I love the change in Kirk's tone at 1:19, when the Genesis torpedo is beamed away. Before that, Kirk is angry but controlled, goading Khan in an attempt to produce an emotional response. After that, he's off-balance and truly worried. He knows too much about what Genesis can do.

Eh, I think all Starfleet officers know what a starship could do to a planet (General Order 4) as well as why there's a prime directive (probably a civilization destroyed itself when Earthers or others interfered), even if we as the audience don't know the details. I think that's why in TOS they were able to resist Khan, and why the scientists would rather die than cooperate.

@@kenetickups6146 Was just thinking that. Boy, looking at what didn't make the plot of Star Trek: The Motion Picture makes me think they didn't know what to do with the franchise. What happened to D.C. Fontana and the original writers? Even some of the animated series episodes were pretty good. This was like "Balance of Terror." Too bad they didn't have something like "A Taste of Armageddon." Or better yet, have something to say about current events of the 1970s and '80s like crime and punishment, refugees and illegal immigration, and democracy vs totalitarianism (now fascism). They did talk about species extinction in Star Trek IV, but it was a cop-out to take the scientist with them. Although some say that maybe the movie's attention and success saved the whales when the environmentalists couldn't.

He IS James T. Kirk. I recommend you check out his chops in the original series episodes "Balance of Terror", "The Naked Time", and "City on the Edge of Forever". What many people don’t realize is that Kirk’s yell is an act, another trick he pulls on Khan. Kirk knows that Spock and the Enterprise will be back in 2 hours, he wants Khan to think he has severely crippled Enterprise and that repairs will take TWO DAYS per the overheard radio damage report. Thus, Kirk expresses his anger in a controlled fashion; the outburst serves a purpose.

The performances from William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy were both brilliant, Khan was a great Star Trek villain, and the scene where Kirk yells Khan was one of the best scenes of the film. Many great lines in this scene which i don't need to repeat as they're well immortalized.. but one thing that draws you the most into the scene is the sheer dejection and palpable horror that Montalban conveys with his bare facial expressions as Khan finds out that Kirk is still alive! It utterly captivates you as a viewer and sucks you into Khan's inner emotional turmoil before he then utters those immortal lines of vengeance to his old enemy. The way Montalban is able to convey Khan's inner emotions is why Khan's character was so believable and had such a presence on the screen - and thus by many is considered to be the only ever equal enemy to Kirk on the screen. What a magnificent actor! From 0:30 .

I discovered Star Trek through the reboot series. Honestly, it's really good and I still like it, but after seeing this movie I finally understood why the old fans were disappointed. The original Khan is absolutely *terrifying*, and Benedict Cumberbatch might be an impressive villain, but he does not compare to the real deal. Every single scene with Khan is chilling, every line delivered perfectly, every facial expression on point. It feels like watching a Shakesperean play.

Shakespeare was 'The Undiscovered Country'. 'Wrath of Khan' was Melville. But you're on point. "They" (you know, 'them'?) actually translated Shakespeare into Klingon. That's taking nerd status to 11.

One of the things I love about this movie is that Nicholas Meyer, with a lot of difficult initial interactions with Shatner, managed to get Shatner to radically alter the characterization of Kirk, to something almost method like. You can feel Kirk’s seething rage in the sarcastic delivery of “you keep missing the target”, which makes it an incredible line in a scene full of extraordinarily great dialog (written by Meyer). The result is Shatner’s performance is really outstanding and genuinely nuanced in a way we’d never seen before. Without this change the movie, with Kirk as the immovable object to Khan’s unstoppable force, wouldn’t have worked.

The look on Khan's face when he heard Admiral Kirk's voice after another failed attempt on his life is priceless. Khan didn't even have the courage to beam down to inside the planetoid to get Kirk face to face despite his genetically engineered strength.

The best villains would be heroes in another story. Khan has legitimate reasons to hate Kirk. He also means every word of "my old friend" because he feels genuine kinship with and respect for Kirk and his abilities and Kirk clearly did not. Complexity in villains, love to see it.

People talk about Shatner's acting, but I think it was spot on here. From the moment he shot the creature (that came out of Chekov's ear), watch. First, he has a look of disgust towards vermin, then it subtly deepens for the REAL villain, Khan! Notice this before he reaches the communicator to talk to him

Which was done more out of necessity than a plot device. Madelyn Rhue was still alive in real life, but was in ill health and was unable to reprise the role. So they had to write her out of the story.

But a solid plot device it was. When Khan was last seen... he was being deposited on a thriving planet with a woman he considered his wife. 15 years later... the former lieutenant is dead, half of his followers are dead, and the planet is basically not really able to sustain live. He blames Kirk for never coming back. Believing if Kirk had... his beloved wife might still be alive.

Two great actors. Montalban was such a class act and an amazing talent. Did you know that Ricardo Montalban was a gymnast, like Burt Lancaster? He stayed in amazing physical shape well into his sixties, until he became wheelchair bound. Did you know that Ricardo Montalban was injured on the set of a movie way back in 1951 by being thrown from a horse and having his back trampled by another horse? Did you know that this injury caused him excruciating pain for the rest of his life, in spite of which he kept up a punishing physical exercise regimen to stay in shape, and when he sought surgical treatment for the pain 40 years later, it left him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life? Pause this clip at 2:07, and regard the tortured expression on Shatner's face. Then tell me William Shatner was a "ham" who "couldn't act".

It's fun to finally see this iconic moment I've been hearing about since I was a kid :) . Never really got into the modern trek films by JJ Abrhams. I liked the first one fine but never seen it more than twice and the second one I haven't seen since seeing it when it came out. You just can't beat the classics, man. The writing, acting, perfect casting is unbeatable. Replacing Kirk, Spock and Khan is like replacing Picard, Worf and Data: Get outta here!
