Norm Benning (yes the Eldora guy) is an owner driver NASCAR racer from my hometown of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. His main occupation is a commercial pilot, however behind his house in Level Green there is a garage with Craftsman Truck series trucks and SB2 engines in it! Norm shows us what he has in his house as well as takes us down the street to see his original race shop where he ran the SoBe ARCA car and once sold used cars. Norm Benning is the true definition of grit. What is life like for the underfunded owner driver NASCAR racer these days? Lets find out!

It's both sad and inspirational hearing norms story. He has spent a lifetime trying to compete with the best using the beats leftovers. This is the type of guy I'd love to see get a shot in 4 or 5 races in top equipment. When people compete in sub par equipment for years it makes them great drivers as they have to push harder than the next guy.

I have a photo of Norm taken in 2001 receiving emergency care in the garage area after a ARCA race at Memphis Motorsports Park. Norm finished the race and had just been pulled from his car suffering from what appeared to be heat exhaustion. Out of all the photos I took that day it was definitely one of the most impactful.

Mitchell, a Gary Balough interview would be a 10 part series ! You would have to cover his connections with Bruce Pee Wee Griffin, the ring leader of the smugglers , Billie Harvey and an earlier friend to the Allison’s and an almost member of the Alabama gang along with Gil Hearne . Gary also drove Pee Wees late models late in his career at New Smyrna and Orlando Speedworld . Gil Hearne would also be a tremendous interview , not sure if he’s still living though . Pee Wee died about 3-4 years ago . Although Gary might try and charge you for an interview, just Funning !

I’m 27 & run a welding business in central Florida, I grew up hearing story’s of Gary Balough & how talented he was at new Smyrna. I’ve been around all sorts of local racing legends such as Scott & Allen rose & of course Glenn Treadwell! I heard ol Gary would get on that nose candy & take a last place car & wheel it to the front every time he was nascar material! New Smyrna has a lot of race history & under dog stories, I still like to go there and see a good Saturday night race a few times a year!

As soon as I saw the photo I knew Harry was a Schipperke. The breed was created to guard barges and boats in Belgium and Holland. They’re some of the most loyal and dedicated dog breeds in existence. Imagine being a burglar getting ready to board a barge and you notice a growling sound right next to your head: you didn’t notice (because the breed are JET BLACK and almost invisible in the dark) the guard pup getting ready to rip your face off if you move one more inch towards the hold or quarters… Heaven help you if the dog doesn’t like you or you’re not supposed to be somewhere they’re guarding, but if you’re family they’re great dogs. Cheers Mitch and Logan, great material and thanks Norm for giving us the tour and stories! 🖖😎👍

Mitch & Logan, Another great in depth view and a personal story of a driver we have all seen, but never really KNEW... Norm shared some information that helped us all about the troubles of an underfunded driver and team. When he said I will never get rid of the truck on the lift or about the Dream truck that is in the museum, that was special. I never knew what happened to the drink company and the Honest man who told him keep on doing what you do. Race teams know, there are men that Do Not Have to Have a 30 page contract! The Pepsi connection and reason for not continuing was very interesting. Norm has some skills, being a private pilot and hustling people place to place, enables you to have direct contact with some great people. The Eldora truck is something that will forever be The truck for Him! Been around some Skipperke pups, black, energy burning, crazy little dogs. That dog breed was used on ships to control rat populations, so they are pretty tenacious if your a rat. Great video and thanks for sharing this presentation and all of your other videos. DragGone 😎👍!

Congratulations on the interview, thank you to Norm for his dedication to the sport, great story. I was smiling, laughing and in awe of his passion. What a guy. Now for the test answers: Re: messy garage…not often…I dust it, sweep, even my spray bottle nozzles and spray can straws aim 45 degrees left, with labels facing front. It is a sickness….but I persevere. Re: Gary Balough interview, heck yes! That’s might be a two part video. What an innovator, in racing certainly, but perhaps in other activities as well. Re: Norm’s S82 rebuild, certainly would enjoy it if practical…what is the end goal for the reincarnation? Thank you for what you both do.

