It must be a RetCon. Information I saw from star trek magazine(?) - with all the Paramount logos - put the cruiser configuration as 137 m/450 ft (so I accept 139 m) having a crew of 36 and the scout configuration is 91 m/300 ft having a crew of 12. The "Bounty" BOP in Star Trek III and IV had to be a scout, otherwise every US spy agency would have been in Golden Gate park trying to figure out the hidden solid object in the park that everyone found given how busy GG park is.

The Klingons used the B'Rel as a basis for other BoP designs including the short-lived K'Vort Class BoP Cruiser variant (640 m). Size differences abounded between the classes and sub-classes.

@@danielhaire6677 I have a better explanation... lazy writting and/or a lack of time given to model makers. Every time we see a K'vort it really should have been a Vor'cha. Upscaling a ship/aircraft and keeping proportions of each component precisely the same just doesn't make any sense... unless a K'vort is firing equally upsized torpedoes from its now massively oversized torpedolauncher... Personally I don't aknowlege the K'vort as existing... It's just a stand in pretending to be something else that for whatever reason they aren't able to show.

One thing I had always wondered about is the Bird of Prey captained by Klaa in Star Trek 5:The Final Frontier was the same class as that Bird of Prey controlled by the Duras Sisters the Enterprise D encountered in Star Trek Generations and the reason I ask that is because both ships had the same scope that Klaa and Lursa or was it B'Etor that sat in the chair and started shooting at the Enterprise after they got the ships shield frequencies.

I just wanted to take a moment to say that I like this narrator. :) Don't get me wrong, I love Daniel's voice, too. While Daniel has what can be described as a bit more than slightly urgent tone, as if someone were declaring a red alert along with its associated pertinent information over a PA system (without being overtly annoying, I might quickly add!) along with a hint/dash of excitement/passion for the material being discussed, this gentleman has a more laid back almost scholarly tone that is quite soothing to listen to and which helps lull your mind into a state suitable for absorbing large amounts of disparate information. It's a nice contrast and by having more than one narrator it helps to constantly refresh the feel of the show so that your mind doesn't become numbed by hearing the same voice over and over again. Again, not that having Daniel doing the narration for so long was a bad thing! It's just great addition. Keep up the _stellar_ work, Spacedock crew! :)

Don't forget that Prototype Klingon Bird of Prey from Star Trek 6:The Undiscovered Country that ship was built to be able to fire it's weapons while cloaked and that was proven when it opened fire on the K'Tinga class Battle Cruiser Quonos 1 with the Klingon High Chancellor Gorkon on board,it severely damaged the Constitution Refit Class U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A and damaged the U.S.S. I've always found Klingon tactics to be a little at odds with their culture... cloaking devices and hit-and-run tactics are hardly "honorable" and all that, but they do allow the Klingons to leverage their (supposedly) highly skilled infantry in boarding parties while minimizing they time they potentially spend in ship-to-ship combat. As I also understand it (and I could be wrong, I'm no expert) a lot of the empire was built on raiding nearby systems, which would require such tactics to evade local defense fleets... so, maybe.
@Surtwo

There is nothing more honorable in battle than victory. As mentioned in your comment, those tactics would have been necessary in early klingon history, and I can easily see how those tactics which won them so many early battles would come to be seen as tacitly honorable by later generations.

The K'Vort ain't that big :) Ignore most of the specs from the DS9 TM; its authors freely admit it was a rushed job. Moreover, I don't know what you mean by "featherlike decals." Take a hard look at the studio mini. Those are flat-out panels, with recessed areas between them (probably light armor plating). I imagine the red pattern on the ventral wings were painted on since decals are flimsy and easily torn even after sealant coats.

It's the cloak that makes it dangerous. Without it, it's no more imposing than any other small patrol craft. Even a Miranda out guns it. And a Defiant can absorb more punishment. I think that crutch is holding Klingons back from building more advanced ships. The only thing really keeping the Federation from waltzing over their border and clobbering them in their next battle is the Federations generally pacifist policies.
@BlueBoxRevan

I wish I had a few of these things. The landing on, and launching from a planet's surface, is a key advantage, for all versions of, BIRD OF PREY, ships. -The cloaking systems are pretty useful too. LoL Of course I, would add many extras -independently powered; primary and secondary shielding systems, multiple cloaking systems, and (obviously)-overpowered weapons -(including an additional collection of phazer grids: on the usual parts one would expect them to be -top-&-bottom of the command section, on the wings -(top-&-bottom), and on it's rear -(again, top-&-botton with a clear shot at anything anywhere behind it) -PLUS...the most advanced medical systems equipped medical stations Federation STARFLEET TECH can, "generously donate"). Just as important, would be equally enhanced personal quarters, and... recreational facilities/training equipment -(A.K.A.=an advanced holodeck ..or two).

