This sounds like the Goiania accident that occurred in Brazil in 1987. A radio therapy device was improperly discarded and local scrap scavengers found it at the town dump. What makes no sense is that Data clearly still has access to an extensive vocabulary, using terms that even the aliens are not familiar with, meaning that he has a built in dictionary with obscure terms in there and understands their definition. Therefor since he didn't have to learn language from scratch, it means that the word "radioactive" should too be in his vocabulary and he would know what it means. This was a flaw in the writing, as they should have made him both illiterate and mute, and required to learn their language, grammar, and words from their books and interactions, which would then explain why "radioactive" had no meaning to him due to his memory wipe.

There are various proposals for storing radioactive waste. Part of the discussion has been about how to label it. Since it can be hazardous for thousands of years, there is concern about the possibility of the waste being discovered by people who will be unfamiliar with 21st century languages. One proposal had a sequence of drawings, showing someone opening the container and dying. One of the objections was people in the future might read it backwards, and think the primitive people who made the drawing thought they had a substance that could restore life.

This episode is brillant, not only do we see data adapt to his given situation flawlessly, despite his memory loss, but see the enterprise bridge at night. The way Data manages to not only deduce and solve the problem he helped bring about, but do so in a way which would not have any disruptions to the growth of the world.

Well, yeah. Data didn't have access to the Enterprise's medical equipment so he had to make do with what he could get in the village. And did a very good job of it even though he's not a doctor. I doubt that Crusher could have done better.

He does. He zooms in by moving his head closer to the object. Clever robot that one.

From what we've seen, his optical ability isn't that much impressive. He seems to only be able to see the same waves as humans do, nothing more. Only key difference is that his visual refresh rate detection is significantly higher, like he can capture millions of frames per second or something since he was able to see motion advancing when time had slowed down so much that it would take hours for a warp core breach; he could see the explosion progressing.

Fun fact: 500x larger means 500x darker. She must have very sensitive eyes to see anything.

That is the strangest looking microscope I've ever seen. Pretty sure six convex lenses in a row would just create a mess.
@pwnmeisterage Жыл бұрын
It resembles the earliest microscopes - "fleaglasses" or "aquatic microscopes" - used by naturalists. They usually had two or three lenses along with a variety of spares for other magnification modes. Essentially the same design as a modern compound microscope, in principle, importantly lacking tubes around the lenses. I'm guessing the one in this scene is a functional antique (or replica). But they've equipped all the lenses and fixtures onto it at once - a mess which wouldn't work at all - just because it looks more impressive and sophisticated.
