Hey guys! I just opened an alternate YT channel dedicated to real hardware OST rips of Sega Mega Drive/Genesis games. Feel free to subscribe and check it out periodically for new uploads! kzbin.info/door/na2PHvDo489p5pApBHLi1A

Great to hear our drum samples being used so well I love it!! people need to move as far away from that generic ultimate genesis soundfont for drums as possible lol
@HardDiskDog5 жыл бұрын
after trudging through eh genesis covers of this song this is by far my favorite
@MY5TCrimson11 жыл бұрын
If that Star Fox running on Genesis proof-of-concept demo progresses any further - then we definitely need to hear this in there! Amazing rendition~
@nub95624 жыл бұрын
pretty impressive for Genesis, love it.
@McQueen860111 жыл бұрын
Thanks again for your work. It would have taken me ages to choose the right samples without ripping them first. I don't use soundfonts, I always work with separated raw samples to have full freedom :)
@McQueen860111 жыл бұрын
Yep. I could have used a guitar sample to make it more SNES-like, but I preferred to keep it on the YM2612 side of things.
@normanroscher7545 Жыл бұрын
I guess that is, what a Sega 32X port would have sounded like. Great job!
@ATARI800XLfan11 жыл бұрын
so this is what the Genesis version would have sounded like, awesome.

The synthesized guitars sound like an old floppy drive. I think this should be played on the Floppotron! :-D

Sound fucking awsome and really close to snes. GJ
@richardlively14928 жыл бұрын
I know the snes had a better sound chip, but the mega drive just had better sound to it
@normanroscher75455 жыл бұрын
Yeah, just compare the SNES and Mega Drive / Genesis versions of Earthworm Jim! The bass and guitar sounds are much better, due to the FM synthesis approach instead of wavetable synthesis as used by Nintendo.
@edmaster933 жыл бұрын
You can't compare a guitar with a piano, both chips work different. As far as I know, MD sound chip creates the music according the commands while snes plays a sample (prerecord tune) able to play orchestral music rather than create them. MD Yamaha creates it's music while snes just play samples that may sound better but that doesn't mean is better than the other, both work independently.

Any die-hard Sega fans out there know where this song was inspired from. Afterburner final takeoff. Listen to afterburner first and then listen to this
@newtonkline53412 жыл бұрын
Soooo true. Final take off.
@normanroscher7545 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I noticed the similarity, but did not know that it actually inspired this. :-)
It probably won't get any better without expansion chips.

Great track, always loved genesis sound. Btw, always prefered the genesis :D

The thing about digitized samples used on a real Genesis is that the machine has far less audio RAM than the SNES because it's mainly used to hold the score of the music for the YM2612 synthesizer to interpret and generate. When a game included digitized samples, they usually had to be incredibly bit crushed and downsampled to fit within the Audio RAM. There are several exceptions however depending who the composer/sound programmer was, their skill level and familiarity with FM synthesis, and what kind of custom sound drivers they used. Generally, third-party western Genesis games sound like shit as those developers hated FM synth because it required far more effort and programming skill to do well than they we were willing to put forth. They bitched to SEGA of America about it so much that they had to commission an outside firm to develop a dedicated composing program for the system called GEMS which allowed them to sequence FM synth tracks like MIDI's. So typically a hell of a lot more of the Japanese-developed games, whose composers didn't need to use that horseshit, sound far more amazing and polished.

the sound ram didnt matter. if it did how was the neogeo able to do more with less of it?

Good! You should be a CPS2 version too.
@MemoriabitBr8 жыл бұрын
Sounds great. Of course I'm not sure the Genesis would do it in the same way for a matter of hardware limitation, you are just showing a version on Genesis samples, correct?
@McQueen86018 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's not 100% hardware accurate.
@McQueen860111 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I was thinking about making one using After Burner's instruments (since you know, this IS a knockoff of the After Burner theme).
@normanroscher75454 жыл бұрын
Right! I had never noticed by now, but it actually sounds very similar to SEGA's After Burner II soundtrack - especially in Stage 4! kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGbaloeuZc2Upck (starting at 3:20)

genesis chip would not sound like this; it doesn't do reverb and the orchestra hit sample is impossible for it
@McQueen860110 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't sound like this on the real hardware, but the YM2612 is capable of simulating reverb/delay effects by playing an instrument several times at different volume levels and/or with different channel panning.
@loganb717710 жыл бұрын
McQueen8601 didn't the Sega genesis have a sample channel? so they could use a orchestra hit recording for it.
