CLIP DESCRIPTION:
In his final moments, Khan (Ricardo Montalban) attempts to destroy Kirk (William Shatner).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is fondly regarded as being the closest in spirit to the 1966-69 TV series that spawned it. Admiral Kirk (William Shatner) escapes the tedium of a desk job to join Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (DeForest Kelley) on another space mission. While boldly going where no man etc. etc., Kirk crosses the path of his old enemy Khan (Ricardo Montalban), who as any die-hard Trekker can tell you, was the chief antagonist in the 1966 Trek TV episode "Space Seed." Leading a crew of near-savage space prisoners, Khan insinuates himself into the Genesis Project, which is designed to introduce living organisms on long-dead planets. Intending to harness this program for his own despotic purposes, Khan engages in battle with the Enterprise crew.

And the really lovely part of it that - in line with Mr Montalban's contention that villains do villainous things for what they see as the right reasons - Khan dies believing that he genuinely succeeded and has therefore earned his revenge for his fallen people. He has no idea that Kirk and co survive and that's great, because it means everyone sort of gets what they want and there are no losers, sort of. - Poor Spock. He'll be back.

What makes Khan a bad guy? That's why I love this Movie anyways. I don't think of this character as "a bad guy"(when I think about it.) It's like the Empire Strikes Back. I love that Movie because the Empire is awesome and Vader really is a guy you can relate to. Who wouldn't want to "rule an entire Galaxy"? All Khan wanted was some payback. And who can't identify with that? It's not like he was fired from his job. The guy and his wife, family, followers etc were left for dead. I wish Hollywood would do more of these types of Movies. All I have is How It Should Have Ended HISHE at the moment..

I am now retired US Military, USMC/USN. Currently been probably over-volunteering for positive Community ORG.s/501C3's, and attempting to tackle, figure out major NEG issues, such as Santa Fe, New Mexico's most Atypical socio-economic grouping, and other major aspects compounding the major housing shortage/crisis here, for at least 15 years. Need a "KHAN" to assist W/their beyond genius IQ! LOL But then i would just get stabbed in the back, or similar Shakespearean/High Italian Operatic, type tragedy ending! LOL Cheers! -t.c.

Bob Robertson and destroyed Kirk emotionally, thrice with the deaths of Spock and his son David and the destruction of the Enterprise. True, the Klingons did the deed in David's case and Kirk finished the Enterprise off himself, but if Khan never escaped and sought his revenge, none of it would likely have happened. Khan may have lost the battles and largely the war but the effects he left were long lasting, even well after his death. The Federation became so afraid of another Khan that they banned all genetic engineering to the point of ostracism and in some cases imprisonment, in the case of Dr. Bashir's parents and Dr. Bashir himself being nearly cashiered out of Starfleet. If the Federation could get away imposing capital punishment for genetic engineering, they would.

That's the second ambiguous point in the direction of this film. The first is when Khan's eldest son Joachim is dying in Khan's arms, b/c Khan screwed the pooch tactically in the Mutara Nebula fight. Joachim's last words to his father are, "Yours...is a superior..." He then dies, and you never know whether he meant it ironically or not.

I made this comment on a video yesterday about Spy Kids 3D: Game Over, but his role as Khan is a direct contrast with his role as Grandpa in the Spy Kids movies. Both men were hurt in some way, but one sought out his nemesis to exact revenge, losing his life in the process, while the other sought out his nemesis to forgive them, likely dying peacefully of old age. It would frankly be interesting to put Khan and Grandpa into the same room and have them discuss their opposing philosophies on life, and whether it is better to forgive or to seek revenge.

They need to release that version this year or next year to celebrate it's 35 anniversary. The 2002 Directors cut is just a PG version of the 1985 ABC tv version. I call that the uncomplete cut. Meyer or fans may argue that a 129 min. version is too long.

I seen this movie when it was first released. I really believed Spock was dead never to come back but wasn't sure. What suspense.

As we harkin back to Ricardo Maltalban, I wonder if his command chair was fitted with "Fine Corinthian Leather?" Those old enough will get the reference. 😂

Really understand Khans last words. He is being dragged to perdition, and his loathing for his foe is so great he relinquished his final moments and soul to fire one last shot at his nemesis! Powerful.

Brilliantly crafted scene. The tension is maintained even as the Enterprise flees: it remains only just ahead of the expanding Genesis wavefront.

I swear I remember Khan SEEING the Enterprise escape (on the Reliant's fuzzy barely-working view screen) and then he yells "NOOOO!!!" or something like that. Makes for a better ending if he knows Kirk got a way and he just killed himself for nothing. Not sure why I remember it this way, maybe it's the Mandella Effect or something! lol
