I wish the Japanese would understand the incredible gift they gave kids like me allowing the American version. I wish they would understand the impact it had on me, to be a part of that world, to feel connect to those characters who eventually became like friends and family to me. I'm eternally grateful and have the up most respect to the to the incredibly creative Japanese men and women who gave us this amazing adventure. If I had a son, I'd most likely name him "Derek" for Derek Wildstar. With my Attention Deficit Disorder as a kid (I did not know at the time), it would have been impossible for me to pay attention to the Japanese version. The Japanese creators have my up most respect and if I had the $ Millions, I'd try to buy the rights for the American version and make the movie. The film would always be regarded “second” to the real Japanese Yamato version and promoted that way. Japanese would also be involved in connecting the American version to their culture along with many Japanese actors. There should be no argument people, pick the version you like and LOVE IT! There no reason for this to be some sort of contest! :) My vision for an American Version Star Blazers Motion Picture: - Film Begins with opening credit’s paying respects in great detail, explaining how the American Version came to life by the Japanese and their incredibly creative people. The opening pays tribute to the original Japanese “Yamato” version as the official version! - TOP PRIORITY: THE STORY! With an emphasis on keeping it “REAL”, believable with in the world that it is told! - The story told 97%+ true to the American version as originally told. - Special effect: Well done COOL, but Conservative (1980’s orig. Star Wares/Empire Sticks back like) - First Choice to Direct: Ridley Scott (Actually, I’d welcome Ang Lee in a heartbeat!) - Villains, Bad guy’s, human like that movie goers can relate to, Absolutely no bug like, reptile creatures! Studio Demand Deal Breakers! - Story Pace: "In the moment" told as the original, as long as it takes! NO Cramming in 1 year of story into 2 hours! - Absolutely NO ridiculous American hair raising one in a million dramatic escapes. - Actors: upcoming, mostly unknowns, true to the original characters, NEVER well know actors such as Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Jonny Deep regardless of studio's demands. Absolute deal breaker! I could go on and on... I’ve known decades, this film, IF made right, with the right people in place, would outperform Star Trek... easily... I know it. Mike R. Minneapolis, MN

Many arguments on the title 'Yamato or Argo' exist, although we can see 2199 Japanese subtitle '星めぐる方舟" (Odyssey of the Celestial Ark), which associate with Star blazers' story. That makes me to feel Japanese creators are open-minded rather than its fans. ;)

kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3-vfWWupMZjh6s This is a scene deleted from ep.2 of the American version. Not sure whether you've watched it. When I was a kid, I think I learned from the scene and later episodes such as battles against Domel(Lysis) and "God! May cry for Gamilon!!"(ep.24), that we must respect enemy even in wars otherwise we will have to hate each other and insulting your enemy is insulting your victory.

Fun fact: "Eskandar" is an Arabic name meaning "Protector; guardian." It has the same root as Alexander. Tachyon Wave Engine/Tachyon Cannon is actually not a bad translation of Hadohou. You have no idea how badly I want to make Star Blazers 2199 as an ABRIDGED SERIES of 2199; one of the running jokes I'll include is that they were going to call it the Yamato, but China, Russia, the United States and ESPECIALLY South Korea made VEHEMENT COMPLAINTS and so it's the Argo, a name that has absolutely no connotations of Imperial Japanese death camps.

I think all of you that are arguing over the names, Space Battleship Yamato / Star Blazers, Yamato /Argo Are pretty much nit picking! I was first introduced to this awesome series as Star Blazers. And the ship was the Argo. And the characters all had English names. That’s just the way it was in America! Get over it! I have no hate for Japan. We are friends now. All the war time hate was way before my time! At the time tho, I had no idea what the Yamato was! I get it now. I even have a copy of the new live action movie in English. And I like it too, even with its differences! If you don’t, oh well...you didn’t have a say in its production! Enjoy it, or shut up and move on... Either way, Yamato, or Argo...the series was the best thing we had back in the 70’s, in my opinion! I just don’t speak or even understand Japanese, having an English version is much better than reading subtitles! I just wish every new version that has been created, had an English translation! Even if it says Yamato, and all the names are Japanese names...that’s fine with me too, I just want to be able listen to it in English, and not be forced to read it in the subtitles! Best space series ever! I wish they would make more live action movies, and not destroy the ship!

Please do watch Space Battleship Yamato 2199, it is better than the original in every conceivable way (except in the story of Mamoru Kodai). It is a huge improvement over the original. Space Battleship Yamato is one of the strongest stories ever conceived by a human mind. It is equally powerful to Homer's or Sheakspear's works. Every aspect of mankind's drama is exceptionally represented in this series. As a dramatic series, it surpasses any other animated or live action series ever shown on tv.

I was ecstatic to discover this month that Funimation has gained the rights to Yamato 2199, leaving the grossly incompetent Voyager Entertainment behind. Now we have the original Japanese with English subtitles on Crunchyroll and an English dub on the Funimation site. The English dub is using the traditional Japanese names, rather than the Star Blazers ones, which is what most of us wanted.

