Wouldn't Wimmote for aiming with nunchuck for movement have provided an elegant solution for controls? I haven't played Starfox in ages so I could be wrong but it sounds like there should be more control options for this game.

I'm still not worried. Mostly because I'm one of the weirdos that actually found the motion controls that baffled so many in Splatoon to be second nature. Many of my friends simply couldn't play with motion controls, but I loved how fast and precise I could be once I hit my stride. I have the feeling this will be the same way. Welcome back Fox!

Everytime I hear someone saying it's difficult trying to focus on two screens, I can't help but feel they're playing it wrong. There is a camera change button you know, and using that effectively can make the experience so much easier. After discovering that, I never had to look down on the gamepad. So useful in those lock-on sections.

Agree completely. I honestly believe that it's people that are over complicating a very, very simple control scheme.

I'm loving the dual review. You guys have done it in a way where you can collectively do a single consistent review but allow both of you shine and to give your personal opinions/experiences with the game. Your reviews definitely stand-out. They are done by players, for players. And it really shows. Side note: I am anticipating an episode where Landon discusses why Monkeys don't like Dogs in Japan in his Lost in Translation series.

SAVAGE PIXEL!! Seeing how this was the first review I watched of yours for a game I never played yet was a new enjoyable experience. I like the dual commentary that provides more than one opinion for the games various features. You guys did a brilliant job of blending that in ( and far better than other reviewers I've seen attempt that formula ) and offering an opinion that may cater well to several viewers who come in with different opinions on motion controls and how they might take to them. I'm thinking I will be buying this game but I'm glad to know what I'll be getting myself into and only because you guys make that clear far better than any other reviewers I know.

Even with all the gripes you had I feel like I would get over them after the first or second play through as you did. It looks great and it's Star Fox, so I NEED it lol. I'll get used to the controls and end up falling in love with it. Again, nice review guys, hope to see multiple perspective reviews again soon!!

This is probably the best, fairest and well balanced review I've seen of the game thus far. I don't have a Wii U, and was considering getting one for this game. To me, the concept seems easier enough to grasp- Its a twin-stick shooter where the second stick is the whole controller. Of course I'd actually have to play it to see how it feels, but I'm optimistic about it.

I like motion controls as well, but I draw the line at Gyro controls. For me I like to shift around or need to move and that can mess me up bad while people who have shaky hands are fucked from the get go. Some of the smaller things like no wing damage and losing your laser upgrades for it sucks since it gives me no reason not to just run into something to try and kill it for points, the fact you can pick from any stage when they are unlocked kills my interested to replay since I don't need to improve for a set of stages, but just keep doing one until I get it right. The other main issue I have is this is another StarFox 1 game. Where 64 was a reteling then we got the remake of 64 on 3DS and now this we have 4 games telling the same story in 3 different ways instead of trying to be some what original and make a sequel to 64 that fills in some gaps up to Adventure or even make a game after Assault and ignore Command (Seriously that game can rot in hell for the bs of a story. Music was great and gameplay was meh) or hell even retell or reboot Adventure. Would have been more interesting then giving us the same old story again. Sorry if that seemed like a rant, but I need to get off my chest in a crowd who seems to at least understand one's own opinion unlike other reviews I have read and seen

I really enjoyed the duo commentary in this review. Hearing two completely different points of view really helps shine some light on this game. Its a little disappointing to hear the number one problem with this game is its control though. From a series that in the past had relatively simplistic control. Its disappointing to see the game give you major whip lash with its vehicles and their awkward to handle controls. Also on a creepy side note. Both of you have really great voices. You should do a podcast or something! I'd listen to it!

