Joining enterprise may include, but is not limited to: Borg encounters, including assimilations, going from being human back to a primitive species, being in a continuous time loop, and also, be cautious of that drink your holding, there is a chance it could spill due to an attack, while also at the same time slamming you around like a rag doll. Once a week, you will probably be at risk of death, but don’t worry! There was a time where everyone forgot who they were! The android on board has a psycho brother named lore, who is kind of a threat! But don’t worry. Data has only locked everyone out of the bridge, and taken control of the ship only once…so far! Senior staff include captain Picard. He likes his tea hot, and his drama even hotter! Commander riker. He’s number 1! He likes to sit funny, and also has a clone! Worf, he’s a Klingon. He always gets told no. That’s it. Deanna troi, ships counselor. if you have an eating disorder, think twice, she’s quite a snack. Just ask riker clone! Commander data! Read above. Geordi laforge. Chief engineer. If you’ve ever loved your car, think again. Geordi loves his engine so much, it supersedes your antique means of transportation. Also blind, but not really. Dr crusher… the Diet Coke version of Deanna troi. Sign here.

Even though the Romulans "won" in this instance, because the Enterprise found out about the ruse, it forced the Romulan Commander to reveal that she had been a spy. As a result, Star fleet could now review all of the "Ambassador's" record to see what areas of security might have been compromised by her espionage.

I did too. Despite the fact the Enterprise came in weapons hot. The 2nd warbird basically was extra display of power and even if the Enterprise started to fire, she would've been heavily damaged after the fight. The 2 war birds would also be heavily damaged or possibly destroyed. But luckily Picard knew he was made and was looking at a losing position. That is one of the best portrayals of a romulan ever. He does not yell and almost whispers, calmy. He's already won the game and is merely waiting for you to realize it. He's already prepared for sore losers, the second raptor you never knew about decloaks off your starboard flank. It was there the entire time waiting incase this very thing happened. Even after repeated loud, threatening interruptions from Picard the Romulan calmy returns a silk wrapped threat that he is not ready to start a war, "today". 1 vs 1, then 2 vs 1, suddenly 3 more for 5 vs 1 yet still he remains calm. The harshest his words ever get is when he pulls the silk back just a little while saying his patience has "limits". He wins before he fights so he doesn't have to, and if forced to fight then it changes nothing and wouldn't last long. Hell he was cruising at warp 2 and let's the Enterprise catch him because it was powerless. More of this Romulan please! Make it a double shot.

Well, there's a bit more to it than that because the Romulan really isn't ready to start a war. He has enough backup to destroy the Enterprise easily, but if he does, it will mean war with the Federation, and he doesn't want that. Picard knows this, which is why he doesn't back off straightaway even though he knows he's in a weak position tactically. The Romulan then concedes just a little bit, by admitting to the spying operation to show that he isn't actually holding an ambassador hostage. But Picard doesn't want to start a war either, and he also doesn't want to get his ship destroyed (he would if he had to, but on this occasion the stakes aren't high enough to die for), and the Romulan knows this too. It's a game of poker, as Data says. Nobody really wants to start shooting, but somebody is going to have to back down to diffuse the situation, and given the strength of the Romulan's hand, it isn't going to be him. So Picard knows he has to fold, this time (but at least he's found out the truth, which means he hasn't lost completely). Again, just like a game of poker between two experienced and savvy players.

If you watch and really pay close attention to TNG, you'll find a lot of nods and homages to TOS. Some are obvious, but some you need to be paying close attention. I've been a fan and watching Star Trek series and movies since the mid 70s and have seen every ep of every series a million times each, but I'm sure even I have missed some of them. I find more all the time though. I think Voyager has more nods to TOS though. Especially the doctor, or EMH. He was always saying "I'm a doctor, not a....blank blank". However, I don't think I ever heard him say "He's dead Katherine!" LOL

2:40 I love how the main viewer shows the side of the guy instead of just showing the front of him like a normal TV would. it's 'wrong' - you can't see around an object on a modern screen by moving your head; it's a flat screen. Screens don't work that way. And yet they had to block the actors and position the cameras and composite that shot specifically get the effect. They didn't accidentally blunder into it. They did it on purpose. So the only other alternative is this is a weird 3d screen, where you actually can see different perspectives depending on where you're viewing the screen from. So basically the show gives us this really subtle bit of worldbuilding, where we find out the main viewer is like a 3d holo display, and yet there isn't a single line of 'as you know, ha ha ha' dialogue, because it's just something normal to them. So subtle, but so great

