Worth mentioning, no hard feelings if we disagree on the speeds. I’m not closed off to the possibility of being wrong and it’s not a big deal to disagree about stuff. I’m sure there’s a middle ground between the both speed opinions. Here’s to hoping MM can be exciting for everyone 🤙

I dont want anymore top speed. All I ask is boost speeds to be closer to cruising speeds. I prefer the cursing speeds to go up closer to the boost speeds to leave more room for diversity among ship speeds. But either way would seem like an improvement. You slow down to almost half the speed when you stop boosting. I feel there should only be 100-150ms difference between cruise and boost. What do you think?

At first watching this video I thought the speed was fine, then I remembered I had youtube set to play at 2X speed. Set it to normal and god combat is slow. =(

I think Acceleration/deceleration and pitch/yaw needs some adjusting (lowered to match speed decrease), but perhaps that will come when we get more pieces of the whole, such as control surfaces and armor.

Master Modes, doesn't fix the issue that ships have at the actual root of the issue, its an arbitrary limitation that makes no sense. Speed is and isn't the issue. speed is a result of the super high g's attainable by every ship. it's not fully realistic in LIVE, and does make sense from a physics point of view, but he numbers reached are still wayy unrealistic, and result in stupid speeds, where only REALLY good single seater pilots can thrive. I have a post on spectrum, and a comment on the master modes feedback thread, that hopefully conveys this to CIG, before MM is added, and they start to lose players interest in the overall project's vision.

Great video that shows a lot of MM’s positives. All those little moments between shots are times you can coordinate with teammates, share orders etc. seems like a great speed for teamwork 123

Great commentary, I could feel in the fight even when I had to look away to cook. I also think a bonus to the slower speeds is that it is much easier for the viewer to see more of the nuance going on in the fight.

It's important to look at the speed like that, if we double the speed to 500-600 then we're looking at half the spectacle. We're going to be sliding around with team mates out of view

For the first time I think about where my team mates are in squad instead of where to trichord away if im in trouble. I think about my match ups and priorities Im more careful with my resources because consequences of bad choices are dire. I see some lobbies the lone wolf squad battle mentality gets clapped and the smarter deliberate pilots scoring multi kills and peeling for their team etc.

Hell yeah. Love some appropriate use of environment to turn a fight around. I had my first successful pvp fight with a redeemer because i was able to zoom between microtec mountains around ghost hollow. You could do way more of that with master modes speeds. 123!

Keep spitting that fire. Like the Jonathan Winters videos on flight movement, this video should be required watching as an example of how situational awareness is supposed to work. I keep hearing people talk about lack of skill expression, but the skill you expressed in this montage was, I think, what we all imagine ourselves being. The precise controls were great, but not everyone has the twitch reflexes for that for that. And that's fine. But, the ability to read a situation and make good choices is something we can all "git gud" at. Disengaging in the PU means finding yourself 20k away from a fight that is moving at 1,000 m/s with little ability to either catch up or be involved as something other than a "chaser". Disengaging in MM means finding yourself 3k from the fight with the ability to find your defensive furball, isolate displaced enemies, or escape if you're the isolated one. It's just so much more compelling. Oh, and 123.

There are lots of PvP pilots that call using the higher speed we have plus the speed accel exploit 'high skill'.

@@jonathaneskew9878 1v1 duel there really isn't much. As Vergil notes, safety is found behind your opponent. So if you can push through him and get into nav mode before he's back on you you have a chance. In a multi player scrum there are almost certainly going to be more options.

It's awesome to hear someone with your experience and skill level explaining what theyre doing and why theyre doing it in a fight in master modes. It's something that is helping my skill in the new flight model and its just nice to hear someone be positive about the coming changes. Fingers crossed that with feedback were able to get MM into a really great new flight model. 123 o7

123 great master modes videos. Keep 'em coming.. Video ideas: tips and tricks of survival perhaps for groups, solo, etc. Knowledge gets more people playing AC, I know, with running a business and family, I don't have near enough time to invest in flying to learn all those things without some kind of insight, others probably need it too.

