Many great lines in this scene which i don't need to repeat as they're well immortalized.. but one thing that draws you the most into the scene is the sheer dejection and palpable horror that Montalban conveys with his bare facial expressions as Khan finds out that Kirk is still alive! It utterly captivates you as a viewer and sucks you into Khan's inner emotional turmoil before he then utters those immortal lines of vengeance to his old enemy. The way Montalban is able to convey Khan's inner emotions is why Khan's character was so believable and had such a presence on the screen - and thus by many is considered to be the only ever equal enemy to Kirk on the screen. What a magnificent actor! From 0:30 .

One of the things I love about this movie is that Nicholas Meyer, with a lot of difficult initial interactions with Shatner, managed to get Shatner to radically alter the characterization of Kirk, to something almost method like. You can feel Kirk’s seething rage in the sarcastic delivery of “you keep missing the target”, which makes it an incredible line in a scene full of extraordinarily great dialog (written by Meyer). The result is Shatner’s performance is really outstanding and genuinely nuanced in a way we’d never seen before. Without this change the movie, with Kirk as the immovable object to Khan’s unstoppable force, wouldn’t have worked.

Which was done more out of necessity than a plot device. Madelyn Rhue was still alive in real life, but was in ill health and was unable to reprise the role. So they had to write her out of the story.

But a solid plot device it was. When Khan was last seen... he was being deposited on a thriving planet with a woman he considered his wife. 15 years later... the former lieutenant is dead, half of his followers are dead, and the planet is basically not really able to sustain live. He blames Kirk for never coming back. Believing if Kirk had... his beloved wife might still be alive.

Two great actors. Montalban was such a class act and an amazing talent. Did you know that Ricardo Montalban was a gymnast, like Burt Lancaster? He stayed in amazing physical shape well into his sixties, until he became wheelchair bound. Did you know that Ricardo Montalban was injured on the set of a movie way back in 1951 by being thrown from a horse and having his back trampled by another horse? Did you know that this injury caused him excruciating pain for the rest of his life, in spite of which he kept up a punishing physical exercise regimen to stay in shape, and when he sought surgical treatment for the pain 40 years later, it left him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life? Pause this clip at 2:07, and regard the tortured expression on Shatner's face. Then tell me William Shatner was a "ham" who "couldn't act".

The crazy thing about the Augments like Khan and his crew is that even being from the 20th century, they took a 23rd century Starship and ran it like they were born to it... Only Kirk and crew experience with new blood from trainees saved them from losing completely. Made a tv episode into a classic just cause u know what's coming...

It's fun to finally see this iconic moment I've been hearing about since I was a kid :) . Never really got into the modern trek films by JJ Abrhams. I liked the first one fine but never seen it more than twice and the second one I haven't seen since seeing it when it came out. You just can't beat the classics, man. The writing, acting, perfect casting is unbeatable. Replacing Kirk, Spock and Khan is like replacing Picard, Worf and Data: Get outta here!

Man, you don't get guys who act like this anymore. It's so theatrical and campy but so perfectly judged at the same time. I just love this scene and I'm not eve a Trek fan. The delivery by Ricardo is just great - you enjoy his evilness so much. Well, I guess Shatner didn't.

I've never noticed this until today. If you play 1:13 at .25 speed, you can see Kirstie Alley deliberately drops out of shot behind William Shatner because she knows she has the biggest stupid grin on her face; she's obviously trying not to laugh.
