Impostor syndrome is common, especially in high-achievers, women and under-represented minorities. And it’s problematic because it threatens our efforts to promote diversity in the workplace. If you struggle with impostor syndrome, you’re not alone. Talk about it with someone you trust. You’ve worked hard to be where you are. This video was directed by Maya Adam MD (madam@stanford.edu) Animation by Matt Torode and original soundtrack by Misha Seeff.

All day, everyday, every moment I'm on call, every time I get paged for a critically ill patient... that is why I don't stop over-studying, hopefully one day I'll be able to shake the feeling away.

When I saw the "You've worked hard to be where you are" I cried. I'm currently studying at the hardest university in my field in my country and lately I have been failing. And that really hit me hard because I have always been/felt as the worst one in my class be it middle school or high school or be it my old hockey team. Yet I am where I am today.

Honestly, didn’t think I was gonna cry over watching a video like this today but holy crap. That’s all I have to say. I don’t even know why I’m crying right now.

This is a beautiful thing. I would love to believe that someone would just hit the sprinklers, but experience has taught me that they definitely won’t. I am a highly skilled and accomplished audiologist, well respected in my field with countless accolades, papers and innovations on my resume. I run the most successful and effective clinic within my group and by any meaningful metric, in my region of the country. I receive dozens of invitations a year to speak at significant summits and conventions as well as consultation engagements with major clinical and research groups, and yet, I spend my life frantically studying and training, not to be better or to provide higher quality outcomes for patients and partners, but because I am terrified that someone is going to figure out that I am a complete fraud. This video gave me a moment of peace, I know that it won’t last, but I thank you from the bottom of my heart for that moment, it was a jewel, small and rare and immeasurably valuable.

It will last, it might seem like it won’t, but pray to God for peace and things will all work out in his timing. You’ll figure out some things about yourself that may be surprising. 🙏🏾♥️

The approach is interesting. I think it all comes down to self-esteem, a lack of self-confidence, even with a career. Excellent soundtrack, congratulations Misha

Hard pill to swallow but sometimes, imposter syndrome could also mean that you have good judgement and you firmly realize that you can’t reach certain expectations with your ability and it’s just not possible to do so no matter what you do. Sometimes it’s better to call it quits in a marathon than to finish it and go into cardiac arrest. Knowing your limitations is very important.

Never knew what I was experiencing was called imposter syndrome. Putting out one face to the world when you know or feel like you dont belong. And waking up every morning dreading to go to work because you knew it was fake, it was not you. After 26 yrs of "suffering" with this feeling, I said NO MORE. I left my job and I refuse to be someone I am not. It took me a long time, sadly, but better late than never