On one hand, this is what SC needed - the use of terrain, situational awareness, tactics. The squadron battle between two teams will excel with lower speeds, I hate seeing that a squadron battle in Live never looks like a squadron battle, because pilots often get too far away from each other, so they fight separately. The use of "terrain" is great - it reminds me of tricks we see from main characters in Star Wars movies. Would like to see you try out heavy and medium fighters too, don't know if you did that, did not see the rest of the videos on your channel. 123

Slower speeds also seem to make heavier ships more of sitting ducks. Why do I never see a fighter ace playing in a Hornet or Vanguard? It's always the Gladius or Arrow. And then all the dicussion about balance comes from the perspective of light fighters. Trying to tune the "default" flight speed and feel around the light fighter seems to make all mediums and heavys too sluggish. And why in the world does medium fighters have the same amount of shield as a light fighter? And why in the world do racers have the same amount of shield as light fighters? EDIT: 123

I could easily see the Bucs Capacitor staying the same but its regen being lowered a far bit. Theyd have the boost and speed but if they kept abusing it theyd run the tank dry.

Hey man, thanks for the shoutout :) Still quite a few issues in Master Modes at the moment. I find that passive flying is still too dominant. The wiggle is annoying and it's also too easy/fast to come back recharged after NAV mode. Not bashing anybody by the way, I'm guilty of the same. Hopefully CIG will open the PTU for a long time for 3.23 so that they can iterate as many times a possible and find the right spot.

We were always going to get these reductions, correct me if I'm wrong but wasnt there a giant document put out describing the flight model going forward a few years back and the primary reason they increased all the speeds was in part due to Heavy/Medium fighters just clapping the crap out of light fighters.

Good overview. While the slower speeds seem less flashy than panic tricord spin jousting the fights feel more like a chess match. You have to be more deliberate and strategic and have the time to actually survey the fight and react and use the environment. Hopefully it helps hit registration and desync because I think that is another reason they wanted to slow things down.

Yeah could work, but I think CIG might be very very attached to the ranges. There's alot of easy ways to bring it under control, which is why I never cared to debate it on my videos. It's such an obvious outlier and there's so many ways to nerf it just seems like a obvious issue which will obviously get easily fixed

A Bucc is made of glass and was shown to be taken down in this video fairly easily & comments of the Bucc or Hornet being tanky with 3k shield dps yet we haven't seen the F8 and it's 20k+ is concerning. The concern of those looking at handling v speed v dps v shields is where will the F8 land since they have proven they don't want to detune it. If it gets the ability to boost away to regain shields or retains it's speed advantages "scaled down to MM boosted speeds using a similar scale to the other ships" it will unleash hell especially for those who decide to take advantage of ballistic count increases/shield penetration. 8 Gatlings with 4x their current count firing at the range + speeds that they do? Ouch for those in the wrong ship not keeping their head on a swivel. They will be splashing newer light fighter pilots before they knew what was happening or industrial ships trying to enter Nav mode, losing their already weak to ballistic shield safety blanket & not able to even return fire. "A lot of the guys angry about objections to master modes don't care at all about PvP they just want to survive. Some of the others are new'ish players who run in F8 packs just wanting to kill any ship they see for any reason. i doubt they will give it as much of a speed gap as the Bucc has butif you are worried about Mr Bucky...do think about another quite fast dps slinger which has 7x the shield hp and a ton more hull hp than the Bucc lol. I can see it's "balancing" turning out pretty rough for alot of those who think & praise MM for keeping them safe or giving them a more level playing field. Still will no doubt be a pain in the ass for skilled pilots like we saw here when several full ballistic f8s come to party & can take so much damage as well as receive.

This is probably the best space battle video I have seen come out for Star Citizen. It’s nice to see a video displaying the strengths of master modes instead of complaining how much it’s not like the old system.

I'm still in the process of learning (as we all are) as a newish player to PvP dogfighting. Could they play more with strafe accel on light fighters or make boost in all directions except backwards be equal to what is currently applied to higher boosting speeds forward? In my head it would allow maneuvers to be more impactful and getting around your targets to feel snappy. Your window of vulnerability would still be when you are out of boost though which i think is healthy. In games like league, the brawler class usually has decent mobility and if you blow all that mobility (boost) on your engage, then you are SOL if things go sour. This does a few things: 1) Makes for fun decision making and a bit more skill. 2) Creates more outplay potential which is fun to watch from a spectator perspective. 3)Gives me a way to incorporate 123 into my message. 123 Great to have YT content that's outside the MM "doom & gloom" echo chamber. The SQB lobbies have been so much fun. I feel like I'm fighting and playing a much more diverse group of players than I did in the old FM modes. Names I might only see in the PU, for example. MM makes it easier for people to jump into the action, even on these large-ish maps, but I wouldn't say that actual fights are any easier.

