Joe Zuray and Samantha (Sam) Wright of Tanana fish in the Rampart Rapids in summer 40 miles upriver of their village. This video shows the scenery around tells a little history about the Rapids while Joe feeds their fishnet into the river while Sam backs the boat out into the fishing eddy at the start of a fishing opening just recently. Coming soon look for "Joe and Sam Check their Fish Net for King Salmon".
Joe and Sam have spent most of this summer at fish camp putting up canned and dried fish products for the winter for themselves and extended family. Along with myself they are the main people who run the fishing gear and boats so about a dozen households here have what they need to cut and supply their needs for winter. This goes on at camps all over the river from the mouth way into Canada. While greatly reduced because of changing times and pressure from commercial overfishing it is the most healthy family lifestyle activity on this part of the Yukon River today and is essential to the future health of the villages.
Best, Stan Zuray