The "biggest" fix they did with this version of Yamato, the number of pillars you see on bridge window is finally consistent (in the previous ones, it ranged from 5 to 7 as well as colors kept on changing from title to title)
@demoskunk9 жыл бұрын
Liesha Cichol It was more often 4 windows because it was easier to animate back then. Even my old 1/500 scale Yamato only had 4 and it bugged the crap out of me! In Farewell, the bridge is always drawn correctly with 5. One more reason I love that movie!

Now that's where you're wrong. It was the US licensee Voyager Entertainment's decision and not studio AIC/Xebec to use the StarBlazers brand name and the US localized ship name "Argo" for Yamato 2199. They only wanted to market the show to the old fans who watched Starblazers back in the late 70s and early 80s out of nostalgia which was retarded move. The Japanese BDs already had English subtitles with quality translations and Voyager was idiotic not to use it. Heck they even changed "Wave Motion" to "Tachyon Wave" which utter bullshit and sacrilegious to both Starblazers and Yamato fans. Voyager dropped the ball so hard with Yamato 2199 that they failed to release the last 2 volumes of the series and its been nearly 3 years since.
@superlive987 жыл бұрын
Voyager's English-dub of the original movies called the Wave-Motion Gun the "Undulation Gun" or "UG" for short.
@bumbayker7 жыл бұрын
Please get your facts straight. Voyager did not work on the English dub of the original Uchuu Senkan Yamato movies or with any anime. That credit goes to Griffin-Bacal Advertising and Claster TV who had the license of the original series back in the 70s and 80s. Voyager only has license to distribute Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 in the US and they've done such poor job marketing it. They fucked up so much that they halted orders of the last 2 BD volumes nearly 3 years ago and still haven't released them ever since.

Voyager Entertainment straight up FUCKING RUINED the stateside release for Yamato 2199. First off, they NEVER should have shoehorned in the Starblazers name. IMO its a mistake to call the ship "Argo" its the effing Yamato has always been the Yamato always will be the Yamato. I don't know if an English dub will be allowed. My understanding is that the Japanese were displeased with some of the changes made for the original ( "spring water" and such ) to the extent that they'd probably be distrusting of a new dub and flat-out refuse just putting the old English track on this.
@WyldstaarStudios9 жыл бұрын
cyril1917 English dubs of anime which change elements of the original Japanese content for western audiences are done all the time. That's not what's holding things up. Voyager Entertainment has already secured the distribution rights. Actually getting a dub recorded and synched requires a lot of money though, and Voyager is a tiny company with limited resources.
@cyril19179 жыл бұрын
Wyld staar Some less-than-literal translation is one thing. Cutting scenes or changing sake to "spring water" and the doctor's "remedies" and such is another matter. Voyager's financial state may be a factor, but the Japanese writers have long disliked how we made more drastic changes to make shows that were "just for kids".
@WyldstaarStudios9 жыл бұрын
cyril1917 I'm sure the Japanese do dislike the alterations made to things they worked hard on, but I don't know how relevant it is. If the production company can make money selling it abroad, they do it. They always have. As for the initial changes, the original English dub for Star Blazers was done by a different company. Voyager didn't buy the rights to Star Blazers until 1989. Voyager can't be held responsible for changes made in 1979.

***** Probably because it was just announced as getting an English dub? Will only have an English dub on BR I believe. DVD should be sub/dub. The real issue is that two episodes go for $80 a disc in Japan while they'll likely be $30-$50 and 4-5 episodes on BR in the US. Given that the two countries share the same region code they don't want to undercut themselves with reverse importing. Also someone likely still owns the Star Blazer copy rights and they have to be dealt with/gone through. That Fox News might make a story out of the name issue is really besides the point.

When adapting Space Battleship Yamato for US broadcast in the late 1970's as STAR BLAZERS, Claster Television westernized many elements (as had been done previously to shows like Mach GoGoGo / Speed Racer) while retaining a vague Asianess. Seeing that the Greek epic, The Argonautica was the obvious influence on the story premise, and given the fact the movie Jason And The Argonauts (1963) was often on TV in the 1970's, they renamed the ship after the legendary Greek "Argo". That was a very smart move on the part of Claster, because STAR BLAZERS was syndicated worldwide and the space battleship is still called The Argo in most countries where Latin or Greek served as the basis for their language.
@mistresspirotessa908510 жыл бұрын
Voyager will destroy the series if they do their own crappy translations and/or English dubbing. I have no intentions of buying anything Voyager does, the Japanese Blu-Ray versions have good subtitling already and they do not change anything. Argo (No idea why they decided on Greek mythology for the name) is crap. It needs to be Yamato and untouched as it should be, not changed because of foolish nostalgic and outdated grudges that no kid in today's world knows about.
