Stan, I built a 250ft long timber retaining wall along my property line this summer ranging from 2 to 4ft tall. I used the .23pcf UC4B treated timbers and soaked every cut I made with the copper treatment stuff. Tiebacks every 8ft every other course, and full rows of deadmen 5ft behind, also every other course. 6" of 2A compacted as a base and 18" of 2B for drainage behind with french drains the whole way. 8oz geotextile between the 2B and soil. Bottom course and all deadmen staked every 4 ft with 1/2" x 30" rebar. All timbers held together with 8" timberlok screws. (Went through 1500 of'm.) 😄 Did it all myself. (I'm 33) Took me and my subcompact tractor with backhoe 3 months! It was several hundred timbers. I want to thank you for the good info you put out on your channel. I had watched everything you had on retaining walls (as well as doing tons of other research) and put a lot of your tips to use. Hopefully the wall holds up for a good long time. Matt from Pittsburgh

A reason I started following you was because right after high-school and collage summers I worked for the best landscaping co. In the area. I was on the wall building crew and I built dozens of these timber walls. They were all built like this one with deadman every few feet and few layers. It was in Ohio and we built them on the shores of Lake Erie to prevent lake erosion, we did Creek walls to prevent property erosion from an overflowing creek and some for landscaping. It's been 30 years. I wonder if any are still there. Soooo over engineered. I think we said a 40 year guarantee. Such great summers. I loved that job.

Great to see a well built timber wall, in my neck of the woods customers go for timber sleeper walls because the believe they are cheaper, this is only because they often aren’t built strong enough and you see them start to fail and lean over, a well built timber wall would cost just as much as a block wall, but never last as long

Stan, we could never get away with placing the clay for use with the grid. It would have to be CA-6 and truck out the soil. As far as the timbers go they would have lasted another 20 years if the contractor used drainage stone behind the wall, wet timbers = rot. A trick we use to reduce excavation is soil nails attached to the grid, you have to have an engineer that understands them but they go in fast and hold well if the soils are proper.

those tires are good on some areas of use but definitly not on all... was talking to engineers on the bauma expo in munich some time back and the skid steer is actually a licensed JCB in volvo colours and with their powerpack under the hood... the tires are the same tho as used on the other brands machine... and I have seen them on many other skid steers over here in Austria... they do work good on hard surface when used for cleaning up lose materials around trenches or when moving pallets of pavers on asphalt and so on... they even work on recycling yards when handling trash and glass but this is what they were designed for, not for use in compacted and hard grown ground... the problem is that there are a lot of people in the offices buying "airless runflat" tires as they "can't lose air" but at the same time suck at work in many other fields of use and a tracked loader will always have a better pushing power as well as less ground pressure on the area (even with higher machine weight) by the way... one machine that might have been good for you on that project the JCB 1CXT (a tracked skid steer with a backhoe on the rear end)

Any particular reason that your block delivery guy doesn't have a Moffet on his trailer to unload the materials for you? Surely the extra cost for that is less than having your guys and your machine time to unload the trailer for yourself.
@Dirtmonkey4 жыл бұрын
Not all the truck have them- I prefer they unload themselves whenever possible

Why is it none of your skid steers have 4 in 1 buckets, we in Australia wont have a skiddy without one, can do so much more with it
@Dirtmonkey4 жыл бұрын
I have a bucket- don't use it. Just not for us Minnesotans I guess.

Maybe it’s just me but wouldn’t have been more time conscious to unload the block and just move it directly up the drive to the site instead of on the street and then moving it a second time??
@Dirtmonkey4 жыл бұрын
That poor guy had already been waiting for hours. They wanted to get him going as fast as possible.

@@Dirtmonkey oh I gotcha, I worked at a lumber yard and got my ass chewed one time because I was moving lumber a second time just so I could get the trucker unloaded!

The problems you're getting with the Volvo are the exact problems I hear people talking about with the JCB skid loaders. Their concept is great but they aren't reliable machines.
@Dirtmonkey4 жыл бұрын
They are both made by JCB actually
@gillbujold19184 жыл бұрын
Had a JCB for a couple years at work. Hated it, would never start without a boost, cab never got warm, cab was just not comfortable... we have Kubota units now. It’s night and day.

Anyone know if there is a way to clean the white stains that seem to occur on Versa lok standard walls over time? I am sure is something in the soil, but I have seen a much older wall (over 15 years now) at a university near me in Central NY, and it is very stained, makes the wall aesthetics look terrible. I have a 6 to 8 course high versa lok wall and am seeing small white stains start where the wall weeps and allows moisture to pass through. Wall is only couple years old but I would like to keep it looking good
@Dirtmonkey4 жыл бұрын
I'd love for a versa-lok rep to answer that. Ive heard its leaching from the wet mix they use? but not sure.

How do you protect yourself in your contract from having to "eat" differing site conditions? Is this covered in your "rock" clause?
@Dirtmonkey4 жыл бұрын
We don't include soil corrections so that will be extra, but its the lost time that really hurts. We lose time while we come up with solutions -sometimes days while we figure out the best options available.

@nealamberg8074 жыл бұрын
There has been one question puzzling me. Because you always say that the tires that are on the Volvo are terrible for landscaping and off road. I know that over the summer when the Volvo was on the pool demo you guys were having the same issue. So why don't you replace the full rubber tires with air filled ones?
@Dirtmonkey4 жыл бұрын
We use the ASV and Cat for dirt jobs- the Volvo for demo.
