The know-it-all quality the Wesley Crusher character got me thinking of life back when TNG first came out. I'm a few years older than Wil Wheaton and a good 10 years younger than the average main cast member. This was a time when computers were relatively new and the user interfaces were extremely clunky. Teenagers picked up the new technology a lot easier, while people of Patrick Stewart's generation were often frustrated and either slow to adopt or forced to ask their kids or young work colleagues for help. Any time I visited my parents after starting college, I was always setting up their computers, VCRs, stereos, etc. That dynamic was unusually common back then and probably had something to do with how Wesley's season 1 character was, unfortunately, written.
@evieblue95911 ай бұрын
That ... had not occurred to me, although I'm not a Wesley hater anyway. Probably because I similarly started watching TNG when I was 17. He just reminds me of my brother. King of like how I never got the "she's too annoying" Dawn haters for Buffy ... I mean, have they MET younger sisters?

Something I never noticed before but noticed here in this video clip - Troi. During the episode with Admiral Jameson on the bridge, that clip you showed at about 18:20. She kept glancing and looking over at the Admiral while she was trying to explain something to Picard. It's almost like she was picking up something about the Admiral but didn't know what, so she was being hyper-observant concerning him to the point where she couldn't just look at Picard during her "report". I never noticed that before. REALLY good acting on the part of Marina Sirtis! These little body animations these actors and actresses include are VERY subtle, but they say so much when you finally notice them.

Plus, it was TV so you get a preview or commercial for the next episode, so you are kinda watching it like we did back then. There was a novel called Q Squared, did have Trelane as part of the Q Continuum. You guys are right that Riker was suppose to be the Kirk type character with Picard being on the ship, doing more heady stuff. Also hit it right with us being along for the ride. @UFDFNaruto11 ай бұрын
From an ascetics point of view sure, its the nicest, but from a practical point of view, its one of the worst, the best ones are the Original Enterprise and the Defiant, one of the main things working against this bridge, and even Voyagers is that the captain should be able to see all stations at any point in time to make snap decisions, being in the middle of the bridge, Picard could only ever see Helm and Conn , but any of the science stations and tactical, he could not just spin around and see whats going on, same with Voyager. The Defiant and OG Enterprise, you had a chair in the middle of the bridge which had the ability to view all stations at any time. Do not get me wrong, I LOVE the Galaxy bridge, it is iconic, but it not the best design

I think the key thing that’s always made me like this show (especially after the introduction of ten forward) is the sense of place. The enterprise feels like a real place with real people living on it. Most shows, especially recently, can be fun and dramatic, but lack that sense of place. The inverse of your experience, I knew and loved Frakes as Riker, which hyped me up for Beyond Belief. *Edit:* I'm with you guys on almost everything, and I'm especially critical of the writing and acting for Wesley, but I think that the reason his line comes off as wooden in the episode is because--like many kids--the character is trying to put on an affectation of bravery, integrity, and the attitude of an idealized Starfleet officer. I think it's one of only a few times where his Wil's acting seemed pretty realistic to me. I could be wrong, though.

For those who have seen The Motion Picture and season 1 of Next Gen, a cool fact is that before it became a movie, TMP was going to be a new series, Star Trek: Phase II. Scripts and sets were already in development. Many early Next Gen scripts were adaptations of never used ones for the tv show. Roddenberry also used a few similar characters as in these scripts. Problem was he had already adapted those characters for TMP. So that's why.. Decker becomes Riker, Ilia becomes Deanna.

@JAYWALKER100011 ай бұрын
You have a point. They set the dynamic up in ST:TMP where they figured Shatner was unable to duck and roll like old times and wouldn't be lead on every away mission. I think they were unsure of Stewart. Frakes is there to take over as "new Kirk" if Stewart doesn't appeal to the audience. A big part is the writers not knowing what to do with a split Kirk (action hero vs wise captain) and they're still relying on barely adjusted "Phase II" (ST:TMP still in the womb) scripts. If Stewart wasn't happy could have been him instead of Crosby who left the series.