Interesting. Most chilled out fight I've seen in MM yet. Think you might be right about the speeds. Do like the tactical play I'm seeing here. And yeah, the use of terrain is interesting. Maybe just relative speeds between ships and weapon/shield stats need to be tweaked over time. Still not thrilled about the cartoonish mechanics such as mega boost, nav mode escapes, chaff and floating wrenches/ammo though.

The cartoonish aspects are specific to the Arena testing environment. They won’t be in the PU when MM hits in 3.23.

What if they just changed the SCM boost dynamic? You get to top SCM speed without boost, and get there quicker with boost. It’s acting like more of an afterburner now.

👍🏽I for one am glad the Devs have gotten around to start addressing the strategic and tactical facets of ship play (combat, navigation, roles) ie. rock-paper-scissors in addition to balancing. I realized there was a general confusion and frustration fomenting in the community for so long as ships have been able to leave their hangars I suppose. Because of the fact that CIG had not committed resources to addressing these issues comprehensively often citing the development of Sqd. 42, there have been a lot of confused ship buyers and pissed ship owners. For example large non-combatant role ships with S4 and S5 turreted weapons seem to cause excitement regarding the defensibility of the ship, however they are equipped with these weapons primarily to defend against torpedoes, missles and maybe fools (who get too close). The fire rates are slower but more potent and are more effective when torps and missles are closer and their trajectory stabilized to hone in for impact. So slower fire rate with faster projectile speeds due to larger capacitor or powder charge makes perfect sense. Based on CR's WWII dogfight references; the closer you get, the more lethal the fight, the further apart the less lethal especially if you are less powerful; classic David and Goliath, difficult but not totally impossible, accuracy and numbers can be enhancements. Thus fighters are primarily escorts, screens or scouts; defenders or attackers of the torp-boats, the bombers, the dropships and softer skinned/shielded vessels to include other fighters in furtherance of attack or defense they are precision instruments, requiring advanced ship handling skill, enhanced reflexes and superior mental dexterity. Other than bounty hunting and maybe racing, fighters are going to enable pilots to earn their UEC supporting other ship types or facilities (space stations etc.) Their will be an inherent inter-dependency, I am interested with how CIG will continue the development of ways to keep the fighter pilots and crews "entertained" while they are not engaging bogeys lol I mean, AC and the PODs are a great start, but PvP is the MVP experience for the Alpha pilots and crews! We shall see. Gunships serve as gun platforms or as you aptly put it, area denial beasts. A ship positioned in proximity to the effective range of gunship turrets is made a better defended and hence riskier target. The configuration of the gunship's loadout can also be tactical ie. the upper and lower turrets equipped with ballistics and the gunners assigned to targeting inbound torps/missles or targets within a pre-determined range (too close). Capital ships greatest threats are other Capitals however against numbers and with strategic execution tactical engagement even they can be hobbled, boarded or prosecuted. These speed modes, engineering gameplay, power manipulation, energy management etc. are what will give this game the depth and immersion only imagined before it, it will demand of everyone regardless of role, my hope at least; anyone can save the moment, be a hero; be that character a Pilot, a Gunner an Engineer or a swabee lol. I think this is also what CR and others at CIG have envisioned and are working hard to create besides, these ships cost too much money to serve as nothing more than targets. I could go on, but hey SC is in Alpha, who really knows what this box of chocolates will bring to us, I am appreciative that we are able to experience it's development not just follow it, we are able to have informed discussions about it and realistically influence it's development. Better than what we can say about so many real world processes these days. o7 Keep up the great work, see you in the verse!

It's not about the duells, which Avenger One just showed with actually not just slaughtering noobs in a Gladius squad vs bucc squad test battle. And with a bunch of buccs killing a hammerhead easily. Meanwhile this video as some guys literally wasting their time as they decides to be useless in a hammerhead, right? So it wasn't even a fair or coordinated fight from the start. I am sure Virgil can do make similar videos in any ship if he just does to a random match, without even feeling motivated.

One of the main issues with the current live flight model is how easy it is to disengage from a fight…this is not fixed in master modes, just pop chaff sit it it and engage nav mode. This needs tuning. Additionally they need to address the fighting in a goldfish bowl feeling in master modes, this for is is it’s biggest problem, I hope they can tune this out too and soften the edges, the boost mechanic needs tweaking for this to feel better.

