The book "Daito Ryu" that Stanley is showing is really excellent (without overplaying it) if you want to study the personality and style of the late Sokaku Takeda sensei. He was really some character! God must' ve broken the mold after he was created!

A very interesting documentary, it almost seems as if Daito and Aikido are so similar that it is problematic to actually distinguish between the two. As an Aikidoka I am fascinated to see what Daito has to offer and Kondo sensei is doing a fantastic job of promoting the art. The only problem seems to be to find a legitimate Daito Ryu outside of Japan affiliated with the Hombu dojo.

In the talk in the video above, Pranin Sensei acknowledges that the techniques of Daito Ryu have been significantly modified in the image of Aikido. Even when comparing the early photos as he mentions is not proof that the arts were identical. The moving form of the techniques could vary between the staged photographs. It is clear that O Sensei wanted to transform the art into a move flowing art that focussed more on leading the attacker, a direction that increased significantly after WWII. So saying they can't be distinguished is not supported by the very video you are referencing. Nor in general. They are not the same arts.

I watched a doco on daito ryu and they claim that aikido is the first 114 techniques of aiki-jujutsu and that the arts doesn't contradict each other in any way. It also stated that it takes 20 years to master daito ryu aiki-jujutsu.

In one of his wondering around Japan, Sokaku Takeda found the school of Aiki then he adjusted to his Hiiden mokurok but the rest he photographed about ( 2000 techniques). He made up his origin and got his business started. On other hand Morihei never got the secret for Sokaku so all his life he was searching. He pass out but never found completly truth. Anyhow ,big thanks for sharing this to world, Morihei! If you are really interesting in this ..please write message.

Yes Kodo Horikawa and Yukiyoshi Sagawa had a deeper understanding and realization of Aiki I think.

So does this mean (and the video) that Morihei was never awarded the menkyo kaiden in Daito-ryu ? I thought Morihei, Takuma Hisa (and I guess Takeda's son Tokimune) were the only persons to have ever received the Menkyo Kaiden from Sokaku. (English isn't my mothern language and it was quite hard for me to understand every detail of the video). By the way, thank you for your precisions, and great thanks to Stanley Pranin and AikidoJournal !

It seems there was a big loss when Stanley Pranin passed away. Did him and the Gracie's have a big exchange when interacting?

Great documentary. But i wouldnt use the word "impulsive" to describe Morihei. Impulsive people often take the wrong decision they later regret. What Morihei did was strongwilled and following his ambition, his dream, his passion. He didnt let social conventions hold him back to "grab the oportunity", wether in meeting with Sokaka (and totally ignoring his family and village), meeting with Onisaburo (while his father was on his deathbed...), etc.

Anyone knows about Stanley Pranins biography or history? Did he get beat up as a kid, was he abused, or was he the target of racism or anything? Or did he get introduced to Aikido and simply enjoyed it? Just curious.

Did Morihei Ueshiba have any Aiki skills prior to meeting Sokaku Takeda ?
@dauntul
@dauntul 7 жыл бұрын
No. Actually Ueshiba had the idea to change the name of the art from Daito-ryu Jujutsu to Daito-ryu Aiki Jujutsu. The concept of Aiki was an advanced concept in Daito-ryu curriculum.

Just curious, do you have any information on the founder of Hapkido, other than what the Koreans have available?

I had the same question after seeing this wonderful vlog...I remember reading that there is a connection between Daito-Ryu (but before Sokaku Takeda perhaps) and Hapkido, but that it's hard to trace as it's not well documented....it would be nice to know more!
@carlosluismendez7392
@carlosluismendez7392 3 жыл бұрын
@@lopezb It's say that Takeda sensei adopted a Korean kid and he teached him daito ryu and then later it became the founder of hapkido.

Thank you for you answering. And so, is the menkyo kaiden a so huge distinction, if while not having it Ueshiba sensei could spread his art so widely ? Does this award has a meaning - I mean, did Morihei really missed something ?

Makes you wonder if Ueshiba learned the highest levels of Daito-Ryu.

Ueshiba did not receive the full transmission with certification, _"menkyo kaiden"_ , only a _kyoju dairi_ . Ueshiba also did not receive the oral traditions and deeper-level techniques.

Actually, it's totally right that I didn't know (even consider) the fact that Morihiei would have been an "aggressive tiger". Maybe it will lighten me a bit to explain how a so peaceful man in is older could get along with Sokaku Takeda, which was I think named "the little demon of Aizu" and quite violent as well. And thank you for your answers.

Stanley Pranin was surely very well skilled, but we've never heard of the view of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. He did an article with them, but the Gracie's are experts and athletes. Sokaku Takeda I suspect would be just as skilled as Maeda. Which Jigoro Kano formed Judo, but the Gracie's know Jiu Jitsu which probably isnt taught. Maeda??? But Jigoro Kano evidently had respect and regard for Gichin Funakoshi. Where there's probably someone just as knowledgeable and skilled in karate as Gichin Funakoshi. An athlete??? Maybe not, if so, it's kept quiet. Where the principles of balance and such were surely known. Just like Gracie Jiu Jitsu will get watered down and there's probably some things they will keep to themselves. As Karate might have been able to deal with takedowns and throws, as well as being very skilled at staying on their feet. Shoot in, they may have already moved. Will the truth be known?
