Not having a good standing guillotine choke defense in BJJ can be a nightmare if you like to go for takedowns. If you're guillotine choke defense lacks, you'll often find that you're more prone to being gun with your takedowns in fear of the choke.
You can see the first part of this video here : • Guillotine Choke Defen...
In this video I demonstrate a couple of options you can use to defend against a standing guillotine choke using takedowns. I show a setup for a single leg takedown and a setup for a double leg takedown.
The linchpin to this defense is having a quick response early on. If your head shoots up early enough you'll have a much better chance to defending the guillotine choke.
In addition to getting your head up and back arched. You can step to the side to create angles which makes the takedowns possible.
If getting caught in the guillotine choke is a problem you have. Check out this video. These techniques have worked amazing for me over the years.
I used to have problems with getting caught in guillotine chokes, now I don't.
Hope the video helps you avoid getting choked when you're shooting in for takedowns.

Also Doug, my guess is that it would be good to also get close with your hips while standing up, perhaps clinching him or something similar.

I train this defense at my gym with a step out like you show, but instead of a takedown, we sit down and push off the thigh and bridge through with the hips. Land in side control if you get it right, but I usually throw the guy completely off me and end up in a scramble.

i compete amateur mma with years of bjj and wrestling as my base but for the past 2-3 years have pretty much only focused on striking, obviously to round out my style but also because i enjoy striking in mma so so much. i almost never work on my ground game anymore because i’m very confident in my ability, whether it be takedown defense to stay up or consistently out positioning my opponent if it does go to the ground. this being said i was recently completely caught off guard by a short stocky guy that would jump up on me and sneak in guillotines throughout our match. he was very strong and always dropped his feet for a standing guillotine after he jumped onto me, and having neglected grappling for so long i completely blanked on a reversal technique like this. this guy threw out this standing guillotine 9 times during our match, and everytime all i could think to do was to fall and pass to side control to escape. i rarely see people who consistently attempt guillotines so i was very caught off guard, and my neck hurt SO bad the whole next week. apparently he watched my film and caught that i was rusty in this aspect. needless to say i revisit this video and others like it before my fights for good luck now, so thanks for the video LOL!

You can even perform a blood choke with the shoulder if they do a guillotine on the ground and you rotate to the opposite side, drive the shoulder into the neck and they will release or go to sleep.

At 1:55, couldn't the opponent just not let go of the guillotine and turn slightly causing you to face-plant into the ground as you do that takedown?
@Jm-dx9tl

No. What leverage is he using to do that, you can’t hip toss somebody if their hips are back. You’d be exposing your own back since they’re already circling to the right. If you turn that way rather than stay squared up or turning with them you’re a goof lol

I personally can never finish a standing guillotine or have one finished on me unless the person's back is pressed against the wall/cage. I find when someone shoots a standing guillotine they are trying to also pull guard so this is a great counter to it though.

when you do the standing straight up move, can you reach with your left hand and grab their right hand and apply pressure to help drive yourself behind their back, or perhaps drive them to the ground from this kimura like movement ?
@joetalley192
@joetalley192 2 жыл бұрын
I do it all the time. I take a sumo step past the side that's attempting the choke, and catch the arm close to a kimura. Even the partners that learn this and counter it are easy to beat. Grab the elbow drop and sit into a fireman's carry. Boom. Now you've got side control.
