This is young, brash Kirk learning that there's more to leading than having bravado and sitting in The Chair. There are people's lives in his hands and true to Kirk's nature (In ANY reality and regardless of nurture), he'll die for his ship and crew AND HE DOES, earning the respect and gratitude of his crew and solidifying his friendship with Mr. Spock. At the end of 'Into Darkness', he's grown and matured into the James T. Kirk we all know and love. He even ditches the catchphrases 'punch it' and instead instructs Mr. Sulu to, 'take us out' onto Starfleet's 5 year mission of exploration. Amazing film with characters who really go on journey into moral darkness and come back changed, and stronger and more united than ever.
@mariakai10 жыл бұрын
One of the best descriptions I have read so far :). This Kirk is young and inexperienced and doesn't think about the consequences of his actions, but the experience with Khan and Marcus teaches him what it truly means to be a Captain.
@drlee29 жыл бұрын
***** Agreed. Kirk was the best character in this film (to me) because we got to see him learn, progress, and grow as a character. I thought Pine was extremely underrated in this.
@stars90848 жыл бұрын
Right, and even stronger, especially for someone who seemingly had so much pride, he's not just willing to die for his crew, but to beg for them. That, to me, was probably the most powerful scene in the movie

What's wrong with him saying "punch it"? Pike said it a few times and he was WAY more disciplined than Kirk was.

Old comment but yeah you're right. In Star Trek Beyond the maturity shows a lot. We don't really see the overblown cockiness of Kirk there, he's a lot more mature and thoughtful there. The others all trust him explicitly as well. We see that Spock and Kirk are good friends there as well.

I'm often angry at Kirk and blasting him, but in that last minute of this video clip, I can relate to him more than I've ever related to most anyone. And I have a friend who is very much like Spock, and the way that conversation plays out between Kirk and Spock is similar to how my friend and I face off. "What I'm about to do -- it doesn't make any sense; it's not logical; it is a _gut feeling_." I can't justify my predictions, which he thinks invalidates them. But they end up coming to pass!

@EthanJohn198610 жыл бұрын
I am not complaining ...I mean not about that. I wanted to see Pine show emotion vulnerablity and he did wonderfully in this...all of the Khan stuff was silly though and undeeded....and stupid to hide from the audience when it was SO obvious...I wish they just made it more original...but i love the performances.
@drlee210 жыл бұрын
Ethan John No, I wasn't directing my "complaining" part at you. I was just saying that from the first film, many people complained that there was little to no character detail and development. And I was agreeing with you that in this film, we actually GOT depth of character, especially from Pine as Kirk. We got to see him really command, strategize, think, all the while capturing the essence of Shatner's mannerisms and style without going overboard. You could really see it in Pine's performance. But still, I don't see near enough praise of Pine's work in this. At least you and I appreciate him!

Ohhhhhh ok :P sorry. Yes in the first movie Kirk seemed like a grouch and he was too blase and cool...i wanted him to FUCKING EMOTE!! so when PIKE DIES and Pine's face shrivels up like that with tears i was moved and DELIGHTED that we got a PERFORMANCE out of pine this time and some vulnerablity to kirks character.

***** Oh my, junior psychologist here. And getting personal about matters of opinion regarding science fiction. I don't agree with you therefore I must be a complete dumb dumb head, durr hurr. Look, Troi's empathic abilities were next to useless, for the most part. Her observations were little more useful than those of someone who is good at reading tone of voice and body language. And people who are getting involved in long missions far from home in an isolated environment (like, say, submarine crews) typically go through mental evaluations beforehand to make sure that they don't get all freaked out under pressure. If you're having mental issues in spite of that, you should have some meds to deal with it and you can talk to your shrink when you get back to the local Starbase. Troi was there because she looked cute in her bunny suit, that's pretty much it. And it's not smart to have families, and children for that matter, on a ship that is exploring the frontiers of known space and confronting dangers untold because...well..you don't really want innocents getting mangled and killed when the ship gets attacked. The Enterprise is as much a military vessel as an exploratory one, and you don't bring the spouse and kids along when you're possibly getting into life and death situations on a regular basis. Kind of hard to focus on your job during battlestations if you're worried that your kids are on fire or have been exposed to hard vacuum when the deck they were on was amongst those affected by an enemy attack. I love my family just fine. And that's exactly why I wouldn't want to bring them on a mission off on the final frontier and put them in danger.

I understand that many viewers have argued that Spock is more of the captain than Kirk because he thinks things through and Kirk just basically does stuff. David Stahl I wonder why they are portraying Kirk this way in the reboot series. It makes the audience think he is a charlatan that barely does any of the responsibilities as a leader. Seriously, JJ Abrams had no idea what he was doing when he is rebooting by making Spock look like a hero while making Kirk look like some kind of puppet. Let us hope that changes in Star Trek Beyond.

@KostasRed77711 жыл бұрын
Well , thats probably because in the previous scene Uss vengeance decimated the Enterprise and it is quite logical to say their shields were down by the enemy fire .. as for Khan he might not have been able to transport him because he was behind a forcefield in the Brig ( ship had SOME auxiliary power after all that could support a forcefield. Later with the augmented humans he couldnt transport them because Enterprise had raised shields again ? idk ..!! transported technology at that era was pretty primitive , even for USS Vengeance which was more advanced than any Starfleet ship sooo .. there could be interference that prevented them ! After all , They didn't have Scotty , O'brien or B'elanna Torres on their Engineering team did they ? :P
@AnhTrieu9010 жыл бұрын
KostasRed777 I don't think he need to transport Khan to the Vengeance because it's easier to just destroy the Enterprise along with Khan and the Augmented people altogether.
@Potrimpo10 жыл бұрын
If there is an opening in the shields, a transporter beam can penetrate. This has been demonstrated before many times. Now during the time that Scotty turned off the Vengeance and Kirk arresting Marcus, there was a chance of restoring partial shielding around the gap that, as an example from Journey To Babel, firming up the buckled shield #3 with auxiliary power even though that shield is still weak after the diverting. Remember in the event of damage of any extent, the engineering team don't sit around with their thumbs up their nose waiting for the redshirt curse to claim them, they try to make what ever repairs they can do. Reroute power, bypass computer control, put out fires, replace damaged relays, and so forth.