If you had to build up a fleet of purpose built spaceships; i.e.: Gunships, Corvettes, Frigates, Destroyers, Cruisers, Battleships, Carriers, other specialty classes. But you were not allowed to use any pre-designed ships from any property: what would each ship be, what would there role be in the fleet, how what would the ratio of each class be? Also, first.

A2RGaming. That depends alot on mechanics of the setting. Do we have FTL? How does it work? How big/ small are the subsystems of ship construction (i.e. weapons, sensors, power plants, drive units, life support, communications, etc.)? How powerful are those subsystems? What kind of artificial gravity is being used? Are we using actual vector manuevering? A lot goes into designing ships. Just asking to do it from scratch with no idea about anything else "in universe" makes it a mute point.

@Chris Shilts Permanent lunar colony, Mars outpost/early Mars colony, space elevator under construction/finished. Factions would more than likely include, but not limited to the following: NATO, pacific-based NATO equivalent, EU (if they last that long), BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China (DRC), South Africa), Latin America, and non-Aligned. The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty of 1964 has been modified or revoked (prevents nuclear, biological, chemical weapons in space, or the testing of such things, whether for military or civilian use), so you can now use nuclear engines. Early use of the space navy will be used defensively to prevent piracy and maintain trade routes. If you wish for this hypothetical situation to go on for a few decades or centuries, then you can add more systems into the equation.
@davidtherwhanger6795
@davidtherwhanger6795 5 жыл бұрын
@@a2rgaming863 In this situation I see long mission duration cruisers with thermo nuclear warhead missiles and probably small conventional warhead missiles for point defense. This will be very similar to sub warfare in my opinion. Most factions will only have two or three ships operational. Some won't have any. Latin America and non-Aligned will most likely fall into this catagory. EU and NATO overlap quite a bit, so they would fall apart early on as the US won't want to pay for the EU's expansion. Of them UK, France, and Germany would probably have a vessel each and operate independantly. BRICS would break apart for sure as Russia would want the dominant military position, muscle out Brazil's growing industrial base to prevent Brazil overshadowing them, and restrict India's colonization elsewhere as with India's population, they would quickly come to dominate any colonization effort. Russia would try to hold them together under Russian control, but eventually demands made by Brazil and India would force Russia to exclude them and they would leave BRICS. I see Russia have 2 vessels. India and Brazil together might get 1 vessel. The US would have two vessels.
@Riceball01
@Riceball01 5 жыл бұрын
@@davidtherwhanger6795 To be effective, you'd need at least 2 -3 of any ship in order to have at least one operational and on patrol at all times, this is why the US has 13 carriers. At any given time you'lll have 1 ship at port undergoing routing maintenance and their crew getting R&R and/or undergoing additional training. You'll then have another ship at port getting ready to go out on patrol, fueling up, being rearmed, bringing supplies aboard, etc. Then, lastly, you'll have 1 ship actually out there on patrol doing its job. Having only a single ship means that your ship will only spend about half of its time out on patrol and the other hallf at port with no one else to take its place. Two ships would allow for one out on patrol at all times but at the cost of greater stress on both ship and crew sine it would allow for less down time betwen patrols and maintenance would need to be done at a quicker pace.

Can you guys do the Prometheus type Battlestar, from the (non-canon) Battlestar Galactica Moore extension series. In particular, I'd like to know what the Prometheus class Battlestar Galactica would have been like, since it was meant to replace the Jupiter Class Battlestar Galactica that was retiring, and had been in construction during the first episode (the mini-series pilot) of Battlestar Galactica. I'd like to know, specifically, what life on the ship would be like, how it would function with its more advanced systems (compared to the Jupiter class), if it would have held a true claim to the title of Galactica after the Jupiter class from the first war, and finally, if the civilian fleet that escapes the Colonial Colanies (during the second Cylon War) would have fared better if they were escorted by the Prometheus class Battlestar Galactica, instead of the Jupiter class Battlestar Galactica? I would also like to know your thoughts, on whether or not the newer, sleeker, more technologically advanced Prometheus type Battlestar, would be a better setting for the coming Battlestar Galactica Reboot, then if it was again set on a Ageing, to be retired, vessel?

You know it's funny that the Klingon Bird of Prey stolen by Admiral Kirk and his crew was ironically the I.K.S. B'REL the first ship of the B'REL class Bird of Prey which in some ways it would explain why the Klingons wanted Kirk in Star Trek 4 as he stole the first ship of this class.

