For a supposedly logical being, Sarek doesn't do much to hide his contempt for spock. Barely looking at him, not returning Spocks salute, nor giving Spock one, plus requesting another officer show them around. Sarek is throwing Spock some pretty serious shade and I personally don't see any reason to do so. I'm sure each is well aware of their differences. So this obvious snubbing, especially in a diplomatic situation is not needed. Sarek could have kept things civil and kept their personal dispute a private matter between themselves. But he doesn't and both Kirk and Mccoy can sense something is off. Perhaps im nitpicking but Sarek isnt being very logical. Spock was.

A race that lives by logic, here demonstrates emotion is at work, just guised as if it's not. Spock chose Starfleet as the best place to fit in where there are various races. Even close friends and professional colleagues don't necessarily tell each other everything. @danbasta36776 жыл бұрын
Cherl, Agree with your written comment to a certain extent. Spock, being unemotional and trained to not show emotions, pretty much wasen't really surprized thst T Pau officated at Spock's almost wedding to T Pring. The Captain, speaking to Dr. McCoy, as the good doctor, Bones, do you know who that is? When McCoy shook his head no, the Captain said, that's TPau, the only one who turned down a seat in the Federation council. Spock never mentioned his fsmily was that important, which calls to mind that it is a possibility that TPau might be related to Spock, this is how i precieved it. Maybe wrong, however, this how i took it, considering that Mr. Spock says and relates very, very little about his family, how the Vulcans and the Romulans who were once Vulcans who rejected Surik's teaching of pure logic and the despensing of emotions, or any other aspects of Vulcan society or Vulcan ancestory, or family members, etc. At any rate, this is another real, fine exsmple of the Original Star Trek Series that, simply put, beats the pants off of that next generation stuff and whatever followed it. I’m surprised that Kirk didn’t put 2 and 2 together and realize that Sarek and Amanda were Spock’s parents. I mean, Kirk knew that Spock was half Vulcan and half human, and there can’t have been that many inter species marriages with Vulcans, especially with humans.

wasnt there a time when Spock told (nurse chapel maybe?) that his last name was almost unpronounceable by humans? it is entirely likely Sarek is just listed as Sarek on most documents, and Spock is just listed as Spock on most documents, for ease of the humancentric federation.

Sarek is my fave character, and I am currently reading a novel bout him. I was looking earlier tonight to see which of the ST shows have Vulcans in the main cast. Only TOS, ENT, SNW, & VOY. This got me thinking that the predominant species in any show is human. Virtually all captains are human. What if they did a ST show that did not have humans? Are Federation vessels required to have humans on them?

Where is the logic in not having his son do the tour? Not returning Spock's salute while returning McCoy's? While he says "prefer", that is just a euphemism for "I can't stand Spock". Which irrational thought of Sarek's about some past or present event(s) is causing this irrational emotion which is causing this irrational response? Certainly not logic. This is Star Trek's straw man against logic. Logic does not tell us to be unemotional - that would suppress joy. It shows us how to dampen painful, self-defeating emotions which are not cause by logic, but by irrational beliefs and thoughts. If you want to learn how to control self-defeating emotions and pain so you can blossom and have more joy, study rational psychotherapy, REBT, originated by Dr Albert Ellis, and its spinoff, CBT, originated by Dr Aaron Beck and popularized by Dr David Burns.

That's not really enough of an answer. Kirk is his CO and would have access to Spock's service records. At that, Bones might, too, as the ship's CMO.

Kirk would know that Vulcans are very private about their personal lives; he had no idea before Amok Time just how high were Spock's connections. He probably only knew of his impressive Vulcan Science Academy and Starfleet records.

Sarek was being a total rude and disrespectful jerk to Spock. I see no reason for his crummy behavior to his own son. I know their background, but Sarek is being unreasonable and dare I say..... illogical! Amanda ought to give Sarek a little schooling about his behavior towards his own son. I sure would love to. Spock doesn't deserve that crap from him. Spock is a good man and deserves much more respect. He struggles with his human side everyday ans Sarek is blind to this. Jerk.

SpiritBear12 Sarek , as a Vulcan repressed his emotions but more so towards his son. It is not until the TNG era that we realize that he had bottled up all his feelings for over a 100 years, and that he was really proud of his son to the point of almost breaking Picard down (they had mind melded). Sarek was atypical for Vulcans in that he chose his own mate and for qualities Vulcans normally did not value. Hence he overcompensated when dealing with his son to the point of barely acknowledging him outwardly. it didnt help that Spock and Sarek never did the fal-tor-pan family melding to transfer these feelings discreetly as Vulcans do.

SpiritBear12 could it be, Sarek acts this way partially because he is struggling with his illness? If you watch, as he exits the shuttle, he doesn't handle the steps easily as a healthy Vulcan could. Perhaps he just needs to be out of there and can't deal with holding back his feelings like someone might seem rude who had to get to the bathroom right away.
@radiantsun7 жыл бұрын
now that we have star trek discovery set in the prime timeline, sarek was probably holding back his emotions bc sarek chose Spock to be in the Vulcan science academy when given the choice between Spock and Michael Burnham.... And now we see Spock in starfleet so,,,, deduce what you can from that~

OK, but wouldn't it have been "logical" for the both of them to do this fal-tor-pan thing so that neither one of them have to live day by day with this hurt?

OK. Vulcans in general and Spock in particular do not like to talk about their private lives, but maybe Spock could have given Kirk a heads-up: the ambassador is my father and (maybe) he is not so happy I serve in Starfleet. After all, it would come up soon or later.
@northernstudioworks3 ай бұрын
Even though this presents a plot hole it still is a good episode. Hard to believe that given Spock's history that no one in Starfleet or even the Commanding Officers he served with would have any record of who Sarek and Amanda were in relation to Spock prior to this meeting, especially given who Sarek is.
@Irrelevant4026 жыл бұрын
Is there a reason Kirk didn't return the salute back to Sarek? Was it a case of Kirk being arrogant or is there a rule saying that it is okay not to return a Vulcan salute if you're non-Vulcan? So I wondered if it wasn't a big deal that Bones didn't return it either. Though Sarek ignoring Spock's salute is clearly a big deal from framing even before you know their relation.
@KaputOtter6 жыл бұрын
I'm trying to remember where it was exactly. Some Enterprise episode. An ep that retrofitted this idea of, when you meet the Vulcan visitor, do not offer your hand for a handshake. I think most canon humans are just so accustomed to using the handshake that they'd rather refrain altogether then try the Vulcan salute, out of politeness. That and what the other reply said!
@danbasta36776 жыл бұрын
@Ciaran Wilkinson The Vulcsn salute, is in reality a Jewish hand gesture in a religeous ceremony. Now being the fsct that Bill Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and Mark Leonard are all of part Jewish decent, should have been easy and or something that maybe the Captain wasen't really required to do. It's debatable. Bill and Leonard are part Ukrainian, Mark is part Russian.
@lunad275 жыл бұрын
@@danbasta3677 I don't think everyone can position their hand properly for the salute (I can't do it with my right hand, and just barely can with the left). Maybe it's true Shatner couldn't
@lnfreeman4 жыл бұрын
@@danbasta3677 not every Jewish person spends their time doing that with their hand lol. Nimoy said he only saw it in an orthodox ritual the congregation isn't even supposed to watch. Nimoy and Lenard practiced it. I'll bet Shatner either didn't bother or wasn't able to get it right in time for filming. The actress who played T'Pau had to have her fingers taped to do it in Amok Time.
