I think storywise, the first Doctor had just left. The Dalek at Totter's Lane knew this, but couldn't interfere in events that could threaten its own survival. This is why that Dalek had to let the first Doctor leave before beginning its search for the Hand of Omega.

It didn't need a rest. It had some superb writers who were taking it into new areas and it had a real sense of direction and purpose. What it needed was some respect from certain areas of the BBC, being taken out of the soap slot time, and a far bigger budget. I remember something from Doctor Who Magazine where it was stated that the visual effects for one episode of Red Dwarf at the time cost the same amount as an entire season of Who. That's just mental. Rather interesting to think that for all the funding RD got, it's now on a different channel and yet Who is still going. Perhaps what Doctor Who needs next is to leave the BBC and to go elsewhere.
@archive9796
@archive9796 7 жыл бұрын
Soundbelch well the only reason it took a rest was because Moffat was busy and the BBC didn't plan ahead and neither didn't anyone working on the show also they don't have the money to show the Olympics and DW Also having a whole year break especially in this current climate of cut throat TV and Netflix is a very very bad thing plus taking them off Netflix and not doing there own worldwide service

I can't say I agree (not fully, anyway). The show was on such a clear downward spiral, yes, yet this era of ClassicWho was on the verge of heading towards themes of mystery and personal darkness even before McCoy took over. We only got the tip of the iceberg in his last two seasons, so if you can picture for a moment your favourite McCoy episodes while ramping the personal Ace/Doc dynamic up, splicing the show with 7's very noticable dark and manipulative ways, along with relatable themes that people could have appreciated, I still think that just good writing and focus on solving alien mysteries to compliment it may have been enough. The budget was most definitely one of the most noticeable hurdles, but it's clear from episodes like Ghost Light (just the look and atmosphere alone) that they could have made some exceptional looking episodes with the bare minimum, even if it meant sacrificing huge-alien stuff in place of a more 'Dark Doctor Detective' style (focusing more on acting and mystery than big effects every second episode). Imagine if Ghost Light wasn't a confusing mess - the look and style of it, the Doc/Ace chemistry playing on her fears // dislike of Doctors path to darkness, some alien mysteries that dig up more backstory on the Doctor, who has delved so deep into his chess-master role that nobody can suss him out anymore. It'd have been simple, but quite possibly brilliant. Just my 2cents.

@@AubreySciFi Is it not still on a budget now? Anyway, I can't see that that effect would have been too expensive to do, just very time consuming. I'd imagine that using effects with lots of explosions would be more expensive whereas this is mainly video work maybe with some kind of overlay recorded onto the film over what was there before? (I don't know much about how you overlay cartoon images for example over what has already been recorded on film). Actually I think these would be recorded on some kind of video cassette, not regular film? I might be wrong. This is the story where the doctor changed from being a clown to being the dark chessmaster. When davros scolded the doctor for being just a simple timelord, he fixed him a pityful but steely expression and said, " oh davros, I'm far from being just an ordinary timelord" and for some reason, they cut that scene out of the transmitted version!

I don't need to write BETTER than someone else, that's a weird standard. I have to be able to spot it when I do something like that, so I can spot it when others do it too. Not sure why you think that. The Gold channel has not shown classic stories for many years now. The last time they ran pre 2005 Doctor Who was a few Tom Baker stories back in 2007 when the channel was called G.O.L.D. That lasted for about 2 months. The last time the show had consistent repeats was during it's UK Gold era in the 90's. No UK TV channel is currently airing episodes of classic Doctor Who. WATCH repeats the modern series on an endless loop however...

I'm really excited for the Zygons, i havnt seen them in their original serial yet (though if i see it in HMV il buy it), but i did enjoy them when they appeared in the book 'sting of the zygons'. And i feel the 50th anniversary would not be complete without the daleks and the cybermen.....

There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, where seas sleep, and rivers dream, with people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice, somewhere else the tea's getting cold. Come on Ace, we've got work to do!

The destruction of Skaro didn't really stick. At any rate, it's not just Seven and the original who've been to Totter's Lane. Wasn't Six there in his Cybermen story? And Eleven is headed there later this year, very likely bringing Ten and maybe even Hurt with him.

Just check it out on dailymotion . com. You can find most if not all Dr Who episodes there, if you dig around a bit.

May have started out watching modern series in 2005 but have got in to watching old ones like this later on. This could explain why there are like the weak points in the rift, later on around the school. later on after the reboot, and the dalek from Witches familiar, I guessed it's origin having watched this older episode, several times before the stated story so realised some references, which go back decades. Not all stories may be scary or a good one but I find this to be in the enjoyable category, however bad old effects seem nowerdays.

just wanted to say that the second soldier shot by the dalek and thrown against the fence was a stuntman/actor called " tip tippng" he has starred in lots of movies/tv shows , like death wish 3, return to oz and he even played one of the non speaking colonial marines in aliens to name a few..

Make it so! That cliffhanger at the end of Episode One is only matched by the end of The Pandorica Opens, in my opinion! Come on, BBC, you know Remembrance is absolutely brilliant, just show the younger generation that Doctor Who was just as good then as it is now!

It should, Invasion was great, but trust me, if you watch Tomb of the Cybermen or Earthshock, you will be blown away from how awesome they are.

Mine are The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang and Remembrance of the Daleks, Eleven's my favorite Doctor, but The Curse of Fenric is on my top ten, and Battlefield, The Happiness Patrol, Survival, and Paradise Towers are pretty high up.

There are 10 classic dalek designs (not including supreme and special weapons) and A dalek was killed in planet of the daleks which was pure and the special weapons dalek wasd featured in the asylum and it was an impure dalek.

Well, as much as do like Tenant as the Doctor, once I look at 'The Doctors' objectively and avoid an emotional attachment to Christopher Ecclesson caused by him being the first doctor i ever saw, I'd say Hartnell's my favourite Doctor. Iv loved the other classic serials I'v seen, I just felt rememberance was a little flat, it lacked the atmosphere of say 'Genisis of the Daleks' or 'The Dalek Invasion of Earth', but i did enjoy it overall, and i did say i was prepared to give it a second chance

Cool, I haven't seen either yet but hope to at some point. Problem with that theory is that Planet of the Daleks is set after The Daleks as Thals history includes the Doctor being there when the Thals broke into the Dalek City and had three companions with him. Doctor Who continuity is unfortunately a big mess but I guess that's what you get when you have a show that's been around for 50 years.

That is a brilliant cliffhanger, but sadly I haven't been able to see the serial in full, only the clip of said clifhanger on youtube, iv always wanted to see it but its nevar in the classic who section of HMV (and i dont like buying things online). But on the subject of black and white cybermen serials, how about when they climbed out the sewers in the invasion??? I got goosebumps!!!!!
