Star Trek Section 31 is Paramount's attempt at a spy show in Alex Kurtzman's universe. But as his universe is the dark days of low quality writing, stereotypes for 2 dimensional characters and a plot that entirely contradicts itself. When I heard Section 31 was a TV series that was being transformed and cut down into a movie, we all knew what it would be like. People teleporting all over the place, Marvel humour that would make a 5 year old look upon you with disdain at your childishness. We lack any moral quandaries, Star Trek like qualities but plenty of Michelle Yeoh being up taller, stronger and younger men. This is the comedic disaster you'd expect. But what did you think of what you saw? Let me know your thoughts down below and as always, thanks for watching :)

These are the hallmarks of bad writing... 1. Plots with random events that go nowhere. AKA the "mystery box" or the "Abram's Knife". If plot events happen with seeming randomness where there is no real relationship of one event to another and things that were important are thrown away and forgotten? You're watching a terrible show with awful writing. 2. Main characters that are unlikable, evil, or otherwise despicable. Good writing follows characters people are interested in and seek to aspire to. Lousy writing competes to make characters more awful for the sake of being awful and do awful things to everyone. If you are ever reading or watching a show full of despicable people? It's terrible writing. 3. Protagonist who is perfect and learns nothing. If the protagonist goes through the story and is the same person as when they started ... namely a 'perfect' invincible, person that always curbstomps everyone like its a cakewalk? This is lousy writing. 4. The story tries to throw people into relationships just to see them bang each other? Constant shipping for its own sake ... especially of established characters who would NOT be doing such things ... is the laziest hack writing of a fanfic loser. Kurtzman Trek was/is all this. Its lousy writing and I'll never give it one second of my time.
@Pepesilvia267Күн бұрын
I’m reminded of First Contact and the journey Picard goes on. By then his character has been on so many journeys he should be perfect but he’s dealing with PTSD from being borg and the lives he took. But other characters go through journeys and growth. In modern trek I’d settle for just 1 journey.
@BobMcBobJrКүн бұрын
Ooooo, I really like the term "Abram's Knife" because it very accurately depicts what is wrong, a plot thread that is just randomly "cut" to give the happenings a mysterious atmosphere. I like this better than "mystery box" because you CAN in fact do a mystery box right (though we usually just call it a mystery then). If you have a thing/event that is mysterious you can reveal it later in the movie/TV series (in a world and character consistent manner) to make the audience go "Ohhhhh, that's how/what ...." and it can be satisfying. But, too often, the box is just put on the shelf and forgotten about by the writers.
@throwdown177623 сағат бұрын
I'd have disagree with point 2. You can make unlikable, evil main characters, you just need to stop making them have redeemable qualities or making them "quirky". Eric cartman is a great example of a character being a peice of shit, but you cant help but watching more of him. Boardwalk Empire and The Sopranos are masters of that. You just need to either stop playing and go all in on the evilness, or give them something that the writers don't know; professionalism and class
@josephfisher42618 сағат бұрын

What the hell is it with Hollywood trying to make EVERY damn thing into 1) Suicide Squad, 2) Guardians of the Galaxy? It's as though those are the only plot tropes they can emulate anymore. Neither of those movies (like them or not) were popular or objectively good enough to have this kind of influence, it's totally artificial.

They were financially successful. That’s about it.
@barnbwt10 сағат бұрын
@@erroneous6947 But they weren't the only ones that were successful, were they? There's gotta be more to it; I think the larger cast makes it possible to spread more wealth around. We all know that modern Hollywood is not particularly interested in producing beloved art OR financial return, or they wouldn't be blowing literal billions per year on amateur-hour crap, over and over again. I'd almost bet money that something about these 'ensemble cast' movies/shows makes it easier to (essentially) launder money. More actors, more...everything; shooting locations, assistants, caterers, costumes, minutes of footage, producers, agents, hotels, drivers, stunt doubles, more demand (ie higher billing) for managers of all kinds...and all of it can be padded or even skimmed without alerting the studio heads, so long as you can convince them this bloated idiot of a project is a surefire way to appeal to the most customers. So you hire some woke consultants (billable!) to make that claim to the corporate execs, and also hook them up with chinese-funded ESG investment groups willing to finance the project (for a price). Everyone wins; the executives get 'business development bonuses' for securing investor cash, the Chicoms backing the investors get to destroy/influence Hollywood as a strategic project in the long term, everyone involved in the production makes more money on a needlessly inflated project scope in the short term. And Hollywood even lobbies the Democrat Party to pursue policies which send American dollars back to China to sustain the ESG funding scheme.

Benevolent dictator: Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus When a Roman consul got himself surrounded by an army, the senate approached a retired Cincinnatus on his farm and appointed him Dictator. He raised an army and forced a bloodless surrender of the enemy army in 2-weeks. Immediately surrendered his dictatorship. The second time he was made dictator, he thwarted an overthrow of the senate in 3-weeks. Immediately surrendered his dictatorship. The morale of the story? Cincinnati may suck, but its namesake was a hero.

I really think a lot of writers need to read some actual gritty and immoral characters because to me it really feels like most writers are only able to write for teens and younger. I'm not talking about being edgy like gore, sexual themes or any of the things that most people go oh this is for adults. Like I'm not a huge star trek fan but Section 31 definitely seemed to be the kind of people who will as evil as necessary for the sake of greater good. If a good person has to die or has information and needs to be tortured to get it out of them to complete their mission and that will save lives than they'll do what is required. A Section 31 story should be here's the situation and the reality is X character has only a few limited options (all messed up) and by doing these evils things, it saves good people having to. They need to be hard as nails, straight faced (Nothing can bother them because they've already done it) and they're not looking to be moral, follow normal rules or waste their time looking for another solution to protect themselves from the horrors or their own ideals. Their only ideal is does this action complete my mission and protect the federation, if you ask them to kill a child. They don't say no, they ask what kill method. Yes you could have characters who waver, question them/themselves or trying other things while Section 31 is doing their own thing but we should see them doing messed up things. It should not be them being a quirky little group, but people who have seen hell and will wade through blood and fire when required of them. People who gave up their humanity to allow others to keep their own.
@bad-people6510Күн бұрын
Can we talk about how temporally baffling this is? We have our Hunger Games rip off which should reasonably take place (in so far as it should take place at all) somewhere around 2200 to 2210. However, two of the characters from it are in a plot line that takes place apparently in 2326 (Although if gives a stardate that corresponds to 2266) It also features a character in Rachel Garret, who was born in 2290. Large portion of the plot revolve around a Mirror Universe that operates more similarly (although less Machiavellian) to the pre-2267 Mirror Universe. So if it's taking place in 2266, one character shouldn't be born, and if its taking place after 2266 two of the characters should be dead, and the Terran Empire should either be in the midst of its reform, or has been dismantled. There is no time period in which this story can occur.

I thought Deltans' effect on Humans was due to their very potent, naturally produced, pheromones. So being bald is not an issue, it's irrelevant. An example in nature is some orchid species that mimic female wasps. They don't look very similar but the smell they produce is very, very close to the real female wasp. And it drives the males crazy! . New Trek is Not Star Trek. Section 31 is just another bad instalment.
