This is how he used to be for much of his career. Only in the last 15-20 years or so, he really took a comedic turn.

This is quality entertainment, genuine,funny and feels natural,not like today,everything feels setup,like so fake and if it doesn't get the reaction they want,just throw is some false laughs.Television today is so bad I gave away my TV,it made me angry just listening watching the dribble that being shoved into my face.Maybe I will get a TV again some day and just watch re-runs of old shows that were good.

Two of my departed grandmother's favorite celebs were (1st) Elvis Presley and (2nd) William Shatner - but mainly Shatner's TJ Hooker series. She loved Star Trek but TJ Hooker was her man! You just didnt talk smack about Elvis or Shatner to her face - lol. She would have throw poor George Takei to the floor with a killer headlock for dissin Shatner. :-D

Interesting clip if for no other reason than Shatner on Carson was very rare as stated - you can see Shatner's humour (like it or not) coming through. Wow just as TJ Hooker was starting, talk about a flashback. Glad he lost the hair (and those clothes), too bad his face exploded :)
