I loved how they allowed Garak to be brutal and funny at the same time - lines such as "Major, I don't think I've ever seen you as ravishing" get you laughing in the midst of a tense standoff. :)

Just one word : Everyone . DS9 not only had to the most compelling stories , but simply the best Crew . Everybody had his or her own backstory , strengths and flaws , layered personality ... And the dynamic between the characters was exciting . Odo - Quark Garak - Bashir Kira - Dukat

DS9 seriously has the best character and story arcs of the franchise, and that includes Data's arc! I have noticed I fall for the alien characters because their back stories are so much more complex and interesting than Starfleet

@@sarahkinsey5434 You are right about the Starfleet officers having less interesting lives, and I think that could be because of the fact that they are Starfleet. Most of them have led sheltered lives that are almost congruent to each others due to the kind of egalitarian society the federation is. There isn't any war, poverty, or daily struggle to be witnessed on Earth, and that makes them complacent. But perhaps that is why DS9 is such a great show, because it deals with the range of people from Federation officers to struggling infant planets, and jaded occupiers, and puts them in a setting that is testing and consequential. So we get the development of Kira from a brash freedom fighter, to a peacetime leader and officer...Dukat's smug superiority as an occupier, to a twisted bumbling wreck seeking power, once lost in one form, to be found in another...and Sisko's Starfleet righteousness and ideal optimism tested and twisted to becoming a man who'd break those ideals for survival. The best of Trek IMHO.

Entek was a great character, very smart, very insidious, great voice, and I would have loved to see him return in another episode or two as a worthy foil for Garak. But, alas, he failed to realize no one can ever outsmart Garak...

Another great part of this episode was that earlier, when Cisco had basically used extortion to coerce Garak to come with him on the rescue, Garak had said "Look, if anything goes wrong with this operation, you all are on your own - to which Cisco replied "Mr Garak, i think that's the first completely honest thing you have ever said!"

In the Fifth Season, Andrew Robinson was made a regular, at least in the credits. I loved the show, no one character was all of it*, but boy was he a great part of it. *Sisko, with the Emissary plot line, was the biggest constant as a character IMO.

Anyone ever wonder if Garak ever deliberately baited Entek by turning his back to reduce the threat of the Order coming after him later? A part of me can't see him being careless enough to do that with a potential adversary

Garak wanted to shoot Entek from the start. but, he wasn't gonna "just do it" with witnesses. So, he essentially baited him into giving him a reason .... knowing he would take it. cuz you're right .... Elim Garak would NEVER turn his back to an adversary. he just as easily could have backed his way out of the room.

I think it was how quick his reflex was when he shot him that stunned Odo and Kira, both know you don't kill that instinctively without hesitation without a fair bit of experience. Second only to his hand to hand fight with Worf, his face when he very suddenly realized Garek knew how to fight VERY well...for a tailor.

Oh nothing much... probably engineer the slow agonizing death of every last thing that someone ever hoped for, dreamed of, or loved until they begged for death, then deny then even that and in that following moment of infinite despair tease them with something to live for that they thought lost to them and then causally kill them just slow enough for Garack to say "That was so very gratifying, I always hated you."