I completely agree with the thing about how barrel rolls were mapped in the gamepad. Also, how U-turns and Loops are triggered by pressing one stick up and the other one down (and viceversa). The following happened to me SEVERAL times though my experience with the game: I wanted to boost and ascend with my arwing at the same time and the game would interpret that as a loop. Honestly, whyyy? And as you said all of this could have been avoided by adding an option to customize the controls, but since that was a good idea it was obviously scrapped out... honestly Starfox Zero could have been a good game but it was the small details like these ones that make it just an average game imo. Good review btw.

love this review. it does a fair job and its nice to see the dual opinions because it offers both camps of playing this game; people that are just not going to have the patience to get used to these over complicated controls and those that are willing to give it time. i was in both camps lol. i hated the controls at first, but saw that this is a Star Fox game i've been waiting for a long time, so i continued playing til i mastered it. The problem is, it took TOO LONG to get used them. by the time it became second nature, i was almost done seeing all levels and alternate path. I hardly ever look down at the pad; i've gotten used to pressing the "-" button to switch screens. the only level i absolutely look down is the Floating Base stage since thats a bit quicker to do. But yeah. I still very much like the game. I just popped it in for a quick run a few minutes ago and had a good time. Just wish there was more levels, more to do.

Very thorough and enjoyable vid, guys. Good job! However, I feel this issue you bring up is incorrect: This game doesn't feature a mandatory 2-screen format as the game is perfectly playable on just using either the Gamepad or just the TV alone. It just makes use of 2 unique "viewpoints" easily interchangeable with the minus button if the player opts to only focus on one screen

Maybe I'm holding my breath here, but I genuinely want to believe in Nintendo. They have great, lasting IP's and a history that resonates in the gaming industry. Honestly, I can never picture this industry without their constant influence. It's a little discourage to see them so gun-ho over motion controls within this decade of gaming that they have to stuff that agenda in their games to justify them. I already have SG Zero myself and have played a good chunk of it so far. There is a great game to be had here; it's the entry level that's pretty demanding with these controls. I think this game would have been awesome if it didn't force using two screens on one player. More to the point, it's okay if something doesn't work. That simply means it's time to move forward into the next thing. My hope is that the Nintendo NX will present a brighter era of gaming for the company that stays true to it's fun roots and doesn't lose sight of TRUE innovation.

If i could offer some feedback for you guys, introduce the reviewers at the start. Say something like 'Hi I'm Bob..' 'and I'm Bob#2' or whatever. it just makes the idea of having two reviewers in one review much nicer. I'm simply recommending this because it took me a while to realize there were two people (Yeah it sounds stupid lol, but it happened to me). Then i re-watched the review and noticed the little name cards, but a lot of people don't really pay much attention to the intro of a video so a name card can be easy to miss. Just a thought. And by the way, great review; informative, clear and concise.

+Dark Pixel Gaming You guys introduced Star Fox 64 to me, so I couldn't help it ;) I like that you explain how the controls work like you're trying to do two things at once with the controls and two different views with both screens. And yet, I feel like I better understand how it works at the same time. Your review confirmed my impressions of it from the gameplay footage. It would be a polished, up to date Star Fox game that didn't really take it anywhere innovative. And watching the positive and negative reactions, it kind of explains why and how it gets in its own way. Thanks for taking the time to do this review right. I enjoyed it.

You don't need to see the gamepad for aiming with the motion controls, remember Obi Wan.... "Luke, trust your feelings" LOL. I only need to look at cockpit in a couple of boss fights, anywhere else you can just "aim from the hip".

I am not the kind of player who's always complaining about motion controls and whatnot; if I really like a game I'll learn to play it no matter how hard it might seem. Now having said that, I totally believe that like 70% of this game's problems would have been solved if the developers would have been humble enough to let players decide the control style they wanted to go with. Heck! I am sure many of the players who give this game so much shit for the forced motion controls would at least give em' a chance, try to experiment with them and some of them might end up liking them even more than the standard control scheme, if only the developers would have given them the power to decide. But maybe they thought to themselves: "Hey, we have spent so much time and money in this motion gimmick to make it work, so players will have to put up with it, whether they like it or not" which is a terrible strategy from both a development and business standpoint. I can play it and even enjoy it just the same, but I don't blame the people who decided to give it a pass.

