Hey I have to say, I felt the same way, but after many years of much, much worse movies having drastically lowered my expectations, not to mention all the progressive effects, sound and original film negative sourced remastering for each new higher definition digital format, I can see now that when seen through younger, fresher eyes, the script actually isn’t too bad. With a higher budget, better effects and less behind the scenes executive meddling, it could well have been received better when it first came out. Then again, we may have missed out on alien felines looking like they’d just come from a Cats cosplay convention, sound dubbed with James Brown’s scream. ;)

I was so pumped for this movie! I was there in the theater opening night so excited. When the lights came up after the movie was over, I felt underwhelmed because I had expected so much more. I was still thrilled to see spend time with these wonderful characters and have always loved the character development of “The Big Three” in this film, they finally acknowledge what we’ve known all along, they are a family. So, the new bridge… The bridge that was built for Phase II/ Planet of the Titans, and then was redesigned for TMP and modified for WOK and used in SFS and TVH was accidentally destroyed in November 1988 during the second season production of TNG. The bridge set was dismantled and stored outside so that TNG could use its soundstage. A freak rainstorm rolled in and ruined the sets. A set which existed for 10 years was lost in an instant. Shatner was advised to bring in Herman Zimmerman, the production designer from TNG to design and build a totally new bridge. They were able to save the turbolift alcoves and incorporate those into the new design.

Never understood why so many Trekkies had a problem with the supposed continuity issues with Spocks brother or Kirks son. Just because something was not mentioned, does not mean that it does not exist. For example i never knew that my Grandmother had a brother until her funeral. She never mentioned him. And that was my family. The Enterprise crew are primarily collegues at work on a mission, so you propably dont know everything about each other. I spend more time with my collegues at my work than with my family, but do i know how many family members they have? No.

@MAMoreno Spock having a half-brother on his father's side is not that unbelievable. I knew someone who had a half-brother they didn't know about and never got to meet because they died around the time frame they learned of their existence. Sybok's existence could be handwaved as him being a disowned son of Sarek who's something of a forbidden topic and likely wasn't too well known before his banishment. The other relative? That's where they're really stretching it for me and I already have issues with Sybok as is.

I think Stewart's commitment to making Professor X look as frail as he was in Logan really bit him in the butt. Besides which, it's not like he's just some dude. That's frickin CAPTAIN KIRK. Did Josh somehow forget??? The guy's a formidable athlete, a supreme soldier, one of the best fighters in Starfleet. He's not just some gym teacher or some captain of the love boat. I think Josh is just ignorant to that reality, since Mike Tyson is age 55 and is STILL boxing with 90% of his same prowess+ power. So that's an actual fact. Then you have Tom Cruise who can sprint at high speeds at nearly the age of 60, not to mention doing vigorous stunts. Also a straight up FACT. And I'm pretty sure Tom Cruise the actor is NO Captain Kirk. There are hundreds of examples in REALITY for the elderly at ages 55, 65 and even 70 that are performing on high athletics. There's a 70 year old man running the 100 yard dash in 13 seconds, can even Alex do that. So that's another Fact. Since none of these hundreds of examples can compare to Captain Kirk then Kirk is at LEAST on their level.

While I wouldn't say that Sybok is my favorite Trek antagonist, I do think he is underappreciated. Laurence Luckinbill plays him completely sincerely and with such charisma that you really do see why people would join up and follow him. The audience is led to dismiss his talk of God "calling to him" as a delusion, like a crazy person hearing voices. But also, we saw in "The Motion Picture" that Vulcans, including Spock, can make telepathic contact on a basic level with powerful conscious entities in deep space. Considering what they find might have actually been a creature like Apollo that pretended to be a god on Earth and other worlds, who can really blame Sybok for mistaking telepathic communication from such a creature as the real thing? And he's completely truthful. He really doesn't want violence or to hurt anyone. He really thinks he's helping people. He really does believe he's finding God. And as soon as he realizes he was wrong he instantly tries to save everyone by sacrificing himself. If not for his megalomania one might consider him a fairly decent person (granted that's a big flaw to overlook.)

Film also suffered major budget cuts, there was originally going to be these giant Rock Monsters on the planet which there is test footage for one of. Some TNG sets were used, with one shot of the Mad Max goons running through the Enterprise D's hallways. The D's battle bridge was also heavily redressed to be the Enterprise A's bridge which is why it was missing from season 2, but it was the mildly redressed for Season 2's Peak performance

The woman playing Spock’s mother, Amanda Sarek, was an acting teacher of mine, chosen because of her resemblance to Jane Wyatt but also because she was a dialect coach, so she could do the New England sound. She had some not-so-flattering recollections of being directed by Shatner. Her line was, “Neither his nor mine”, as she looks at the baby, so it would’ve been a double-rejection of Spock by both parents - but she came to Shatner as an actor would, after doing her research, asking why an Earth woman would move to Vulcan and have a baby with an alien, only to reject him, to which Shatner said, “JUST…..SAAAAY… THE LINE!!” …She did…and then it was cut anyway.

Also they've done all the other types of TOS episodes already, horny Sci fi, character villain, personal melodrama, comedy and now they've finally made a film version of the awkward and fumbling episodes. Unfortunately we never get a Planet that's Just One Aspect of Earth movie but aside from that they do cover every type of tos episode in the movies.

