@@blgrieb Aye! Here is a story, he drove a considerable distance (I think he was 80 at the time) to reprise Decker in one of the better fanfics before Paramount got bitchy about those. In this version when the shuttle blew up it, instead of killing Decker, it threw him through a time warp into Earth's past where he winds up with a woman who looks a helluva lot like Marlena Moreau (since it's actually Barbara Luna how helped the fanfic, too.) Very cool.

@@beastslayer3228 I disagree that he ruined it. This take was worse, as if it was ad-libbed than the one that ended up in the series. But I think it was imporant to include that because it shows that he is not in any condition to take command of the Enterprise.

Probably one of the BEST acted scenes, especially from a guest star, in ALL of TOS!!! Never knew this one existed, and this has been my FAVORITE episode since I was a boy in the '60s. I have seen this episode at least 100 times!!! The way William Windom comes off in the final take is moving, realistic and powerful. You can't help but feel sorry for the anguish he went through knowing that his crew was lost, and that, inadvertently, it was his fault. Bravo, never knew this existed. Thanks SO much for this!!! As I understand it, the normal eight days they had to shoot an episode was whittled down to five for "Doomsday Machine." The director was in such a hurry, and he had such faith in Mr. Windom, that he just left the camera on and let "Decker" do his thing. This looks to me like a first take, and what made the final cut was a more polished second take. That's my impression, anyway. What a fine performance! Also that sounds like Mr. Shatner's present to interact even though he's completely off camera for this take. He's supporting his fellow performer.

Thank you for this wonderful further peek into the sublime acting mettle of William Windom. In a way, this performance presages Windom’s acting turn in what is generally regarded as the finest episode of Rod Serling’s “Night Gallery” a couple years hence (“They’re Tearing Down Tim Riley’s Bar”). In the 1970 episode William Windom breaks down in front of a police officer when he realizes his life is a shambles owing to the loss of his wife and the fact that his last connection with a more innocent and pleasant past is about to be demolished (Tim Riley’s Bar). He regarded his role as aging salesman Randy Lane his finest performance.

Thank you for adding this outtake. When Decker talks about the crew begging for help I think of the transporter accident from ST:TMP-those unnatural screams and remember Kirk’s reaction. I can’t even imagine 400 calling out and screaming. Windom’s performance brings a lot of humanity to the character. It’s just sad that he had to die. The only way to make all those voices and screams stop. I believe in the James Blish novelization of this episode, Decker owned up to his mistakes with the Enterprise and retired. Agreed that the real ending was more dramatic than just having him retire.

Star Trek should do more stories similar to cosmic horror like this, that Being encountering strange and powerful things whose nature and reasoning is incomprehensible to us and we are at their mercy. One of the things they like about this episode is that implies at the end that there are more superweapons like the Doomsday machine wandering the universe. Windom did a great performance here, despite his character being a wreck of a man as a result of what he endured, and made some questionable decisions as a result, In the end goes out like a true starfleet officer and made a difference.

After John Lennon's murder, Paul McCartney was asked about the possibility of a Beatles reunion, bringing in Julian (John's first son, who looked and sounded exactly like dad, and was an accomplished musician as well). Paul said no, elaborating, "without John, it's not The Beatles. It might work, but it would be three former Beatles, and someone who was never a Beatle, There are no Beatles without John. He can't be replaced." Led Zeppelin said much the same thing upon breaking up after John Bonham's death. There are certain "roles" where the performer can not later be recast. It wasn't a botched decision, at all. The ship was "sinking". What the Doomsday Machine did was the equivalent of the Japanese or German's, or let's be honest, at times, US, machinegunning crew in lifeboats or in the water. Hell, with the Machine it wasn't even personal or even business exactly. It was ever only interested in the target, never what was on or inside, in the case of ships, the target.

William Windom was one reason "The Doomsday Machine" was nominated for a Hugo for Best Dramatic Presentation of 1967. Joan Collins' episode won. Need I go over the rest?

That was the same scene but a different take, imho the other one was a better performance. (both were great btw).

I read there was a scene filmed but not used from the episode, “Court Martial”, where the daughter of Ben Finney is seen onboard the Enterprise comforting her father in the engine room after his fight with Kirk... is that a scene you can present from your sources? Would love to see that. “Court Martial” could have/should have been a two-part episode-there was a lot of material there. Thanks in advance if you can post any video from that episode. If not, no worries-I loved the deleted scene you posted from “The City On the Edge of Forever”!

“Amok Time” is generally accorded the high water mark for the entire series-but more or less agree about the other two episodes.

I'd like to see a deleted scene from "Tomorrow is Yesterday" which was written by Dorothy Fontana (D.C.Fontana) an old high school alumnus of mine, who was graduated about 10 years before me.

Yes, I have listed 2 scenes from "Tomorrow Is Yesterday" by your wonderful friend, D.C. Fontana. I think we are all big fans of her and her amazing and gifted writing. I still have at least one more to upload from that episode. Thank you so very much for these highly excellent comments. May D.C. rest in peace. 👍🖖🏆

I'd say the Commodore was emotionally disabled to take command of the enterprise based on his state of being. Spock and sulu could have taken command anytime damn the regulations

This IS NOT a deleted scene!! This is a take that wasnt used. A deleted scene is a scene with content that does not appear in the final product.

Bill had issues with the director and disliked Shatner. One of about 3 actors Windom disliked in his whole career. In that scene he was thinking, when's lunch so I can continue my chess game. Bill was the continuous jokester. It was HIS ideas to the director that made this role. Something the director disliked as he didn't see the character as Bill did. Bill wanted to go as camp as possible and he did. I just dropped the trailer for my series of documentaries I'm doing on Bill.as.his official biographer (according to his daughter).

If they didn’t use this take, it’s because it was too intense.

My favorite episode of Star Trek. As a young kid, I thought Commodore Decker the bad guy. Now, decades and decades later, I have sympathy for the character. William Windom brought everything to that roll. It was HIS decision to portray Commodore Decker that way. The writers definitely had a more stable character in mind. As an aside, I always that Constitution Class starships were a little like the titanic. How could one transporter room of what, 9 transporter pads, beam down 430 crew in an emergency situation. I think they only had two shuttlecraft. Anyway, picky picky. Trivia. This episode was the first in which they showed the entire bridge 360 degrees. Also, the music might just be the best of the entire 3 seasons. There was one other later episode where they just duped the music from this episode.

Totally INTENSE scene and likely something that many generals in combat (meaning not DEI) have had to deal with. Actually, this scene was in some versions, including the one that I recorded. I will never forget it, it showed more humanity in ONE MINUTE than anything today's studios can produce in a year

What in the *bleep* does DEI have to do with it? You might look at some actual "DEI" history, like the Navajo Code Talkers or the Red Tails Squadron.