For those who feel like you need to "mash the fire button for rapid attacks" you honestly don't have to. When you hold down the fire button, the game itself fires off around 6 shots before the the laser starts charging. You can fire off 18 shots with 3 presses of the fire button. you guys don't do a grade thing? like A B C D F, what grade would you give this game?
@ResonantArc
@ResonantArc 8 жыл бұрын
+babloo1666 No we don't. In our experience people focus way too much on the final score/grade, and make assumptions based on that, rather than listening to what we actually said. For example, I could be saying all along that I think the game is good, but then give it a B or an 8/10 and people will think I'm giving it a "bad" score. I would rather have people focus on what I'm saying rather than on a score.

Dark Pixel Gaming That's very nice. well in my opinion from your review and combined opinion, I felt a B- to a C grade for the game overall. Honestly, for me its the game's controls that are really giving me a headache now.

The biggest point i can make about this game is that when every review about it whether it be good or bad has to mention hating, liking, or tolerating the controls, "you fucked up". Clearly it acts as a huge hindrance to the enjoyment of this game. I have played this game for roughly 5 hours now and (while i do notice myself getting better) no session has lasted more then 1 hour because i just get so frustrated i have to take a break. I have been a huge fan of Star Fox since the SNES days so i try to grit through it, butt... At the end of the day i worry that without offering anything new in the way of expanding the Star Fox universe and instead playing to nostalgia; this game will just end up isolating more people rather then bring new ones in. That is not what i want, i want them to make a game that receives universal acclaim. There is so much potential in the Star Fox IP, but this game is not the one to realize that potential.

The voice actors were also in SF64 3D and Smash 4! Fox on the ground is cool, but remember the controls! I agree about 3D sound. Everything is cool except panning voices. Literally every game redoes music, but it's usually a remake or homage, never a 1:1 rip. See Assault on how to do it right. Have you been mashing R to shoot? One press gives a few shots, so just press periodically for an effective, semi-automatic rapid-fire. I agree that having two screens are the problem, and what separates it from, say Splatoon (which is bad comparison IMO), and a 3DS is even better since your screens would be anchored together, unmoving. Then you wouldn't need to recalibrate as often. Two screens aren't mandatory though. Pressing minus works to switch views, being especially helpful for Off-TV play. I love this game, though it's mainly because of Sector. Beta Phase 2. The emptiness of space filled with activity, teammates whizzing past you, laser shots firing around the background as if hundreds of ships in the fleet you're helping are _actually_ engaged in combat somewhere in the distance... This was the level where the thought finally entered my mind: This is straight out of a Star Wars movie! also, "Point for Bill!"

weird that Nintendo forces you to use such complicated controls for a game that doesn't that at all. they needed more time for the game, i get that. but why didn't they use the time to put a traditional SF control sheme in the game as well? or a simple VS mode for that matter.

Because the game was not built around the classic style. It was built around firing to your left without actually having to turn left and understanding where you're flying to mixed with judging the distance of your enemies.

I liked the review. I rented the game and just couldn't get through it. The forced motion controls for one were just too awkward, but even worse, the inability to customize the button mapping was inexcusable IMO. I just couldn't get used to the arwing pivoting using the right thumbstick. In addition, since I use headphones when I play games, not having an option to have character dialogue come through TV audio was a bummer.

great review.. it's a great game. It took 15min to master the controls for each vehicle for me, but everyone is different. Some people need to quit being lazy and crying about motion controls, master the damn controls for a great experience. And people think they are ready for VR, when they can't even deal with some basic Nintendo motion controls. Just wait for the real complex imersive VR that uses motion controls besides moving your head

This pretty much nails the problem with Star Fox Zero. It's a fantastic game... IF you can get used to the controls. I did, without too much trouble. I changed to the setting that makes motion controls only activate when firing, which for me pretty much made the game feel like Star Fox 64, and in turn meant that I didn't have to look at the game pad for the majority of Arwing portions of the game. But I understand why even that would present people with difficulties. The motion controls don't feel intuitive. They feel forced and shoehorned, to the point that for many people they will absolutely ruin what is otherwise an absolutely AMAZING addition to the series. Here's hoping for a motion-free Switch version.
@Level857

A motion free Star Fox would mean that Star Fox games will exclusively play using just the Arwing. You would not be able to pilot vehicles without the gyro to move the aiming reticule. A motionless Star Fox would be a step back. I will only buy a Star Fox that moves forward.