Mitch, you and Logan just keep hitting it out of the park! What a great video! I hope it helps Norm get to Daytona in top notch equipment! If anyone deserves a top tier ride, it is him. He has done it the hard way forever and has had success doing it. Thanks again for a great interview and all the effort that you and Logan put into keeping the history of NASCAR alive! My condolences to you and your entire family on the passing of your grandmother.

Stapleton, THIS is THE video that I have been waiting for and HOPING you would do. I live about 20 minutes from Talledega and have ALWAYS pulled for Norm Benning since I met him way back in the 1999 or 2000.(2001 ? ) He has always treated us ( race fans ) with Dignity and Respect. When I first met him he talked to me for at least 5-10 minutes. Everybody seemed only interested in talking to the "Big Names". So I got to talk to him about how HE builds his own truck's AT HOME. And about his pit crew being his friends that as he put it " Sometimes they get paid with a steak dinner, and sometimes its just a burrito". I remember that when Norm was in the Eldora race and I was trying to pull his truck as he qualified for the main. Thank You for THIS video. 😎🇺🇸 Good Luck in the Future Norm. See you in Talledega.👍

I’m 63 and have been in racing (making a living from it since I was 20) so when you were talking about your grandma and what she said it hit me because I’ve lived my dream(and continue to do so) I have a small Fab shop at Sonoma Raceway! I encourage anyone to follow your dreams because dreams do come true! I have always supported what you guys are doing and will continue to do so!

Sorry about your grandma, loved your interview with Norm. Watched his dad and Norm himself race here in Tri State area. By the way a guy named Blackie Watt is a legend around W.Pa. He raced anything that would run fast I think. He won a qualifying race at Daytona in the 60's. Really enjoy your videos and being 84 years old so many of your videos bring back memories. I would have loved to have seen videos of racers in the 60's and 70's who sadly have passed away. Might you keep up the great job you've been doing..

Remember Blackie at motordrome. If I remember correctly he got hurt when a drive shaft broke and hit him in the leg? I was pretty young but I believe he drove a white car and he was from Indiana PA area?

Brother you do such a tremendous job. I am 48 and from Hueytown, Alabama . . . May have heard of it and couple ole boys that did a little racin called THE ALABAMA GANG. My grandfather was Bobby Allison employee and crew chief for 13 years through the 70's and a ARCA crew chief until early 90's. I know old school racing and it is so cool to see a guy exposing these unknown and underappreciated heros like Norm and Lake get some deserved attention. You are keeping the history of the "golden age" of NASCAR and the WINSTON CUP GRAND NATIONAL DIVISION alive and given the new fans a glimpse of how good it use to be. Thanks for all your hard work and dedication. I wish you blessings in all your future endeavors. Thanks again . . . #22 . . #51. . #1. . #28. . #F-97. . . Jason Wright

Man what a great video. I helped norm out for a couple of nights on his truck in 21 right before Watkins Glen. Unfortunately between my job at a dealership and the dirt team I belong to it was like juggling 3 full time jobs and I just couldn't do it anymore. I was driving all the way across the city during rush hour right after work, then didn't get home until 12-1am just to repeat it all again. I wish I would've stuck too it and not given up on it, but unfortunately that's all in the past. I still root for him everytime he gets on track though, and I can say that I have worked on an actual nascar truck, so that's pretty cool. Keep up the great videos guys!

I'm from the Pittsburgh area as well. I didn't realize that you were from there as well. My Dad raced in the late 60's, early 70's. I only have a couple of pictures from that time. Like you said, if you don't document it now, it will be lost as a memory. I grew up running around Motordrome Speedway and Lernersville when they were dirt tracks. Now they are just old memories. Thank you for the both of you do.
