I was thinking about getting a Star 28/30/31 to complement my recent acquisition of a parts kit build Cetme C, both pioneers in their own right. *The Cetme is the first realization of the roller delayed blowback system into a standard issue weapon, a refined stg 45m. *The Star 28, being the 2nd if not first wondernine, outperformed the S&W and Ruger in the JSAAP (only failed because it couldn't cycle low-powered ammo. *It is a robust, well-fitted, utilitarian service pistol with some nice bonus features: adjustable rear sight, serration on slide and ladder cuts in front post to reduce glare, less than 0.1 inch single action trigger pull, one of the least obnoxious slide safeties for the time, full length inverted slide rail, and the easiest possible takedown. It's a shame it didn't get popular like some of its competitors, but they are often a steal at the $400-500 price range (not so much for STAR). Appreciate your thorough review of this piece!

I've had trouble getting mine to extract reliably...seems to only run a handful of rounds at a time before it fails to extract. Sometimes only 1 round at a time. Any ideas?

It could be as simple as it needs to be cleaned or weak type of ammo, extractor may be worn, extractor spring weak or cracked, incorrect recoil spring. These are a few places to start, but I recommend bringing it to a gunsmith for an inspection.

I have a nice one but double action doesn’t work. It gets some tension but then releases before hammer goes back. Single action seems fine. Any ideas?

Good question. I recommend you take it to your local gunsmith and have your parts inspected. This will give you a more accurate answer for your questions.

Cool. Star had some good pistols back then. Really like the full length rails. I noticed there is no firing pin block safety in the slide but with the manual slide safety recessing the firing pin I get why they didn't. Not a fan of mag disconnects. However I prefer the manual safety on the frame if it has to have one. Otherwise I will take a decocker on a DA/SA hammer pistol. Thanks for sharing.

Actually, the pistol itself has NO screws. The slotted screw like part on the magazine catch is not a screw but a catch that holds the mag assembly together under spring tension. Push in on the catch and turn the slotted piece about 90 degrees and the catch can be removed as a unit just like on a 1911 pistol. The rear sight actually does have a screw for windage adjustment. The only screw on the gun.