The unanswered question about its design is *warp nacelles.* It doesn't appear to have any on pylons and the large engine outlet on the back is too big for just a impulse drive. Could it be that Birds of Prey have a single warp nacelle, mounted internally with the back exposed? While not having the redundancy of two nacelles it does protect the drive from being targeted as easily, and apparently doesn't affect maneuverability. But how do they shield against it. According to some lore, warp nacelles have to be away from the ship because of dangerous radiation, and also need a uninterrupted line of sight between them to form the field. Although various _shuttle designs and the Defiant_ contradict this layout. And if this layout is effective, why don't most (at least smaller) ships have a single internal nacelle to remove that vulnerability. Or does the *B'rel* use some _other form of warp propulsion?_ There are other factions that either don't use nacelles but have some sort of engine port, like the *Ferengi Marauder,* Hirogen ships, and the biggy, that has a completely internal warp drive with no visible outlet - *Siliban cell ships.* Is there some advantage to having nacelles over other warp drive systems or should Archer have hightailed it back to Earth and Starfleet engineering as soon as they captured a Siliban cell ship early on for them to reverse engineer it, instead of just letting Trip try and figure it out in his spare time till it was lost. Well since they would have gotten cloaking tech retrofitted by approximately the end of series one…yes. [Part of a new series spin off series … *STAR TREK: PRAGMATIC* ]

@@chrissonofpear1384 Interesting, something that should be mentioned in any technical breakdown of the ship perhaps? And what are the advantages and disadvantages of that system vs traditional nacelles (which the big Klingon cruisers ect still use). But I stand by my views on *STAR TREK: PRAGMATIC*

Its stated in some sources (can't remember where, sorry) that nacelles aren't required to make warp fields. But they do allow for optimization of those warp fields. So without externally mounted nacelles, the efficiency of the warp drive is affected. The Defiant class has a significantly less efficient warp drive compared to a Galaxy class, for example, due to the design and placement of the nacelles. Basically it has to expend more dilithium to achieve the same speeds. The trade off is that the nacelles (or equivalent) are much less vulnerable to enemy attacks. So basically they don't work as well but aren't as easy to take out, an acceptable trade off for a warship.
@milamberarial
@milamberarial 5 жыл бұрын
The idea that they NEEDED an uninterrupted line of sight between the nacelles was contradicted before it was even written down, which is why it wasn't repeated much. Very few ships in the original series had visible nacelles, and the ones that did were almost entirely Starfleet. Basically, the external nacelles are a visual design of Starfleet, that people writing supplementary material tried to justify much later.

The Klingons sold old Birds of Prey on the open market with *cloaks intact* but weapons removed, which could of course be bought separately from arms merchants. Some Ferengi got a few and reequipped them with disruptors and used them to surprise the Enterprise in the TNG episode "Rascals" [yes, that one when Ro Laren, Captain Picard, Keiko, and Guinan get turned into children]. Now that opens up a lot of possibilities [no not the Enterprise discovered how to reverse aging] for various parties getting their hands on one. Imagine the fun the Marquis could have got up to with one if they equipped it with original weaponry. The Klingon Cardassian war could have started before the wormhole was even discovered. A minor backward alien species could buy a few and copy the design or just some of the tech and get a big boost in capabilities. And buyers aren't limited by the original design, phasers could be fitted. And imagine if the stealth coating from the _'Fortune'_ from the TNG two parter Gambit was applied… But from a story telling experience the most interesting possibility is if a independent merchant owner operator looks at it and goes "This has almost as much cargo capacity as a *_'Firefly'_* class ship, I'll get it.

Seems like a very good design overall, just needs a few upgrades/adjustments: 1) Needs at least one rear-mounted disruptor bank/cannon. The idea that it cannot properly defend itself unless attacking an enemy head-on may be in style with Klingon tradition, but it won't do you jack-shit if you're dead. The Klingon Empire can ill afford to lose such seasoned warriors and such valuable ships, especially after the slugging match that was the Dominion War. 2) Complete tech upgrade/overhaul. Klingons don't focus as much on R&D when compared to the Federation, but even the most hardened warrior will appreciate a shiny new, far more powerful pair of disruptor cannons mounted on his favorite ship. Better cloaks and stronger shields, as well as more durable hull plating, would also be beneficial.

I will only state, this class may be of "old" design, but they were constantly improved and upgraded all the time. "If it WORKS, don't fix it". When you have a design that is PROVEN, you don't run out making others needlessly.(like Star Fleet did). Waste money, resources......or go with what WORKS.