This is top notch Sir Stewart.. you could quite literally feel the distaste he had in his heart and soul for having to have not only been played by “T’Pel” but to furthermore have to tuck the tail of the Federation’s Flagship and “retreat” back into Federation Space.. not only the tone in which he says engage but the over the shoulder sharp point (whereas in almost any other moment he calls out “Engage”, his point is direct and infront as if he’s gazing down his finger like a sight line, leading the way..) Here however he throws his ‘Signature Gesture’ disdainfully over his shoulder, visibly disgusted by the very order he just had to utter.

I’m not sure reasonable would be the way I’d describe him. It was more like he knew that he’d won, that no matter what the Enterprise did, the Romulans would come out winners. They had their spy back, practically gifted by the unwitting Starfleet and the Enterprise was too heavily outnumbered to do anything than a suicidal attack which would have kicked off a war neither side wanted. I do sort of regret that more couldn’t have been resolved by diplomacy.

The irony is Tomalak came off as comical. The Romulans were the Federation's match. It's just their behavior sometimes was stupid and made them come off as comical. Their first appearance on the show was threatening. But then Tomalak made them come off as comical. "The Mind's Eye" - the torture scene was somewhat comical but that's because the ending makes it so, it's like the Romulans are destined to fail against the Federation, then "Reunification" does seem kind of comical as well. The other episodes were dead serious episode. "Tin Man" was probably the most menacing the Romulans were because they actually fight the D. The Romulans pride themselves on plotting and getting away with it, only when it comes to bite them in the ass, it's actually kind of funny.

Funny thing about this is this episode is set a year after the incident when they had two Romulan warbirds vs the Enterprise and the secret 3 Klingon birds of prey. The Romulans never knowing if Picard might have them are forced to reinforce their 2 warbirds with 3 more ships. Lot of resources just in case Picard might have extra ships.
@TechnoMageB5

Good reminder. Romulans overprepared in order not to be caught off guard underestimating Picard. Picard was in a different scenario here, though. In "The Defector", he was responding to a potential threat developing in real time, thus very wisely prepared hidden backup resources in the form of cloaked Klingon ships. Here he was following strict orders from Starfleet. Those orders were effectively chains on his options. Combine those chains with the Romulans overpreparing, this is the only result possible.

Makes sense since technically the Vulcans were the ones who made First Contact. It's plausible the transporters, engines, shields, weapons .etc from the Federation would have Vulcan signatures meaning their tech would be very similar to the Romulans.
@jamesbuchanan4414
@jamesbuchanan4414 Жыл бұрын
Except that the Romulan migration from Vulcan happened during the time of Surak. They left Vulcan in 12 sublight generation ships that took a century or more to reach the Romulus/Remus system. Their tech, especially their advanced tech, is entirely home grown.
@TechnoMageB5
@TechnoMageB5 Жыл бұрын
@@jamesbuchanan4414True, but all tech functions on the same principles. Modifying transporter frequencies might be as simple as modifying European generators that supply power at 240 volts 50 Hertz to 60 Hertz and splitting the voltage in half to become compatible with American standard - a few modifications ahead of time, and you'd never know there was a change in the first place. And given the "ambassador" was a key element in arranging this transfer in the first place, it wouldn't be difficult to get such fundamental specs over to her comrades to make such preparations, as every first year basic civilian course in transporter engineering would contain such data.

The thing that often surprises me is that, by the 24th century we're often supposed to believe that humans "live in paradise" and "have evolved beyond what we are today". They don't have the same selfish drives we do, or the needs to have them. They are optimistic, and often look for the "nicest" option in many scenarios. Obviously, this isn't always true; I've watched plenty of Star Trek to see this veneer slip, and humans be much more like we are today, but still... Conversely, the Romulans, one would think, would have an amazing poker game/face. EVERYTHING about them is deception, intrigue, and getting the best for themselves. It's weird that the happy humans ever come out on top with the shifty, sneaky, Romulans. Maybe it's just because it's always Picard and crew, from our perspective? Oh well.
