I never watch horror, so I don’t notice any cliches of the genre. I find these types of episodes pleasantly creepy. The rem sleep concept is a good one. I had an illness years ago that messed up my rem sleep, and it was extremely disorienting. It got to the point I couldn’t tell if I was dreaming or awake. I did not like it. I can’t watch the voyager episode Waking Moments because of it.

This episode, “Identity Crisis”, and “Schisms” are my favorite Trek horror episodes. Though, since the crew seems to run into these hallucination or mental instability problems every season, you’d think they’d have an alphanumeric procedure down by now: 1. Use the Buddy System. Know who your designated buddy is. 2. Break out the cryogenic chambers, and rotate the crew to reduce prolonged effects as long as possible. 3. When propulsion systems fail and a derelict ship is nearby, use the tractor beam to push away from the ship (Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion). Once the Enterprise is safe, use probes or other equipment isolated from the ship to conduct rescue or research operations.

I like identity crisis a lot too. It’s weird. Those two episodes both have a scene where they use tech to slowly figure out the clues. That’s my favourite part.

The morgue scene in this episode scared the crap out of me and I applaud crusher for not freaking out also although they allow drinking on the starship there is no alcohol in it to make them drunk it’s synthetic alcohol

I would give it a solid B but I guess that's mainly because I love derelict ship mystery plots plus the horror atmosphere was also well made (especially the morgue scene, yikes!)

You guys have something genuinely funny going on here. Most "nostalgia critics" rely on over the top emotional outbursts about silly shit to bring the "comedy". You guys just sound like the bored nerdy kids at the back of the classroom. More of the MSTK delivery. Love it.

This review is spot on. This episode was on the other day and I was thinking the same thing you guys said, especially about Guinan and why other aliens on the ship couldn't have dealt with this.

Gotta love how in the Star Trek sitcom thing, the shots of the characters get progressively darker and darker with worf trying to stab himself at the end.
@eddstarr21853 жыл бұрын
I like this episode, yet your observations ring true. The base plot of the Enterprise crew being contacted telepathically by an alien crew in trouble is sound. But the writers added unnecessary "drama" with murder and suicide, plus the spatial anomaly trap. When a good plot is saddled with embellishments it hints that the creators of the show don't trust the audience to respond to anything except the avoidance of death.

Why the aliens thought that a really vague dream would be enough to get out of their jam is anyone's guess.
@chrisbullard59013 жыл бұрын
It’s not necessarily that they’re deliberately making it vague. If you think about the number of telepathic species the Federation runs into that don’t think in the same analogous approach the Betazoids are trained to use (see “Tin Man”, and “Dark Page”), the aliens could be thinking “Hydrogen, send hydrogen to twin star system now!” However, it’s received and translated subconsciously in Troi’s mind as a vague dream, because what they’re transmitting isn’t easily understood. It’s like trying to make sense of ASCII code sent in hexadecimal form, when you’re receiving machine understands only binary machine code. The receiving machine isn’t compatible, and can only translate fragments of the hex code that’s in ones and zeroes.

Picard screaming in the turbo lift reminds me of Bruce Campbell’s performance in some of the Rvil Dead/Army of Darkness movies.
@September2004 Жыл бұрын
A couple of other weaknesses I noticed: * No one mentions that Guinan seems unaffected as well. She ends up not doing anything more than stay at Ten Forward. * No one thinks to follow up with the aliens or contacting them. * Troi takes so long to say ‘Now’. * Picard doesn’t mention to Crusher and Troi that he had just heard his door ringing but no one was there. Others that I’ve read that makes sense: * Tori’s clothing when she wakes up from her first nightmare.

Yeah I noticed that too, it was pretty bad. I think what made it really noticeable for me was the ADR, her voiced didn't match her facial expressions so it came across as super weird.

C-? You guys are weird. This episode is one of my favs--it's creepy, Troi actually gets to do something, Data is boss, even Crusher plays an important role here as a doctor. Fun, creative, even a little scary. I don't remember many ST:TNG episodes from when I was a kid, but this one and "The Best of Both Worlds" always stood out.
@RobertTLongway2 жыл бұрын
I like how Data literally tells her the only thing you need to tell them is “Now” and she is given a 2 minute time limit when she’s put to sleep but instead of just yelling out ‘Now, Do it now!’ She keeps screaming about “I have to find you! To tell you!”

Agree about how the motives and resolution were weak. I think it would have been interesting if the aliens were simply trying to make friendly contact telepathically, but their minds were so alien that anyone who came into contact with them started going insane. Like some unintentional Lovecraft.

So yet again your review made me watch this episode on good 'ol netflixy, and when it got to Beverley and Troi's door bell joke, it made me think, what if the Captain was off in the hollowdeck or somewhere else on the ship, and they just think he is in the ready room, would the knock on the door and ring the bell for hours before thinking, "umm he aint there"

It's likely that the crew weren't actually "drinking" as most drinks of the time are replicated/made with synthahol, a chemical variant of alcohol. It has the same taste and smell as real alcohol to most individuals, but none of the deleterious effects. Not sure if that had been touched upon by this point in the show though.

how is Guinan's gun scene comedic?? maybe you were just trying to be funny? but it seems like you genuinely believe it was supposed to be a comedic part of the scene which honestly is a pretty lame take! Was it a corny one-liner? sure was.. but more indicative of 80's culture and NOT purposeful comedic relief!
