Stanek Gallery Presents a Northern Liberties Satellite Show

Stanek Gallery has announced a unique art exhibit, another first for Philadelphia’s newest art gallery. This “satellite exhibition” is being presented at the Penn Treaty Village Penthouses at 1 Brown Street, where it can be viewed for the next 6 months. Penn Treaty residents as well as the general public are invited to view this showing of exceptional works by some of Philadelphia’s best known contemporary artists.

It's a wonderful gallery and social center with wonderful exhibitions. I wish I lived in Philadelphia instead of Salem, Oregon so I could visit in person. It's also an intergalactic reference point. Even flying saucers drop in to check out the shows.

There is gallery called Kettle's Yard, in Cambridge, UK. It is (almost) simply the house of the original collector. Guests are invited to treat it as their own.. sit in the armchairs, read the books from the shelves. The experience is of living with the work, rather than going out especially to see it. A lot of quietly penetrating art really needs this. (My favourite example, there, an Alfred Wallis in the bathroom, on the floor, propped against the skirting board, just where you could see it if you were taking a bath!) Long live shows outside the white box. Long live the kind of gentle, enduring work that doesn't really get a look in, in the major public galleries.

I think that is a great idea. Both the English gallery and Stanek sees the value of letting people experience art in a real life living environment! So much art is on massive white walls in cavernous gallery spaces, antiseptic, cold, sterile, the opposite of what art should be all about!
