The Earth Spacedock is probably one of my favourite models used in Star Trek. It made its début in the film Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. The footage filmed was then reused for the The Next Generation episode "11001001", although the model stood in for Starbase 74. The same footage continued to be recycled as Lya Station Alpha, Starbase 84, and Starbase 133.
For reference purposes, I have compiled all of its appearances in the Star Trek films. Design credits go to David Carson and Nilo Rodis at Industrial Light & Magic. All copyright to Paramount Pictures. This is a fair use video.

One of the more elegant, slender designs. From a time where combat readiness wasn't such a priority. Pre-Borg, pre-Dominion, pre-Starfleet being caught with its britches down.

Kirk or Sisko, it's honestly hard to judge. They both had a similar "cowboy" command style, though Sisko was much less of a womanizer. But they're by far the most similar of the Star Trek captains. I think I have to give a slight nod to Sisko, though, due to his actions in the Dominion War; Kirk never really got an opportunity to show off tactics beyond single ship-on-ship combat. Both are badasses, though.

I totally agree that the Earth Space Dock is one of the coolest things ever created in any sci-fi franchise! I used to wonder what it would be like to live and work in one of these structures. I think that is part of the reason I love STAR TREK ONLINE. Because after all the years of wanting to visit inside one of these, I am finally able to walk around INSIDE Earth Space Dock! It's great to be able to check out the different sections and offices, to get to see and interact with tons of people working in Earth Space Dock, the great views looking out the big windows, and don't forget about Club 47 up on deck 47 -- if your PC has good speakers Club 47 is a great place to just sit and relax after a hard days work and just listen to the music. Being able to finally visit Earth Space Dock is like a dream come true for a Trek fan. Your video reminds me how much I have always wanted a big door-sized poster of Earth Space Dock for my wall.

Lt. Valeris is played by a pre-Sex and the City Kim Cattrall. The role was originally meant to be Kirstie Alley reprising Lt. Saavik from Wrath of Kahn, but IIRC Leonard Nimoy objected to the character being a traitor, and thus Valeris was created as an expy of her. That's also why the reaction is what it was amongst the crew - it was meant to remind Kirk of the last time Saavik quoted regulations at him that he ignored.

Mirin Brah Obviously it's because having the illusion of zero-G on set would be prohibitively expensive and difficult to film, but in-universe, I have always thought it must be because the gravity generators keep a charge long after the main power to them is cut off. Like how just because you lose power to your house, doesn't mean your house gets cold right away, or your fridge gets room temp. Entropy takes time.

The particle might exist in a highly excited state leading to an exotic element..or we might be able to restrain the particles in a Gravity boot and use as needed. There is a Theory that we can actually exceed light speed to the 10th power. This is exactly what we will need to cover the vast distances in our Universe. It might also open portals to other dimensions as well as open worm holes. I'd take the first flight or space escapade.

+compmanio36 It would be pretty poor if they hadn't mastered some kind of artificial gravity on a faster than light ship of the 23rd century! there was that scene in Star Trek 6 when the gravity on the Klingon ship was sabotaged so as well as life support the artificial gravity plating must have its own reserve energy power!

I love the scene where Kirk and crew steal the Enterprise. Because after Starfleet denies Kirk's request to return to the Genesis planet with the Enterprise to search for Spock, he is then like "Ah, fuck Starfleet orders, I'm stealing my baby to rescue my best friend!" (even though he destroys the Enterprise later on). Kirk sometimes disobeyed orders in TOS, but he never went to a great length like this.

+katakisLives Well, the design concept dated from the Federation-Klingon War so it was almost certainly intended to accommodate and shield a reasonably sized fleet if necessary. Later, tensions between the Klingons and Federation ease while the Romulans go into isolation for many years. So, while ships get larger there is less need to have as 'many' of them in a standing battle fleet, at any one station.

Chief Engineer Scott was the discoverer and designer of TransWarp drive. He insisted that it be installed in the Enterprise but Starfleet wanted it in the Excelsior. Scotty fought Starfleet to the point where this point when he stole major computer chips for TransWarp. Section 31 personnel went after Scotty to the point where Scotty escaped to his accidental meeting with the Dyson Sphere. After his rescue by Enterprise D Capt Picard dug into Scott's past and confronted him about it in the original Enterprise bridge holodeck.

I love the scene steeling Enterprise our of space dock, its by far one of the best, building up tension as they approach space dock doors and then the movement of Enterprise in the Z access as it maneuvers away from the doors with Excelsior in pursuit. That must have been something to coordinate considering everything was done with models. Though I know they were using motion control computers to run the stop action and could recreate any part of that action for different layers of the process. Matts and what not. Sorry to ask, but could the audio be boosted by several dB's? I've got both You Tube cranked and computer volume and speakers all the way up, and it's still very low audio. I wish the internet had a standard audio level that could be followed, some stuff is very loud then other stuff comes up low. I suspect this video is low because it came from original clips with 5.1 audio, and the dynamic range is just that quiet to start with. Thanks, I appreciate you finding all these clips; I always loved seeing that space dock.

I often wonder if the spacedock model still exists! I remember hearing that the interior set was dismantled after this movie (rather short sighted of them) and had to be rebuilt after for later movies! they made good used of reusing the existing footage later on and there is nothing wrong with that but if they had retained the sets and models it would have been pretty easy for them to shoot new footage of the interior and exterior of this most iconic of starfleet facilities.

It took me decades to realise, Scotty didn't hack the space doors, The Space Dock Operator was ordered to opened them to prevent the destruction of the Enterprise and damage to Space Dock. They saw the Enterprise wasn't going to stop and said "Open the doors! The Excelsior's been ordered to pursue them." and then Scotty took the credit. lol
