This scene encapsulates why I hold TNG as my favorite star trek show. Conflicting cultures and ideologies between friends or colleagues. Debate of ethics, respect and Honor. Klingon respect bluntness in friendship and I feel Riker was a true friend trying to get Worf to fight for his life. I also understand Worf too, Doctor Toby Russell was the hero of that episode to me, regardless of how antagonistic Beverly Crusher was.

the irony is that everyone is getting on the Federation hypocrisy spoken here ... but Worf really was the one being the hypocrite. Riker was correct .... Worf did not want to ask his young son to hand him that blade, watch as he impaled himself with said blade, remove said blade from his father's dead body, and wipe the blood off with his sleeve. Worf DID NOT want Alexander to go through that, after having JUST seen his mother's broken body on that same ship maybe a year prior. but it WAS his place, by the letter of the tradition.

Yeah they tended to write Picard in for addressing the moral dilemmas but this was a really good scene for Riker. He got to say his peace without the episode undermining him over it and Worf got to sit through it without getting hit by any more falling boxes.

While I can understand why this issue would be a bit polarizing, I have to say I love Riker here- excellent dialogue, and I think more fitting for the circumstance than Picard's generally more inspirational/aspirational speeches. Showing respect for his culture but making it clear he will not let Worf do this with no resistance. And the subtle (to a degree) insinuation that this is a cowardly act, without saying so directly in a fashion that would cut Worf deeply. And I think its important to bear in mind, that Riker isn't stopping him from doing anything- he doesn't contest his right to end his life, just makes sure he'll pay the price for it and not shield himself from his son's grief, that he'll have to confront that prior to committing suicide.

And then you remember that TNG also had episodes like The Child, Code of Honor, Justice & Shades of Grey and you come to realize that the first couple of seasons in every Star Trek Series (with the exception of TOS) is subpar at best and outright terrible at worst. For the record I'm NOT defending Discovery or Picard (both have a LOT of issues) I'm just saying that while there were good and even great episodes there was also a lot of crappy ones too. I'm only bringing this up because I've seen a lot of comments going on about how bad the new trek series are and how the older series were so much better forgetting that TNG's first season is one of the worst seasons in ST History and even TOS had it's questionable episodes (I mean has anyone ever seen Turnabout Intruder?) Sorry for going on like that it's just been a rough day.

The events of this episode had a major part in helping Worf become the kind of Klingon he is during DS9, one of many. He honors Klingon tradition, but recognizing his deep unwillingness to be rigid makes him glorious and it’s potentially inspiring. Riker realizes that Worf wanting this is actually him being selfish and hypocritical. If he was really like his people, he wouldn’t even consider Alexander’s youth as a factor, but he does, because Worf is not like other Klingons, in a good way. In the end, he ultimately decides to fight for his life over ending what’s traditionally considered a disgraceful state, so his friends don’t need to be drag into his suffering and his family can grow under his witness as the Son of Mogh and a Klingon. It’s moments like these and his experiences as a Starfleet Officer and a Klingon far from a home where honor is still fickle, with his primary exposure being their legends, that shape Worf into the ultimate Klingon.

Paramount/CBS owns the legal rights, Rod, as his mother and father before him sign off on it. I'd completely agree with Worf here, if it weren't for his son's existence. Your life belongs to you, it is yours to say what you want to do with it, even up to and including suicide. However, the moment you have a child, someone who looks up to you for love and guidance, your life is no longer your own. It is, at least partially, theirs now. You owe it to them. It is theirs by birthright. To rip something like that from the life of a child who has grown to love and care for you. You're not just killing yourself. You're killing a part of them too. The part of yourself that you put inside of them as you nurtured and guided them. Maybe once they've reached adulthood things might change, honestly I haven't taken the time to put thought into it, but while your actions still have direct absolute control over them, suicide ceases to be a morally acceptable option.

Wow, I hadn't thought about Alexander at all. I was always angry at Riker for not helping a true friend. I couldn't agree more with Worf, I really felt they should have helped him with what he wanted more than ever, but I had completely forgotten about the kid. @@edwardhamham2452 Riker would want to be pretty sure of that! Worf has considerable upper body strength and can be rather stubborn. Perhaps however he can only take his own life and die as an honorable Klingon he he acts in accordance with the ritual: his son would have to bring him the blade.

