I saw this in the cinema aged 5 and most of it went over my head. I'm 50 now and my appreciation for the movie has grown over the years, it's a beautiful old thing, still looks stunning and give you plenty of time to drink up the visuals. I enjoy it even more with each viewing. Thanks for the 20 things, I knew several but not them all.

I find it to be the opposite: the worst - or at least second worst - entry. Star Trek lacks a compelling story, most acting is terrible, as is the overall aesthetic. The movie tries to copy Space 2001 too much with its overlong shots and scenes. Compared to its direct successor, one of the best ST movies, it really can't hold up.

I saw it in the theater when I was 8 years old. Didn't really appreciate it then, but over the years, it came to be my 2nd favorite film of the series.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is best appreciated when viewed in tandem with Gene Roddenberry's novelization of the film. Compared to Star Trek: Insurrection (that comes off as a TV movie), ST: TMP had a more cinematic feel. Jerry Goldsmith's main title theme was one of the best movie tunes. A variation of it, 'Enterprise' can be heard during Adm. James T. Kirk's and Cmdr. Montgomery Scott's inspection of the refitted USS Enterprise in Spacedock.

Insurrection comes off as a TV movie? That seems about right. I'll take it, as it's Star Trek, but it certainly isn't Star Trek at its best. I'm glad I didn't pay to see it in a theatre.

Seeing this at a relatively young age, I would never have guessed there were so many complications. You never think about how weird the process of production might have been when you see the end product. I just went to the theater exited to see a big screen Star Trek. The nagging thoughts kind of disappear. Suspension of disbelief I think they call it.

Star Trek : The Motion Picture is a good film, tho a little slow. But Star Trek II : The Wrath Of Khan will always be the best of the Trek movies. And it's Star Trek at it's very best.

TMP is closer to Gene Roddenberry's vision of Star Trek than any of the other films. He wanted a cerebral epic, not an action-adventure popcorn flick. If any movie is Star Trek, it's the first one. (I love TWOK, BTW.)

I feel like one of the main appeals of this movie was that it was sort of officially welcoming Star Trek to the big screen, and welcoming the cast back after many years, and making Star Trek more relevant again. They re-introduced the classic characters, introduced new characters, showed off the USS enterprise, brought back all the old terms, and the favorite things on the ship like the transporter, phasers, and photon torpedoes. So I think it had a strong appeal when it first got released, but it didn't age as well as many of the other Star Trek films with the original cast. The main reason being, it wasn't really that good of a movie! It was much too long, slow moving and boring, and even when you get to the big finish, it wasn't all that amazing, interesting or impressive. Also, the new uniforms that were introduced in this film were completely changed by the 2nd film, several of the new characters who were introduced were already gone by the end of the movie, and basically, there wasn't much that was introduced in this movie that had any relevance in any of the future films. So it just makes Star Trek - The Motion Picture feel somewhat irrelevant, out of place, boring and unnecessary. I do enjoy watching it from time to time for nostalgia, but I honestly think they could have just skipped this movie and "The Wrath of Kahn" could have been the first official Star Trek movie.

An exceptionally unsuccessful piece of cinema. The ending made me laugh. A veritable circus in which a supercivilization leans over a pile of scrap thrown into space. Probably because it said "made in USA". What nonsense.

Star Trek : Motion Picture was the reason why Gene Rodenberry was not allowed near the rest of the films, or the Uniform designs the rest looked good but those Uniforms were awful, it was boring at times, the effects and visuals were and still are impressive, the new ship is impressive, The Wrath of Khan is a true Star Trek film, the gritty edge, slightly dirty ships and smart red uniforms and real Military/Navy Ranks and Rank pins and more substantial insignias on the smart red Uniforms which made the actors walk taller

Everything you mentioned everybody knows about this how about mentioning that director Robert Wise took the subplot the animosity between Captain Kirk and Commander Decker with the commander feeling extremely resentful after temporarily being replaced as Captain from his classic movie run silent run deep also the character of xon being a full Vulcan and wanting to experience The human condition better with the crew would sometimes display human emotions that character and a character called questor a Android from a failed Gene Roddenberry pilot the questor tapes would be integrated and lieutenant Commander Data was born bet you didn't know that
