One last point. Captain Fraser was disturbingly unsurprised that a Klingon (Woorf) was on the bridge of the Enterprise, given that 80 years before, they were at war with them.

My thought was. He should know what the Enterprise looks like and know it's under command of Captain Kirk. So why he admits he doesn't recognize the ships design. Unless he was playing dumb on purpose until he figured out what was going on. I do believe that they were unaware of thier jump through time though.

The explanation of sending a message through the dekyon field was set up ahead of time with Geordi's visor picking up echoes in the dekyon field, so it didn't just come out of nowhere. Yes, it's technobabble, but so is the time loop, and having mentioned the field's ability to transfer information at a very low resolution earlier in the episode means it's established technobabble by the time it becomes pivotal, so I don't see that as an issue.

@@Mr_Yarn i think it depends a LOT on how you approach this series. cause sure by modern standards, there is a lot to nitpick. by the standards of the time, when it's good it's REALLY good. but a lot of their criticisms have to do with how TV was produced back in the day (serialized with very little continuous storytelling). This was before shows like Sopranos brought a new level of "believability" to the storytelling. Even when it's goofy or dumb, i still find most of TNG to be endearing.

So here's the problem I always had with this episode... They knew that the deja vu and voices and stuff only were happening because they had been stuck in the loop, that feeling had been building up over and over... So logically... they wouldn't have known about the loop the first time they went through it because they wouldn't have had that information because it wouldn't have existed in the very first loop... The very knowledge of knowing that you're in the loop should have been reason enough to try to change course or stop, and they didn't even bother to try it..(Off handendly remarking that it might be the action that causes the loop but it CAN'T have been because you wouldn't have changed course in the first loop.)

Why would they only use one of the suggested solutions to avoid the collision? What if they used the tractor beam AND decompress the shuttle bay? Using the tractor beam doesn't disable the shuttle bay door and decompressing the shuttle bay doesn't disable the tractor beam. This is silly. After watching this episode, I thought years later, this would have made wonderful plot twist, if Data had followed Riker's suggestion, decompressed the shuttle bay and the collision still happened. The show would have dragged on for another cycle or so, until they used both solutions together.

Simplest solution would be to SEND A PROBE back to Starfleet as soon as you discover a predestination paradox. Why would you try to sort it out yourselves when you're clearly looping already. You have no idea if the realization is also part of the loop. Meanwhile Starfleet has a literal division dedicated to resolving Temporal anomalies. Probe reaches them, they come out, they save the Enterprise. The arrogance of the TNG crew gets them into life or death situations way more often than they would encounter them if they just stowed their egos and actually followed protocols.

My problem with this episode is that whatever happened, they would have gotten out of the loop anyway. With each iteration, they remembered a little bit more. So repeat that often enough and eventually, they can avoid the crash. They don't actually need to send any message at all. Also, there was no guarantee that Riker's solution would work. As to why Frasier did not experience deja vu, my take is that people from 80 years ago were too simple, not evolved enough to pick up on this. Maybe the Federation DID experiment with genetic modification after all, even though genetic modification was supposed to have been outlawed. But maybe Section 31 had something to do with it.

But Frasier's ship was only caught in the loop for the same amount of cycles as the Enterprise-D, AND had been caught in some sort of time-wormhole, so they likely only experienced five-or-ten minutes repeated seventeen or eighteen times, whereas the Enterprise experiences the loop for a far longer period each loop.

Watch ti again..Closely....They DID use a different take every time..Listen closely to their voices..In one loop they sound desperate..The next loop their voice sounds like it's routine..Particularly when they are about to explode..Sometimes Data says "Ejection Systems are offline".. other times times he says "Ejector Systems are offline"

When they first discovered they were trapped in a time loop, why did they not immediately verify the correct present date? They stupidly waited until the end of the episode. Even if they had zero dejavu, the difference in date could have acted as the seed in a random number/event generator that would have, by itself, eventually prevented the collision and ended the episode.

Couldnt they have resolved this by simply sending a distress signal to starfleet explaining whats happening? Geordi points out they are the ones stuck, but outside the phenomena time still moves forward

If Data could type a message emphasizing "3" to himself that fast, why couldn't he tell the controls in front of him to do it Riker's way?

Because plot. lol. If we were being accurate, data could run the whole ship, on his own, all the time. Hell, could probably run a whole fleet of ships. And he sure as hell would never need to ask what some archaic phrase means, when he could have literally instantaneous recall of all known facts, and the context about those facts.

Love the funny comments on the poker cheating at the end! Especially about Warf! Hilarious! I think you're grades are spot on and the reasons why. I agree, I enjoyed the episode, but the ending was bland. C+.

man i liked this episode, i would grade it A. Maybe nostalgia is giving it a big ups, but think about all the things you've seen that were boring to watch and unmemorable, this episode is very memorable and fun.

What always bugged me was that they actually brought up the obvious solution of just changing course. And it's shot down with the rationalization of 'maybe changing course is why we get killed'. Uhm. If changing course is what gets you killed, then you wouldn't be in the loop, because you would have never felt compelled to change course in the first place. You would have just sailed on by the first time and nothing would have happened.

To further add to the confusion and nonsensical thought process of this episode, I would like to ask this question: WHAT the hell was the other ship doing in the causality loop for the other 29,183 days that it was stuck in there prior to the Enterprise's arrival, allowing it to be crashed into to reset the loop? Wouldn't the arrival of the Enterprise to this area simply change the loop for the USS Bozeman, essentially freeing only them, and now leaving the Enterprise to be caught up for a longer undetermined duration?
@thewewguy8t88
@thewewguy8t88 2 жыл бұрын
My theory is from thier point if view the time loop only started once they encountered the enterprise and because the enterprise blew up it reset that moment so really the other ship had 2-3 minutes to react to everything going on and had been experiencing it for only so long as the enterprise did.

I also interpreted the "highly localized distortion in the space-time continuum" as being a time rift which sent the Bozeman 80 years into the future (similar to the one that the Enterprise-C went through). Before the Enterprise exploded for the first time, there would have been nothing to cause a time loop for the Bozeman. And in those last few minutes of the time loop that involved them, the crew of the Bozeman was probably too freaked out about being on a collision course with the Enterprise to worry about having a deja vu :P.

@@jelmerterburg3588 clearly these time distortions are a bit more common then I thought maybe that's what the almonly is in discovery lol

I _think_ because they are going back in time, the rest of the universe doesn't notice how many "resets" have occurred. Unless it's a local time reset which...aw, screw it. 😉 😜

The weekly poker game was riker's idea, and it took a while for him to get enough players in a post scarcity utopia. Crusher (who has a tricorder under the table), giordi, troy and data agreed to play only because they are so tired of riker's arrogance. Warf is a red herring who they let win every once in a while. Riker had never walked away with the pot in the seven years they played and never caught on to the ruse, the ass.

I have thoughts ... Love both this review and this episode. And, yes, it makes zero sense: Where tf was Guinan? It's been established repeatedly that she can sense when these kinda reality-distortion shenanigans are happening ... How is their chronometer able to tell that it's been 17 days!? If they're caught in a temporal loop, it would be reset -- as u said, it's not like they're doing things repeatedly; they're traversing the same portion of time. 100% that's not how clocks work, even fancy Trek-b.s. inverse-tachyon plasma-escapement clocks with wave-guide-synchronised tourbillons. And, you bet your sweet ass Troi is cheating at poker -- it's approximately the only useful thing her otherwise-pointless skills let her do!
