In the year 2387, the galaxy is threatened by an unusually volatile supernova. Ambassador Spock pilots a ship carrying "red matter", which will create an artificial black hole to consume the supernova. Before Spock completes his mission, the supernova destroys the planet Romulus. Captain Nero of the Romulan mining ship Narada attempts to exact revenge on Spock, whom he blames for the destruction of his homeworld and its inhabitants, including his wife and unborn child. Both ships, however, are pulled in to the black hole's event horizon and travel into the past.
The Narada arrives first, 154 years in the past. Its arrival is preceded by what looks like a lightning storm in space, which the Federation starship USS Kelvin investigates. Nero attacks the Kelvin, causing severe damage. Acting-Captain George Kirk orders an evacuation and stays behind to provide cover for the fleeing shuttlecraft, his pregnant wife among the passengers. George pilots the Kelvin into the Narada moments after his son James Tiberius Kirk is born. Spock arrives 25 years later, where he is captured by Nero and marooned on the planet Delta Vega so that he can witness the destruction of Vulcan, as retribution for Spock's failure to save Romulus.
Kirk grows up to be an intelligent, though reckless and cynical, young man. A young Spock grows up on Vulcan and is discriminated against because of his half-human heritage. To get Kirk to embrace his potential, Captain Christopher Pike challenges Kirk to emulate his father's heroism and convinces him to join Starfleet. En route to Starfleet Academy, Kirk befriends fellow cadet Leonard McCoy. In his third year at the Academy, Kirk is accused of cheating on the Kobayashi Maru test by its programmer, Commander Spock. At the resultant hearing, Starfleet receives a distress signal from Vulcan that indicates the appearance of a lightning storm in space, and with the primary fleet engaged in an operation, the cadets are mobilized to help crew the ships in orbit. McCoy smuggles the grounded Kirk aboard the USS Enterprise as a patient under his care.
Kirk recognizes the similarities between the Vulcan incident and the encounter that destroyed the Kelvin, and warns Pike that the fleet is heading into a trap. The Enterprise arrives late to find the fleet destroyed and the Narada drilling into Vulcan's core. Nero orders Pike to surrender himself via shuttlecraft. Pike obeys, promoting Spock to captain and Kirk to first officer. En route to the Narada, Kirk, Hikaru Sulu, and Chief Engineer Olson perform an orbital skydive onto the drilling platform to destroy it; Olson is killed, but Kirk and Sulu stop the drill. However, it has drilled deep enough for Nero to launch red matter into the planet's core, imploding the planet into a black hole. Spock rescues some of the planet's elders, including his father, but his mother dies along with the majority of the planet's population. Nero sets course for Earth and tortures Pike for the command codes to its perimeter defenses.
After a heated argument with Spock about their next move, Kirk is marooned on Delta Vega for mutiny. Spock orders the ship to rendezvous with the rest of the fleet. On Delta Vega, Kirk encounters Ambassador Spock, who relays the future's events through a mind meld and insists that Kirk must become captain of the Enterprise. The two travel to a nearby Starfleet outpost where they meet Montgomery Scott. The elder Spock beams Kirk and Scott aboard the Enterprise. Once aboard, Kirk deliberately enrages Spock to force him to acknowledge that he is emotionally compromised, thereby forfeiting command which then passes to Kirk.

I think this might have been the best ST movie, even better than (og) Wrath of Khan. It was new and exciting and very retro, and Abrams took advantage of the ST universe like very few other ST storytellers have. The villain and end plot are a bit weak, but that is okay here because the main plot is simply Star Trek, and it works well. You only get one free movie like that in a series unfortunately.

That's something that always baffled me about Star Trek; the seeming complete and utter lack of a military presence in their own space. In "Into Darkness", the Vengeance and Enterprise end up near the Moon and have their hours-long standoff after repeated weapons fire, and not a single ship was sent to investigate, meaning there was literally zero detection/response methods. Does that not mean that literally any military vessel could warp right on top of Earth and bombard it from orbit? There's so much discussion of tension and possibilities of war, but there's literally zero military presence around the capital planet of Star Fleet in a universe where warp travel means an enemy force could drop in from almost anywhere in minutes. I actually understand why Marcus believes they need to be more prepared for war. Two ships plummeted from the moon and almost on top of Star Fleet HQ with literally 0 options presented to stop it from happening or investigate the matter in the estimated half hour or so it took from when they first dropped out of warp. That'd be like today if someone hijacked an airplane in New Jersey and managed to crash it into the Pentagon, with the only warning being when people *see the plane approaching*. In reality, that plane would be contacted within 60 seconds of being hijacked, with military fighters scrambled within 3-5 minutes while anti-air defences lock on to it. Once the plane is deemed either hostile or nonresponsive, it'll get blown out of the sky way way WAYYY before reaching the Pentagon. That sort of an underprepared military just wouldn't be feasible.

Countries don't fuck around when it comes to large unresponsive/hijacked aircraft anymore; they know it's better to blow it out of the sky and have debris rain down than it is to have them crash into their target. If someone took a plane hostage and demanded ransom, the first thing they'd do is ask them to put the plane over water or a large, uninhabited area, to make sure that if they either shoot it down or the hostage taker decides to crash it, the resultant crash only kills the passengers.

If this ship was from the prime universe and had Romulan weapons of the time period, their disruptors would be beam and not pulse (same with the Starfleet phasers too, also those phasers wouldn't just have "stun/kill" as their settings but also disintegrate).

i like how there are zero planetary defenses on earth and zero planetary defense on vulcan. every other ship just happened to be out of range. people scramble out of starfleet headquarters at stare at the giant beam drilling into earth instead of maybe going to battle stations? this mining ship is armed to the teeth and moves like the death star. was it ever cloaked during this movie? being from the future couldn't have been that much of an advantage, could it? like maybe a few hundred years, sure, but less than a century, IDK man.

Nero tortured Pike for information needed to disable Earth's defenses, also it makes sense that The Narada wouldn't have any cloaking technology, seeing how it is not a military/exlporing vessel, but a mining ship that wouldn't really be needing that type of technology to begin with. Now Into Darkness on the other hand...that movie had no explanation for why no one would come to the Enterprise's aid, though I suppose Marcus could have the surveillance working for him or something.

What annoys me about this movie isn't the story or timelines etc...it's the writing. Like when Kirk made Spock step down as acting captain he told the crew that Spock had "resigned his commission" which would mean Spock had resigned from Starfleet...or in this scene when Spock asks the computer about its manufacturing origin and it said "Stardate 2387" That's not a stardate at all it's a year.

Yes, laziness or bad writing or thinking they had to write differently for the movie audience as opposed to tv... 2387 would be about the correct year, though. The idea was that the 24th Century events that led to the destruction of Romulus and to Nero & old Spock falling through time came several years after the 2363-to-late 2370s events of TNG, DS9, VOY, & four movies. If Season 1 TNG was year 2363 and stardates 41xxx, then year 2387 would be stardates 65xxx.
