I don't even know how I came up with the term "Stank Trickery" but I started calling it stank trickery when I would manipulate bee colony populations by moving hive boxes or swapping positions. I started experimenting with this six or eight years ago as a way to strengthen weaker colonies without swapping frames around or doing anything else for them. It works pretty good most of the time as long as both colonies being swapped have good queens and an adequate food source. I have caused at least one good nuc hive to fail while trying to prop up a very weak one with this method so follow up inspections are critical if you're going to try this. I've also tried a few variations of this. One is where I would swap positions for half a day or a few hours and then move both boxes to a new yard which would stop the cross populating of those boxes. Stank trickery is nothing anyone really needs to know or will every use on a regular basis but I figured you might like to see some of my fun little experiments.
The hive removal we did in this video went about as expected with the exception that these bees were incredibly laid back. That's not so unusual but the last three colonies we removed from this apartment building were just plain mean. We actually had to suit up for one of them. This particular building had two more hives removed by someone else prior to us being contacted. As you can see the siding is in need of some repair and the bees are taking full advantage. One common thing we found with each hive we removed at this location was that there was quite a bit of expanding foam in each of the areas where there was a hive. Someone had tried to cut corners on repairs by just pumping as much expanding foam into holes and hive entrances as possible. In the end they cost themselves. We got paid for four hive removals and I know of two other removals they paid for someone else to do. They could have added vinyl siding to most of the house for what they've spent in foam and hive removals.
I gave the bees from this removal to a young man (11 years old) who is learning under the guidance of his mom who is, I think, a second year beekeeper.

Hey Randy! Try misting the area that you want to foam with water. Just like Gorilla Glue, most of the expanding foams are water activated. They DO NOT stick to dusty, dry surfaces well, but they DO STICK to moistened ones. Weird, I know. BUT that is how they work. Dust & dirt will keep your overhead spray foam from sticking.

You can light the smokers with that sanitizer (it's multi-purpose). I have to agree a cloud of bees makes a darned good standoff spacer. Started putting my hives together a couple days ago - got got a couple hives - double deep broods with cheap copy flows on top. Cool gingerbready roofs. Getting ready up here in NY for the bees. I know it'll be a while, but I'm going to try my hand at a little swarm trapping. At this rate they'll be my only visitors for a while.

About face filter masks :: once in my street in England I saw a man in front of his house spray-painting his car, and to keep the spray out of his lungs, he was wearing an absolute classical straight-from-a-crime-comic cloth mouth-and-nose gag, complete with the noises when he tried to talk through it. It is the only time that I have ever directly seen a man gagged. In the early 19th century around Runcorn in Cheshire in England, men working in factories making alkali by the Leblanc process had to work gagged for hours on end to keep caustic sodium carbonate dust out of their lungs.

I'm really ignorant so I'm sorry, but I have to ask a stupid question: You put old nasty moldy comb in for them to clean up. That doesn't make them sick?

Do the bees eat rock wool insulation ? What about steel wool ? I was taught to block rodents using steel wool & squirt foam.

They won't eat steel wool and we very rarely see rock wool used down here so I don't know about that one.

What's the point of that head netting if your still getting stung?? Why not put on the heavy duty protection instead?? I couldn't stand to continuously get stung by bees while trying to work with them 🤦‍♀️