THIS GAME IS FUCKING AWESOME GUYS! IT'S A PARADIGM SHIFT IN GAMING CONTROLS! DON'T LISTEN TO THESE BAD GAMERS WHO DON'T HAVE THE SKILLS OR PATIENCE TO MASTER THE CONTROLS. THE CONTROLS ARE HARD AS SHIT, BUT TRUST ME, ONCE YOU MASTER THEM, YOU CAN DO THE MOST EPIC FUCKING MOVES EVER BECAUSE OF THESE CONTROLS (i.e. FLYING IN A FLAT "S" OR FORWARD SPIRAL PATTERN ALL WHILE KEEPING YOUR CROSSHAIRS ON THE TARGET). THIS SHOULD BE GAME OF THE YEAR ON INNOVATION ALONE BECAUSE THE REAL CHALLENGE AND PURPOSE OF THE GAME IS MASTERING THE CONTROLS (STAR FOX APPARENTLY IS REALLY FUCKING SKILLED!!! LOL). THE "REAL" BOSS IS NOT ANDROSS, IT'S THE CONTROL SCHEME. EVERY ENEMY IS EASY IF YOU MASTER THE CONTROLS; THE THING IS, MASTERING THE CONTROLS IS PROBABLY HARDER THAN ANY BOSS IN ANY GAME YOU"VE EVER PLAYED (IT"S A MIND TRIP). EACH VEHICLE CONTROLS DIFFERENTLY FOR GOOD REASONS WHICH GIVES YOU EVEN MORE TO MASTER. LISTEN, THE TRUE FUN IS KNOWING WHAT YOU WANT TO DO IN YOUR MIND AND SLOWLY BUT SURELY BEING ABLE TO DO IT IN THE GAME BECAUSE YOU ARE BECOMING A MASTER OF THE CONTROLS. NINTENDO HAS DONE IT AGAIN! !! THESE CONTROLS WILL BECOME STANDARD FOR EVERY FLYING AND MECH GAME GOING FORWARD (BECAUSE ANYTHING ELSE WOULD FEEL (AND ACTUALLY WOULD BE) VERY LIMITING NOW THAT STAR FOX ZERO HAS CRUSHED EVERYONE'S CONTROL SCHEME). THERE IS NO OTHER GAME LIKE THIS ON THE MARKET. NOT ONE. THIS GAME IS TRULY UNIQUE. THE MOST AMAZING THING IS THAT THIS GAME WAS ONLY POSSIBLE BECAUSE NINTENDO WAS DARING ENOUGH TO BE THE FIRST TO TRY THE DUAL SCREEN CONSOLE. ALL HAIL MIYAMOTO AND NINTENDO!!! THE TRUE GODS OF GAMING!!!

I thought Assault did a REALLY good job of giving new appeal to the StarFox series, it's well liked and was very successful. I was hoping for a new StarFox game that fleshes itself out more like Assault did. Zero was great though too

+Zelly64 Yeah, I think Assault gets a bummed wrap. Sure the game had problems, but it also had some really good elements to it. I feel that Star Fox Zero would have been better with a more unique and developed plot like Assault. I also feel having multi-player in Zero like Assaults should have been mandatory (though with more polish; perhaps making the multi-player more like Warhawk's). Overall, I do feel that Star Fox Zero should have taken more ideas for content from Assault.

Max Fightmaster Assault actually has a pretty decent following, despite still being heavily overshadowed by 64, it is still the next most popular game that is still talked about, praised and played. people almost seem to forget SNES existed, which I think is also underrated and overshadowed by 64. I really liked Zero, and I condemn their haters til the end of the day, but I still think it was a step back for the series which is very unhealthy.

From what I've seen of Zero thus far, it doesn't seem like it should be a full price game given the amount of content it actually has. If Nintendo dropped the price I think people would be more satisfied with the final product.