Interesting your take on Wil Wheaton's acting in "Justice" because I actually interpreted that very differently. When he says "I'm with Starfleet, we don't lie", I interpreted that as him essentially being a kid pretending to be a Starfleet Officer. Or rather, something a teenager would say when he's trying to impress adults. I thought he was saying it "wooden" that way on purpose, as though he was a teenager from a superior culture and educated these backwards alien adults. At least, that's how I interpreted his delivery there. It sounded more condescending to me.
@t.j._fury11 ай бұрын
I agree, that's the way I interpreted it, too. He's a teenager who idolizes the officers around him, and so he is squaring himself up. Trying to say what, & sound the way he thinks a Starfleet Officer would, serious and stoic. If he sounded wooden in his delivery, the director should have given him a note & done another take(s). That *is* part of his job. I don't think we should put it *all* on the actor.

I agree that the first season is better than most remember especially with character moments. I’m a lifelong Trekkie, grew up with the original series and crew, and seeing TNG for the first time at 8 years old I was hooked from the start and it’s definitely my favourite Trek series. I think where most are coming from when they say the first season was bad is because of two things. First there was a lot of trouble behind the scenes with some producers and writers fighting each other, the second reason is that when you start watching the 3rd & 4th season and try to go back to the start you can definitely tell the difference in storytelling and production quality but the first couple of seasons get a bad rap but there is some really good episodes and character development moments scattered throughout. TNG’s strengths is in the likability of the characters, it’s a great ensemble show. Love your reactions and looking forward to the rest of your Trek journey 🖖

There is another big franchise where exactly the same thing happened in the fandom. Where there is a loud part who will tell you "Just skip those first 10%". And when I watched it anyways, a ton of later recurring important characters, lore and injokes get set up there. I would have missed SO much and been way less invested later. And I think on a REwatch, that's completely fine. If I'd ever rewatch TNG, I'll probably skip 90% of Season 1. But that only works because at some point I've watched it and I still know where they started. Getting those first bits of the characters, those friendships forming for the first time, those different cultures and worldviews clashing. To me that's a very important part of getting invested.

I'll guess that those of us that tell people they can skip the first two seasons are ones that learned appreciate it after those seasons, because comparatively it makes sense

The way I describe it to people is that seasons 1 & 2 are more similar to TOS in the way stories are written and presented. Remember that TOS wasn't a *huge* deal while on the air, it became more of a cult hit in syndication during the '70s. When Gene's health took a turn for the worse, he stepped back from TNG and other writers could work outside of Gene's playbook. There's a noticable step up in quality across the board, and there will be many, many more memorable episodes. The fact that TNG didn't get Emmy nominations until it's final season is practically criminal. It really was some of the best primetime TV in the '90s, drawing in people that weren't "sci-fi people"

If you're Seinfeld fans (and I didn't know he was like this on TNG but it makes sense) Lawrence Tierney played Elaine's father in just one episode and his character was intimidating to both George (who did an awesome impression of him, "he's in the bathroom.") and Jerry, "Well you're not wearing that on the street with me and my daughter, that's for damned sure!" But in the behind the scenes Julia Luis Dreyfus said he was a complete nut job and it was too bad because they would've brought him back as his character was outstanding. But in the apartment set there was a knife set on the counter and suddenly the large butcher knife was missing and everyone knew he had taken it. Finally Jerry went up to him and asked what he had in his jacket and the colour ran from his face as the gig was up so he improvised pulling it out and doing the Psycho kill music sounds pretending to stab Jerry. Great classic villain type characters from him but was really crazy IRL.

I was thinking a lot a lot about how they treat Picard and Riker in this first season, and I think the word was that they were scared of Picard not being liked cause I don’t think THEY liked him

Hind sight is 20/20. Yes they "could" have done this or that better, they "could" have had better writing, etc. But they didn't do it that way. It was new for them at the time too. I look at season one as "the baby steps" stage and they progress from there. This was an introductory season, introduce the crew, reveal more and more about them as the episodes proceed... the same with protagonists and antagonists. I have thoroughly enjoyed your "fresh eyes" take on season one and your impressions about the characters and stories. I'm looking forward to season two.

They had to have Worf get beat down easily in Conspiracy, or else the alien threat would not have seemed so overwhelming. It communicates the message that: "They can easily defeat even a Klingon in hand-to-hand combat! They are a real threat!" It would have really diffused the tension if Worf even came close to beating the guy. But yeah, if they never (or rarely) show Worf as a real badass, such moments also lose some power...