As someone who is a quadriplegic, can't move or feel anything below the very top of my shoulders (I use a mouth operated controller by the name of Quadstick and sometimes a voice to text program called Dragon speaking naturally to do everything from typing, gaming, even 3D modeling) I completely understand Worf, his feelings and wants My point is that you cannot judge someone if you have not experienced what they are going through yourself and as for the 'coward's way out' remark, sometimes life just throws you a curveball that you cannot hit nor avoid, just take the hit and fall and sometimes the ball hits you right in the chest which stops your heartbeat, in which case all you can do is fall and there is no alternative, and by that I mean sometimes you just cannot get up anymore, you cannot just dust yourself off and walk it off Is suicide an option? I would say it's always an option, because sometimes you just can't handle whatever is in front of you, however, 9 times out of 10 the problem is solvable and you can get through it, as people are more resilient than they think they are and you cannot blame that 1 out of 10 for doing what they did, you can only blame the world for being the way it is

@@ccirish4519 maybe one day when im long gone they will find a way to fix a broken spinal cord or in Worf's case, replicate a whole new one, but im not holding my breath it'll be any time soon as for finding a way to cope, the only way to win is by not playing the game (since there is no way to cheat Kirk style, haha) and by that i mean i stopped hoping or wishing ..for all intent and purposes, i quit, i simply ..exist.. i accepted my fate, such as it is and given that i have no other choice, i simply go on day by day looking for some sort of escape or distraction from the reality of such a 'life'.. whether by gaming or helping people by giving them advice or simply being there for them and trying to give them my wisdom and tell them about my experiences

@@Tin047 The difference between you two is that: a) They could fix Worf b) The worse result of the fixing failing was Worfs death. Which he wanted anyway. If that was a real world scenario, I could absolutely understand a person going depressive and contemplating suicide. I probably would be one myself. But this was not the Real World. And he was literally turning down a chance to fight this fate.

People who are saying "Being crippled is like death for a Klingon" as if the entire species is all warriors and all are required to be able-bodied in order to live a good life. These arguments very much fall into a "Planet of the Hats" trope mindset. (All klingons are warriors, all romulans are treacherous, all ferengi are greedy, etc...) There are Klingon lawyers, Klingon merchants, economists, bureaucrats, and technicians... Word is suicidal because his chosen career path of a warrior may no longer be traditionally viable for him, but that doesn't mean he can't still be a warrior of some kind or that he can't find a way to put his skills to good use in other ways. Worf immediately chose this path, without much time to find an alternative. Of course, Riker, his friend, would try and get him to see it in a different light. Worf could become a leader, using his tactical instincts to help lead warriors. Worf could (and in canon did) become an ambassador, using his unique viewpoint of being the first Klingon in Starfleet to bring about better relations. Worf could develop warrior techniques that could be utilized in his current condition. If all Klingons give up after being paralyzed why not be the first one to ever give paralyzed Klingons a chance to keep doing what they want to? Worf closed himself off to those possibilities and decided that he needed to die. If Worf considered those possibilities and made some effort before deciding to take the ritual then maybe his request could be understandable. As it is, Worf gave up almost immediately. Why shouldn't Riker try and get him to see that?

If you think about it, the episode where Jeordi remote controls the robot on the other ship through his implants, that man/machine interface didn't require those implants, and neither did the one Barkley built. Worf could directly interface with the ship itself, let alone any other vessels way more bad ass then just he was and live out as a "Netrunner" by Cyberpunk Terminology.

@@MasterofSpiders I don't think the writers "didn't think of him", I think they didn't care about Kurn because it didn't serve the story and message they were trying to convey. A writer's job isn't to make sure everything remains 100% consistent throughout the series, the writer's job is to create an entertaining story for us to enjoy or maybe create dialogue around. Consistency gets thrown out the window pretty often throughout Star Trek's various shows, TOS being the biggest offender of that. Gene Roddenberry himself often wrote scripts that contradicted scripts he wrote beforehand because the entertainment value of the episode was more important to him than consistency.

In DS9, the assisted suicide was done by the family member but here, Riker said the family member just gives him the knife