I remember a similar time when I first played Batyonetta 1 on the 360. Couldn't understand the praise lavished on it and even thought it to be a rubbish game. I soon realised after several several hours and playthroughs of the 360 demo that it was exceptionally good and I was a fool for thinking otherwise. It's normal to form an opinion and to think we are right but sometimes that opinion is formed from too little time to truly know if something is appealing. From my discovery that Bayonetta was indeed a very good game I made it a rule that I'd not be so hasty in my initial impressions of things. Starfox does look to be tricky regards to it's controls but then it does also look like these are overcome once you familiarise with them. For some that might be something they're not prepared to do but I personally hunger for more of the Starfox64 style no matter what the learning curve

+Paintamaster2000 I still think StarFox 2 and Assault are the best, but Zero is a step in the right direction, I want the series to advance and evolve so it can keep up with modern games, Assault has a better fan reception than Zero does, and it looks like it will have sold better too. remaking an N64 game and passing it off like a "nostalgic experience" was a bad idea that failed with 643D, If StarFox is able to recover I hope they just drop the whole nostalgic thing and move on.

I am a die hard SF fan. I beat adventures and assault back in the day. But I cannot get into the controls. I can feel there is a great game here. But at the same time I feel that even if I master the controls, it's never going to be a pick up and play type of game. I will have to prepare myself for the control experience and that's not something I want. I want to play the game, not fight the controller to be able to play the game. The most important part of a game is being able to play it. SFZ might as well have come with a banana and told me to play the game using the packaged fruit to aim. I find it unplayable and that's incredibly sad for me. There is so much here and the presentation of the game is amazing. But I am 10 hours in and I still hate these controls.

I own StarFox Command, but I haven't played it in ages. The one thing I remember well about it is that I wish Nintendo had made the campaign longer instead of making us go through it something like seven times. Because as things stand, I was happy just playing through it once and then ditching the game altogether. I don't own a Wii U either way, but as for Star Fox Zero, the fact that you guys say you got used to the controls *after* beating the game isn't exactly enticing to me. I'm all in favor of in-game trophies, but they shouldn't be a substitute for actual content. Also, frankly, the whole anthropomorphic animals deal just doesn't do anything for me. I guess I don't particularly care for what's "cute"...

Urgh, as soon as you guys mentioned motion controls I knew I'd be turned off from this game. I love Star Fox 64 (called Lylat Wars over here in the UK for some reason) and I'm playing the 3ds version too. But I don't understand Nintendo's obsession with changing . . . no, forcing the motion style of play on us. Perhaps it's just a particular mind set, but removing the simple option of traditional joypad play is a major detriment to me and many others. It's why I think they've been third place to Sony and Microsoft in recent years. Still, it's great to see Star Fox back and I hope people enjoy it.

I was introduced to Star Fox with Assault (not counting Smash Bros Melee) and I spent a great deal of my childhood replaying that game's single player and multiplayer over and over. I've since become a massive Star Fox fan and played them all to completion with the exception of the original. I have not played the game yet but my problem with Star Fox Zero from what I've seen so far stems from how desperate it is to be Star Fox 64. I'm saying this with as little bias as possible but Star Fox Assault and even Star Fox Adventures, while not perfect games, gave me a sense of progression in the Star Fox universe. Characters became a little more complex, you got to do missions on foot, new characters were introduced and some even died (kinda). I don't hate Star Fox 64, in fact I love it, but I had it's time. I don't want to keep playing the same game. Granted, a consistent structure of gameplay is fundamental for any franchise as this review reveals but it shouldn't come at the cost of it's evolution. I'm not saying make land missions half of the game again like in Assault (turning around sucked) but perhaps with improvement, it can become something fun and worthy of the Star Fox name. Hell, even walking around and talking like in Adventures has some potential regarding the quirky dialogue that the series is known for. I understand that Nintendo must've been afraid to try new waters with this series ever since Star Fox Command but the reception of this game, both good and bad, proves that there are still fans out there who want Star Fox to do good. To Dark Pixel, I wanna say that I do agree with a bunch of your points but I think the series needs more if its going to survive in the modern gaming world. and to Nintendo, if they ever see this comment, I say this: "Don't hesitate, when the time comes, just act."