Interesting point of view. I have no experience in PVP, I'm focused to progress in PU, and master modes for me spoil an immersion, feel arcady and weird, but maybe with some changes we acuire a decent solution for combat without loosing "simulation" vibe. Edit: 123

123 looks fun AF, I've been trying to get into MM: Squad Battle just to increase my skill level because 1. I suck 2. I know this is the new flight model next patch 3. It's FUN! Would be more fun if I could get better at it lol.

Yeah I noticed the more and more I played and understand the ship roles the more I started to enjoy. But other players will gun for you in a bucc lmaoooooooooo. But I love how dangerous ships like conni are and the HH where and how they kinda function as support ships during the fight. Also im glad to see you display a 2v1 now I know what to do in a hornet lol

123 Light fighter combat is fun, but it looks like Master Modes is taking strides to make it a component of space combat rather than the end all, be all. Once they can't just melt capital ships from outside gun range then things like 'Death of a Space Man' seem more feasible. The biggest problem before was you could get a pack of small fighters and pretty much roll anything around for a comparatively tiny credit/time investment compared to whatever you were shooting at.

Nice flying through the space station, making DCS Dad proud 123. Control at speed would be nice too. Being in the right piece of sky at the right time is so important in DCS, and it's hard in SC with all the sliding. Jets will slide in DCS. If a jet is sliding the pilot is either doing it wrong or doing it on purpose at slow speeds. I forget sometimes that space combat should be a different feel and meta to atmo combat in SC. In MM, if a Gladius is having issues dealing with a Bucc, it would probably drag it into the nearest heavy atmosphere. That is when flight control surfaces are in. That brings us to a bigger issue, there are so many things missing from SC flight combat (armor, ballistic penetration, etc) to have a really complete picture IMO. 🤷‍♂

Don't 5th gen fighters have vector thrusting that actually rewards "sliding"? I've seen Growler videos where they seem to almost skid into someone's six.

Honestly the hardest part for me is the disparity in scale to speed. Space is so big that going 250m/s feels bad, until the fights happen. Also the artificial slowing of speed from boost is annoying in space, be nice if it was a bit more gradually, allowing you to maintain a bit of the boost momentum. Right now it feels too forced. 123

You know I could be wrong, but I have a feeling those who are saying the speed is too slow haven't been playing any AC MM and have just been parroting their favourite youtuber. That being said I have no issue with a small increase, which may happen when the ships start to get individualized. But currently right now I don't have a problem going fast.

Yeah it's 100% that. Go to his channel, you can see people saying "you convinced me, what can I do?" and him replying "go tell CIG" instead of saying "go test it yourself and see how you feel about it". It can't be a coincidence that the day he dropped his podcast a shit load of posts appeared saying the exact same thing. Plenty of us enjoy MM but we aren't making videos and podcasts about it.

He was moving under his max SCM speed, so he has max finite control especially when decoupled so the IFCS isn't fighting you constantly.

Best tip is to be as disciplined as possible with boost - really put some time into actively thinking about when you use it. Only use it for micro corrections to change vector when you need it and save the rest to escape. If you stay within the SCM space the ship is infinitely easier to control than it is when you push up to the 300-500m/s speeds. You'll also start to feel like fights are much closer together. I used to think the MM stuff was shit because the fights all felt too far apart still. Then I realised it was just me over-using boost all the time. Coincidentally that's what led me to believe the SCM speeds were probably in the right place and don't need to go higher.

Good video. I think the listed pros aren't accurate given the nature of how disorganized the Squad Battles is without a structured team. If you had a few teammates with you, or if you were facing a structured team... would the listed pros still stand? Good battle reasoning though. Was a good watch.

My impression (I'm not a great pilot, I just want to be competent) is that it isn't strictly speaking just about speed. But more overall mobility, it is the combination of changes people get upset about. That's why you see A1 chatting about energy. People feel less agile and hate it. I get that, I'm not sold that medium fighters have a role. But that's what testing and feedback is about.

Why? It works well. You get all the shields you had when entering Nav the moment you drop back out to SCM (almost instantly too) so you can just choose to drop back to SCM if you want them back. Escaping with Nav is actually quite easy if you mask your escape with chaff and once you're at full speed nobody is gonna hit you because they have no weapons.