Alex, I also have fumble tongue. At this age I have to go through 4 words before I get the right one. At a younger age I had a stutter. Oral presentations were hell. Also have dyslexic typing "hell'' came out "jell" twice.

Look at it this way - season 1 wasn't great as compared to what comes later .. but it's definitely needed to lay the groundwork and THAT is definitely worth it. I can't wait to see your reaction to the Data heavy episode in season 2 - episode 9.

Guys, the real difference is you didn’t start with the cage when you started with watching the original 79 episodes of this original series and with this series with the TV movie pilot of Farpoint you started with episode one and you went through Non only chronological order but production order And by doing that it’s quite different now. What’s funny is back in the day in 1987 before they launched the series. They had a bunch of video magazines shows all over the country stories on Paramount is hoping that you like these characters like you liked what’s his name? What’s his name and what’s his yours and you know what they mean , it’s funny you were watching this almost 25 years after the fact and you’re asking the same questions that people were asking before it even came on the air. I like this one and now I gotta watch the other stuff you posted. I’m moving onto the next video but keep up the good work

I can’t speak for everyone, but I can at least speak as a life-long second generation Trekkie. Star Trek is such an amazing franchise and it can literally change the world, but it often gets a bad reputation as being, “boring” and “not enough action.” So, I think that’s why as much as fans like me WANT people to experience it, we don’t want new fans to get discouraged either. Speaking from personal experience as a MS science teacher, the slower pace tends to lose people. So, when guys like you genuinely are excited to check it out, I think it’s a knee jerk reaction to say, “IT GETS BETTER! WE SWEAR!” But, I am so happy you both are enjoying it and I cannot wait to see your reaction of what’s to come!

True although Season 2 suffered due to a writers' strike. You can definitely tell in some episodes, but like you said there were a few gems.

I think the biggest problem with the first two seasons is that they were modeled after TOS, season 3 and beyond TNG, finally came into their own.

I think it took the writers awhile to figure out what to do with Worf. But don't worry, he has some great episodes in the future!

I've said it before and I'll say it again; just because a member of the crew is given the conn of the ship, it does not make them captain! A ship - whether in the fictional world of Star Trek or real life in the Navy or merchant marine - has only one captain! The Commanding Officer, no matter his actual rank, is by tradition called Captain. Most starship commanders in Star Trek also happen to hold the military rank of Captain as well. The ship's captain cannot spend 24/7 sitting in the centrr seat. Other officers are put in charge from time to time, whether as a watch assignment or simply to take over for a few minutes if the CO is otherwise occupied. Any qualified crew member can be given the conn, which means command of the bridge and vessel for a given time. You will often see Picard tell some crew member, "You have the conn." That doesn't suddenly make that officer the captain, just ty he captain's direct representative. In the real world this officer would be called the Officer of the Deck. In Star Trek they are generally referred to as the Watch Officer. A ship has only ONE Captain!

One day my friends, you will understand what we were trying to say about season one. Season one was figuring out how this show will look and slowly working out the kinks in everything. It gets so much better in every possible way from here. And that’s what we are talking about. Bad in comparison to what’s coming. People were purposely helping you to lower your expectations only so you would like season 1 better than it is if you went in with higher hopes. The bar gets raised so far after this that season one is still foundational and the characters fun to see where they begin, but the adventure has barely just begun!
@Bagofsoup11 ай бұрын
All in all, I really enjoyed your look back on season 1 and largely agree with most anything, other than anything I just happen to know in hindsight that you guys are having to still guess at. But you guys do a really wonderful job at getting into star trek and observing everything. Really well done all the way from the beginning of your journey into star trek until now. Looking forward to the rest. I am pledging to be in it with you all for all of star trek. I have rarely every said that about any other reaction channels trying to take on a project this massive!

In my personal opinion, the first few seasons of old Trek shows were never bad, they just pale in comparison to later seasons, which is probably why many people think they weren't good at all. They were pretty okay though, it's just that the shows improve quite much and later seasons are way better than earlier ones, which in turn might influence the way we look back at the first seasons, after having witnessed how much better the shows can (and will) get.
