Also my favourite class of vessel. I am surprised (and saddened) how that even though the Excelsior class was the backbone of starfleet, we didn't get to see one in a series as the main star ship.

The Excelsior is one of the all time great Federation vessels! @danmiguel12607 жыл бұрын
What would be cool to see is Capt. Sulu get brought into the 24th Century. From there, he gets to command a Sovereign Class Star Ship named USS Yamato. If they create a Star Trek series that features Captain Worf, he should command an Excelsior Class Star Ship named USS Victory... I was happy to see the Excelsior Class star ship still in service. Compared to when it was first commissioned, the ship is tiny compared to the Galaxy Class star ship.

The Excelsior class always seems to get it's arse handed to it when you think of the amount of Excelsior's we've seen shot up over the years - but that's only because the Excelsior class proliferates Starfleet (how many Excelsiors are in that big fleet?!), and *that's* surely because it was such a successful design. Strong enough to kick arse when called upon, not too large, not too small, well armed. All in all, a design that truly represents the best of the fleet.

Either Term works for the Federation they would be Classified as Battlecruisers in other racs like Romulan Cardassian and Klingon they would be Battleships. But the Excelsiors where ships of war that simple.
@50Stone13 жыл бұрын
The longevity of the Excelsior is truly remarkable, a testament to her designers, or the laziness of the Trek people. I subscribe to the former reason though. She must have been designed with the idea or upgrade in mind, plenty of space for better equipment and modifications built into the initial design.

My admiration for the Excelsior continues unabated. As someone else here indicated. An old design doesn't make for an old ship. Even one commisioned in the first batch back in the 2280s would be completely equipped with modern tech. The only real factor would be the age of its hull and late 24th century engineering practices would likely negate that. Plus most of the Excelsiors shown in the series were more recent ships built from the 2310s to 2360s so hull age isn't really a factor.

Also until CGI (Operation Return was last big battle before full CGI) the Excelsior was the most common model that wasn't a featured ship. That is why so many of them were wreaked at Worf 359 (and the footage used over) because quite simply the production team went to the hobby store and bought a load of them.

@albatani27 Well if you think about it, most admirals would be at least over 50, and anyone over that age would remember the excelsior class in it’s prime from there childhood, so nostalgia is probably the reason.

I have a Vesper Class in STO now but it isn't the Excelsior Class. The main hull section and the deflector are the same, but nacelles, pylons, saucer and neck sections are diffrent. It's more like a successor of the Excelsior class, like the Galaxy Class was a successor of the Ambassador Class.

You know it's a successful design if it became the backbone of Starfleet. StarTrek's official site once said there were 200 ships of that type and it was the general purpose ship (along with the Miranda class of 150 ships) going into the 24th century. I have not seen any of the Dominion War or hardly any of Deep Space Nine. What was going on with the Defiant attacking that Excelsior class ship (1:08)? Was one of them hijacked?

Wait a minute. When it was first seen in Search for Spock, the Excelsior was comparable in size to the Constellation class Enterprise. This shows it on the far side of a Galaxy class ship and it's a near match?
@NightwishRaven9993 жыл бұрын
You're mistaken, my friend. In Search for Spoke and in all TMP era films, the Excelsior was HUGE compared to the Constitution class Enterprise. The Constitution is a bug compared to the Excelsior. Hence McCoy stating "My god. That's a BIG ship." in ST VI. At the time of ST III, the Federation had never produced any startship even remotely close to that size. You can google the size difference between the two ships. The Connie is at the 300 meter range while the Excelsior is pushing 511 meters (according to the DS9 technical manual). While not really as wide/bulky as many of the larger 24th century ship classes, the Excelsior is still very much one of the larger cruiser classes in the fleet.

Well when "old designs" stay in service for a long time, they're not really "old designs" any more, because all the old working components have long since been swapped out for modern alternatives.