I'll put his name in the video description because I definitely want to be appreciative of it (I didn't know this one was his). But I'm also not of the opinion taking a photo of a video game makes you an intellectual property owner of it lol, especially when its just another result for googling "star citizen gladius". I also recall following him on twitter and I wanted to reach out to him about other screenshots but his DMs were closed. @@Ver9jl That will be a nice thing to do. More than copyrights and watermarks, it's about doing the right thing. I'm sure you both love Star Citizen equally and creating content within the same space, so just being a good citizens is what it is at the core. Irmdall does spend a lot of time on these screenshots however, because he post processes them in lightroom and photoshop. I think about 1-2 hours of work goes into them. So for me at least, they are not just screenshots, they are beautiful works of art. :)

I don’t wana be pigeonholed man, especially when this is premature because armor/shield types&variants/etc aren’t even fleshed out, this whole SCM/NAV mode thing with extra extended steps between them doesn’t feel right …also while I’m exploring in Nav mode I’m completely defenseless right? …hard pass, glad game is in Alpha and nothing is concrete. Just my opinions, but they are attempting to “fix” something that isn’t even fully working yet. The flight model is right on, the combat system is not, don’t fuck with one that breaks the other. Edit: still good to see these videos tho, we need them. Ty 🤙🏻

I feel like if its not broken, dont fix it. Ive spent about 6 hours trying master modes. Not being able to extend and pick how and when I reengage is a huge turnoff. I feel like Im stuck in a bubble or a piece of elastic is binding me and the other ship. Not a fan. If this is how we end up doing it in the PU I'm going to pass on most if not all PVP.

I have a counter-thought. I keep seeing the sentiment that MM is too arcade-like but i think its quite the opposite. The current flight model feels more arcade-like to me. The INSANE acceleration Gforces and speeds that the current FM have are a bit out of touch with "reality". The pacing that I see in this video feels a lot more close to modern combat sims. DCS, etc. Further balacing will be made but this is here to stay and it brings a whole new dynamic of combat and balancing.

hate to say it but the lower velocities will make it easier to engage, but that was never really the issue, it was the high acceleration and turn rates getting up into the 26g ranges that were the issue, and allowed for joisting. many over many years have suggested to CIG to drop the acceleration and turn rates to below 12g and only boost/afterburner allowed to gain higher acceleration in a straight line, making it that you want higher velocities you have to sacrifice agility and time to focus on getting higher acceleration and velocities. so anyone joisting could do it, but would end up wasting large amounts of time just turning around to repeat that tactic again. but the softer racers and interceptors could still do the hit-n-run (boom-n-zoom) tactics as they are meant to do that, and due to their design are soft targets if they get hit, so rely on their high acceleration and turn rates. this is where things should be, ship like the gladius, just above average acceleration and turn rates, with an good boost acceleration to make quick changes, but quick short bursts of power, not long ones, with an above average regen of boost power. it should never be anywhere are close to and M50 that's half is mass, and mounts same sized thrusters, but high performance racing versions. the counter is m50 soft target, high acceleration and turn rates, with light armament, Gladius is an above average target in HP, acceleration and turn rates, and boost, with heavier armament than the M50.

That's objectively false. High g's don't cause drifting, they literally counter drifting and provide linear authority. High velocities with a low relative acceleration cause drift. Simple physics. There is very little jousting in MM right now because they increased g's and lowered velocities. Proof is in the pudding.

@Super-id7bq there was never an issue with drifting or large vector slides when changing the direction of travel in true space sims. The sliding in coupled model is due to coding copying certain decoupled/Newtonian mechanics into an atmospheric flight model that coupled mode is meant to replicate. Having play many space sims and flight simulations the massive g-force acceleration SC uses is completely unrealistic and doesn't force players to decide whether to go high velocity or stay low, as they can do both in an very short time, it's more or less instant direct change of travel with no negative effects of being at high velocities or benefits of having tighter turns at lower Velocities as you can jump from one velocity to another. This is the point I was making. High g-force acceleration has been complained about since 2018, if not earlier. So saying high acceleration with lower top velocities means there's no difference between low or max velocity, as with 20+ g-force you can get to max velocities in a few seconds or less and back down in the same amount of time.

Not sure why you attribute slow speeds to master modes in the way you do, you can go slow without MM just fine, Ive dodged around asteroids etc for years, MM made no difference to that.

Sure but it wasn’t competitive, you had to arrest your momentum etc to make the turn because of the excessive drift. Using line of sight etc was just bypassed by distance. Evasion was speed and distance achieved with trichording. Now we don’t have those speeds so we’re forced to use terrain. Which is much better
