That and the classic Red Alert sound were added to the Director's Cut which IMO just makes the film warmer in many ways versus the cold sterile feel the theatrical cut has. I was so glad the Red Alert sound was changed too as well as the mechanical voices being removed as well like the scene where the travel pod docks and the voice saying "Pod secured" was removed in the Director's Cut.

Love that the Director's cut fixed the dimensions of the V'ger cloud. 2 AU's is a lot easier to swallow than 82 AU's in diameter.

I hope somebody bothers to remake the Director's Edition one of these days, give it a Wrath of Khan: Director's Cut treatment on Blu-ray. To my understanding, the effects used for the Director's Edition were lost when the FX company went bankrupt and were standard definition anyway, meaning they would be very blurry and obviously digital shots when integrated into film footage
@TrekkieChannel6 жыл бұрын
I doubt it will ever happen. The Director's Edition was made back when Paramount was the owner of the franchise, but they didn't want to invest too much into it. The effects were done by Foundation Imaging and they stored all of their models on servers, not on individual computers. When they lost their Star Trek deal, they went bankrupt. They offered Paramount to buy their assets, they were not interested. So the company sold all of their assets, which included the server with all of the data on it. What happened later with the models is unknown, but I guess the first thing the new owner did was wiping the hard discs. The good news is that some of the employees used to make copies of their models, so "some" of them still exist. When they planned to release the movie on Blu-ray, the studio again didn't want to invest in re-doing the effects, which means we got only the theatrical cut.
@cubdukat5 жыл бұрын
TrekkieChannel As you probably already know, they’ve had a change of heart. According to them, they’re seriously investigating an HD version of the DE. I suspect that among the model and scene data Mojo Leibowitz was able to recover for “What We Left Behind” was also some TMP data. Even if it doesn’t, now that “Star Trek” has been “unificated,” so to speak, maybe Paramount could be convinced to cough in a couple of bucks for some new CGI (ILM, anyone?) It would be one of their smartest decisions about the franchise they’ve made in years...

zred99 Same reason why they can't release Ds9 in blu Ray I guess
@chindleymuffin7 жыл бұрын
The reason they can't do Blu Rays of DS9 is that the digital effects made by Foundation Imaging (same team who did Voyager and Babylon 5 effects) were rendered on standard definition video (Betamax I believe) instead of film, as they didn't have enough time or money to transfer the effects to film stock. Also I have read that Foundation Imaging didn't do a back up the models they used for DS9 (or Voyager) after production ended. So if they did try to recreate the effects, they would have to rebuild the 3D models from scratch. This differed from ToS and TNG, where everything was shot on film, labelled and recorded extensively; so the HD transfer from original film stock was relatively straightforward to do. As most effects were CG on video for DS9, the show was edited on computer for the first time (to speed up production), so all the production notes were on computer as well, instead of being written down. Its standard practice these days, but due to external companies working on effects, nothing was backed up at the time.
