profession.

You are a fabulous groomer/teacher! This is not the first time I've watched your videos. I'm impressed. Willow & you got through it and sure looks fabulous. My standard poodle is almost 2 y/o. He's a rescue, is patient with good manners. I've done mats, will continue our work next week. He did very well with the trim a few days ago. My husband assisted with the face especially. Next week I'm buying new equipment: slicker brush, comb, plus detangler mist, plus the Andes with #7 & 10 blades. I have experience with miniature poodle and a standard schnauzer prior. Thank you for this wonderful video. :-)

What are the best clippers to use on a standard poodle? I have used so many clippers and they just stopped working cuase the hair is so long now. I started scissor cutting him but now the scissors no longer want to work. What would be the best thing to use

What a sweet dog. Very overweight though. And WOW! Nails that are way too long.
@Ksweetpea5 жыл бұрын
Agreed, very overweight and that is probably the "tired" feeling she was talking about. 6yo is mature but not at all old for a standard poodle. She "feels" much older

My dog is over weight too probably by 10 lbs, she steals the yorkies food "all the time", I've taken her to the dog park to run but she's afraid of the bigger dogs, due to my son's husky always attacking her. I have a fenced yard, not a big yard but she can run in it pretty well, she's just a laid back dog, not high energy.

You have made Willow a very, very happy dog!! My goodness! What an amazing job you did with a very uncomfortable girl! Her parents will realize that once they get used to her change. She looks wonderful!! I know many poodles that would choose you to make them clean and comfortable 'in their skin' !! Excellent job!
@ayerimcontle34454 жыл бұрын
I just really dislike people who buy poodles because they’re “cute fluffy girly” dogs! Owners need to do their research and realize that there is no other dog like the poodle when it comes to grooming and they HAVE to be brushed almost daily! Also I’m not sure if Willow is pure bred or a cross but her body seems on the bigger side of the scale which worries me for her health. Overall props to the groomer, great job and well there was nothing else she could do besides shave her :/

A dog being groomed since they were a pup end up being very well behaved. My poodle behave like Willow because I desensitized her since she was a pup. Makes grooming so much easy. I have to comment on this though, but that tail dock. I never seen a standard poodle docked tail looking like that. Also, he is overweight. My poodle watch her weight as poodle tend to eat on an off throughout the day to maintain their body weight.
@alisonl67672 жыл бұрын
It's just hair. It will grow out. I think the owners will be more likely (and be more capable) to take care of the grooming now that they have a fresh start. I bet the dog will be more active now, too. 😉 A super short cut may not be prettiest on a poodle, but this was great, in this case...

I had a teacup and toy poodles and learned to groom them and always combed them out I had a pole and a hole set up, and really enjoyed grooming them, they never tried to bite or whine. I took them once in awhile to the groomer she always commented on how well behaved they were. I miss them.

My sweetheart was a Toy Poodle BRAT and nipped and bit - had to be groomed with a soft muzzle - BANNED from several major chains...RIP Duchess Pup...I miss you. And she was groomed every 6-8 weeks from age 5 months when I got her. I paid $50 to get her groomed for 13 years! She bit at me when I bathed her in the tub - and believe me she knew I was the alpha dog - she just couldn't help it...but would follow commands and respond to 200 words...maybe she did outsmart me....poodles ya know...

What kind of clippers clipper brand do you use?
@MALCOLMRay-v9x3 ай бұрын
WHAT BRAND CLIPPERS DO YOU USE. WHATEVER THEY ARE, THEY SEEM TO GLIDE THOUGH POODLE HAIR SO EFFORTLESSLY. I have been hand cutting my poodles for probably 25 yrs (scissors). The dogs pretty much enjoy our "bonding" time together, but I must admit it is quite a lot of work, and the finished product of course is somewhat crude and uneven. I really need good clippers that actually work on dog coats.....thank you