29:45 5'9" Michael Keaton played Batman and 5'7" Tom Cruise gets mostly super spy and hero roles, it would have been easy for 5'10" Shatner to play Superman. Hollywood is filled with diminutive heroes.
@captainbryce18 ай бұрын
Yeah but Superman in the comics is supposed to be 6’3”. Tyler Hoechlin (the current TV Superman) is the shortest actor to ever play Superman in live action and he’s 6’0”. George Reeves was 6’1”, Brandon Routh 6’2”, Tom Welling 6’3”, and Christopher Reeve (the tallest and most famous Superman) was 6’4”. A 5’10” Superman might have worked back in the 60s, but it definitely wouldn’t work today given the precedent that has been set.

@@captainbryce1: Well it's movies, you control everything, particular Perception. So you can make look anyone look as tall or short as you want. Look at Judge Dredd, Stallone was made to look super tall just as in the comics source material. Lookit Lord of the Rings, Gimli actor was made to look shorter than the elves, etc etc. If your face matches the drawings and your personality matches the character then you're 90% done, the 10% is just special effects

Regarding Shatner and his memory of making the Original Series; A story William Shatner often told at conventions was about how he was a guest at a convention in the 80's. They had him in a nearby hotel room waiting to go on stage and when he turned on the TV it happened to be playing an episode of the original Star Trek. He began to watch and got completely into the episode. When the convention organizer came to bring him on stage, he didn't want to leave the room because, as he stated, "I didn't remember making that episode!" and he wanted to see how it ended. The main thing Shatner remembered about his time on TOS were who the guest stars were for a given episode, and that was what he remembered about making them. But a few episodes did not have Guest Stars he could connect the episode to, and as a result could not remember having made those few episodes. Ironically, a few years after Star Trek Generations was released, he came out with a pair of books titled, "Star Trek Memories" and "Star Trek Movie Memories."

Star Trek Memories is a good read. He may not have had firm recollection of all the plotlines, but one thing he remembered was his action scenes and developing Kirk's unique fighting style. It's kind of way different to make a movie/show than to watch it. They do a lot of scenes out of order and there's no effects. So, if you're busy and don't actually watch yourself after, it's understandable that the plots might not stick in your brain.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is awesome, it’s my favorite Indy film and you should definitely watch it. Spielberg and Ford are great, Short-Round is great and by far the best sidekick of the Indy films and the last hour is one hell of a wild ride of non-stop action. One of the best movie going experiences I had back in the 80’s!
@Jessica_Roth8 ай бұрын
I completely hate Temple of Doom. It overdoes the "constant peril" trope to the point where I was thinking that Indy should be having a heart attack right about now. (Both I and III had time-lapses that allowed Indy to catch his breath.) Kate Capshaw's shrieking idiot is so one-dimensional that it's depressing to think Spielberg dumped Nice Jewish Girl Amy Irving for this shiksa. (Capshaw was a decent actress in her soap-opera days, so it's mostly the script, but this is a HUGE step down from Indy having an actual relationship with Marion [Karen Allen]) Ke Huy Quan was so much the stereotypical annoying kid/token native that I still resent him, "Everything Everywhere All at Once" or not. If I had wanted to watch "The Goonies" (with near-racist tokenism). I would have. (Yes, "The Goonies" was a few years later. The point still holds.)

I think Sean Connery was better off as Henry Jones Sr. I don’t think he would have gotten along with Shatner and other members of the TOS cast based on his personality since this is late era Sean Connery where he was starting to grow jaded with the industry.

The prevailing theory as to why the Enterprise A was falling apart was that the ship was originally the Yorktown and was renamed in honor of the Enterprise. It was as old or older than the first Enterprise. Star Fleet was in a rock and a hard place. On one hand, Kirk disobeyed orders, stole the Enterprise and then destroyed it while stirring up trouble with the Klingons. On the other hand Kirk saved the planet from the probe. So the Enterprise A was both his punishment and reward.

I was 10 when this movie came out and I was all hyped to see it, but my parents wouldn't let me because they heard that it was about the Enterprise searching for God and decided it would be sacrilegious. (I was also not allowed to watch the TNG Season 2 premiere because it was about Counselor Troi having a child out of wedlock.)

I always wondered how many of Sybok’s followers got left behind on Nimbus? They couldn’t all fit on the shuttle craft? Or maybe they took most of his group and left Kirk’s raiding party behind?

Enough time passed at the end of 4 for the unveiling of the Enterprise-A, but not for it to be finished yet. I think that's why Scotty bumped his head. He just wasn't completely familiar with the ship yet.

Saccharine is an artificial sweetener used in diet drinks. To say something is "too saccharine" means that it is sickeningly sweet in a very artificial way, such that it leaves a bad aftertaste (as saccharine does).

I'm weird, I don't hate this movie like everyone seems to. Despite the accepted credo that the odd movies are the bad ones, I love the odd movies, they generally have much less action movies and are more cerebral, which is what I want from Star Trek. I've always hated the 'it's a movie make it a movie' mindset. That's how you get bad movies that don't feel like the source material. I'd rather a 'long big budget' episode over all the attempts to make it an action movie, but that complaint is for another day down the series of movies.

Not mine, but I can definitely see why it would be. It's the only one with unadulterated action with Indy basically being a cross between a secret agent and a superhero. He doesn't have any baggage from his backstory, it's the most pulpy action.

Regarding the Indiana Jones films, I haven't seen the most recent, but I didn't think Crystal Skull was any worse than Temple of Doom. I had found that the films were kind of an inverse of the Star Trek movies: where the even-numbered Star Trek movies are the "good" ones, with Indy the "odd" numbered ones are the "good" ones. I would love to see you guys do the Indiana Jones movies when you're done with trek, or possible as a side thing. Incidentally, as an archaeology major in college, the front page of our textbook had a picture of Indiana Jones captioned "Don't be that guy."
