Pixel art is hard to nail down sometimes, but I'd call this 32-bit-era style. 8-bit would be MegaMan 2 or Ninja Gaiden.

This game's half off and I'm super tempted but I just don't like rogue-lites. I feel most games that have those mechanics should offer them as a separate game mode for people that want to replay it. Otherwise, it just feels like they're trying to pad out the runtime of a short game and my backlog is way too fat for that lol.

Oh, that's cool - it's all the non-gameplay trappings of Into the Breach, punched up with an artstyle like Heart Machine makes with more horsepower. That sounds like it was designed for me personally.

Same, it was one of my most anticipated Indies of the year. I'm a little scared now that the reviews are coming out though. People are saying it's unfairly punishing and that it's too difficult. And as someone who had to drop Bloodborne because I couldn't "get good" despite enjoying the hell out of it, I'm a bit worried now

The story being all about you gaining more intelligence about what you're up against - in order to better prepare for it - is both literal in the sense that one currency that carries over is called currency, and in that your understanding of what each boss on each planet (along with the lieutenants and commanders) actually gives you a better shot at surviving a run. I lost one of my then five characters to a final boss on a planet purely because I didn't understand how it worked. The moment I figured it out, it only took the remaining four to handle the fight. Granted, it's not usually that easy after you figure out a fight's mechanics, but it's certainly a good example of it.

I absolutely love the art style but I couldn't be more tired of rogue lite games. It's tired and old, and a cop out for making a short game. Start making stuff that looks like this but gives me 20 hours of game time without the rogue-lite crap and I'm all in.

Yeah, it would make a good RPG for sure, but for that, you need a lot more work, and resources.

@@DoctorStrange01 And? You don't know how much time, work or resources has already gone into this? It's entirely possible to make a proper RPG without being a big studio like Square or Enix were when they made these sorts of games. It's done all the time, just that most people that do it have no skill to innovate on the engine, combat or art side of things so they use RPGMaker and create horribly derivative trash. This game however had all that sorted already, it just needed the imagination to give it all a story and a little meat to flesh out some of the characters. It was at the very least 60% of the way there. And more importantly than all that when the game was intially shown there was no indication it was not a full oldschool RPG. It certainly looked like one because it didn't look anything like the popular rogue-lites. That's why I am disappointed.

I wish this technology today could have been given to the masters of the past that made legendary rpgs. There's no reason we shouldn't have games better than chrono trigger or final fantasy 3, yet we don't have anything even close. This game is a nightmare come true.. Dead cells mixed with rpg is an abominable idea. Sure it hasn't been done before, and that's because the idea is just stupid. Biggest let down of the year. A beautiful box filled with mule shit.

I much prefer this, and in general roguelites/likes anyway because by far the majority of RPG’s have at least one or all of their constituents contaminated with crap. When it comes to RPG’s, the “story”, the music, the endless fucking dialogue, the repetitive grinding battles, the usually sub-par combat mechanics and so on, usually one or more of these is contaminated with absolute junk, ruining the whole experience. On the contrary, these roguelikes/lites have a very specific focus centred around the combat and gameplay mechanics. They only succeed if they actually are good....unlike RPG’s where most are junk and every looks back with rose tinted glasses to a time when there was no alternatives anyway. Long live roguelikes and roguelites.

I don’t think they’re ruined. As far as I’m aware, Games are often designed around being roguelikes. To have it in a different format would drastically change the game, potentially into something entirely different. There are also titles with vaguely similar combat systems that aren’t roguelikes such as Ruined King.

it looked interesting until I saw rogue-lite and card mechanics. I am so sick of both and developers need to stop making games with those mechanics. I don't care about pseudo random maps and enemies. The list of games that I want to play is super long and growing. So a game that encourages me to replay it over and over again to progress and beat it is just annoying as hell and I personally hate card mechanics in any game. I don't play video games to play cards. Windows 10 comes with solitaire and that all I will ever need.
