For months, Native Americans have been protesting against the Dakota Access oil pipeline, a multibillion-dollar construction project that tribal leaders say is threatening sacred sites as well as the tribe's source of drinking water.
Protests against the project have been growing since April. Since then, thousands of people, including tribes across the US, have joined historic demonstrations in support of the Sioux.
In December, the Obama administration handed them a victory, denying a final permit the company needed and saying different routes for the pipeline would be sought.
But the election of Donald Trump has cast doubt on that decision, and the company in charge of constructing the Dakota Access Pipeline says it isn't backing down.
Fault Lines examines the case against the pipeline, connecting it to other fights being waged by US tribes that have helped build the growing movement at Standing Rock.

@@BFaluup water is literally the basis of all man made items. It is the basis of life. Mni Wiconi is Lakota for 'water is life". Mni Wiconi is what we chanted every single day at camp because it is real. Life would cease to exist without clean water for every living thing but all of us on this planet can live without the products made with it. Never the less, our societies are built on machines so it's unrealistic to suggest we do away with all of them but it is reasonable to ask that all people be prudent in the use all machines. We must live in harmony rather than the mindset of conquer. Life would improve vastly if the entire planet dialed back on abuses of Mother...of Water. Balance and harmony.

The black snake is real. It's a memory from those who lived a long time ago. I first heard about the black snake prophecy from my dad who heard it from his grandparents as a child. Who heard it from their grandparents. That makes it a thing that was heard over 120 years ago. Who knows how much longer. My dad n his parents thought it was the highways. My generation knows better now. I'm here watching this happen. So is my son. Yes the highways and railroads created bad things being built on bodies. But what is really ruining the earth and humanity beyond what any of us know any more?

My problem with all of this is these sacred burial sites that no one knew about before this event. My grandfather is buried on BLM land that at one time was private property. His grave site is registered with the state and federal government. By federal law access to the site has to be maintained for family and friends to visit. I forget the exact measurements for the easement but nothing can legally disturb his gravesite. Why haven't these people registered their ancestors grave sites that are off Rez? Lesson for any tribe now is to start the legal process to get these locations registered before it comes to a he said she said argument.

I have a question for American Indian nationalists. I am a European nationalist and I instinctively sympathize with American Indians wanting to control what happens on THEIR OWN land. However I have yet to encounter a single instance of an American Indian standing up for MY right to exist. So forgive me if I am less than eager to stand up for your right to exist. So my question for you is, given that many of your fellow nationalists actively belittle and degrade my right to exist, why should I do anything for you? I will grant you that historically, our two people have been adversaries. But if you will not change, why would you expect us to change? If you continue to treat us as enemies, why would you expect us to treat you as friends?
@antoniog.7069

You can't really blame natives for feeling the way they do about Europeans especially considering the long history of mistreatment & deceit they and their ancestors have endured due to white oppression. They're still being treated poorly by whites to this very day all across the nation. More & more of their land keeps getting either desecrated or taken - or both. Their culture is ignored with many Europeans actually encouraging the riddance of indigenous culture in favor of assimilation. Those left on reservations are poverty-stricken due to insufficient funding from the government. Not to mention the fact that many cold-hearted whites try to capitalize on native misery by opening liquor stores near their reservations so they can reel them into becoming regulars who drink themselves to death because of depression stemming from the oppression they still receive today. Natives' ancestral homelands - including lands that they should be the rightful owners of as a result of treaty negotiations; lands that have traditionally sacred sites including graves - are still being desecrated by buildings, factories, railroads, etc... The modern-day native is forced to live life the way the U.S. government wants them to - natives can no longer live like they used to, hunt like they used to, and many have been displaced far away from their homelands on unfamiliar lands that are useless for cultivation so they can no longer grow plants like they used to. If I experienced both the past & modern-age history that the natives experienced, I myself would probably be reluctant to fight for European rights in lands that they themselves stole - many of whom who had ancestors that are known for deceit & mistreatment towards natives, so if their ancestors were like that then their descendants can surely inherit their ways as well, and many of them clearly have with how the native oppression continues into this day & age - so the better question is, who can a native actually trust? Not to mention the criticism that natives themselves would receive from other natives for fighting for the rights of a group of people that have stolen their land & oppressed them for years. With all the neglect & under-appreciation natives & their culture have endured, its no wonder why they don't want to fight for white rights in this stolen land. They don't feel appreciated, wanted or loved - and there's really no justifiable reason for this type of treatment towards them. Would *you* be happy to fight for the rights of a people that have a history of invading your land, desecrating it, taking it, killing off much of your people's population, and still deliberately mistreat you to this day? The very people that killed off your culture and prohibit you from living the way your ancestors lived? I'm not saying that I won't fight for the rights of Europeans in this country, as they are also my people on my father's side - but natives are also my people on my mother's side as well, and I take into consideration their feelings & experiences. Europeans have human rights, but so do natives; especially in their homelands.
