If "The Final Frontier" had been a standalone film, it would honestly be remembered is an okay 80's sci fi movie. It's really only terrible in the context of Star Trek. It's a ton of Shatner's baggage, and comes nestled in between objectively better takes on the franchise. If almost the exact same movie had been "Roger Corman Presents: Steller Wanderers: A Last Frontier," people would call it a lost gem and say it was a shame that there was never a Stellar Wanderers II.

Scotty's accent is about as accurate as Chekov's. The guy giving Kirk the orders was Harve Bennet the writer/producer. The Vulcan Lyre at the end was used by Spock on the TV show - that's what you get for skimming the series!

I love this film, despite all its shortcomings. Jerry Goldsmith's score is stellar, the performances are great, and there is an interesting idea at the base of it. And! without it, we would never have heard of marsh melons. 🙂

I always loved Captain Klaa. Unlike Kruge, who wanted to use Genesis to destroy a civilization, he wasn't evil. All he wanted was a worthy opponent. And he ended up admiring Kirk. Plus he looked like a badass.

In all fairness his original treatment was heavily re-written by Harve Bennett and David Loughery. Funny they're never mentioned at all when people criticise the film. And Walter on the subject of writing my friend.....Shatner's original vision for the film was a lot darker and even deeper and i think after the success of the "lighter" Star Trek 4 Paramount didn't have the balls to tackle it.

Kirk always had the great speeches. His speech in Return To Tomorrow was his best about the dangers about being on a Starship. "I'm in command, I could order this, but I'm not because Dr. McCoy is right about pointing out the enormous danger potential in any contact of life of intelligence".....to "Risk....risk is our business. That's what this Starship is all about, that's why we are aboard her". Something Jen missed. It was season 2 episode 20 just in case Jen reads this.

This movie is basically one big "The Original Series"-Tribute: Strong Focus on the Trio of Kirk/Spock/McCoy and their relationship, the Enterprise getting hijacked, the Crew fighting against a being that pretends to be Godlike but really isnt... And *that* McCoy-Scene hits hard. Indeed, the entire Observation Longue-Scene does.

Final Frontier was saved by the Row Row Row Your Boat at the end I think and the big three pairing of this movie and the best quote from Dr. McCoy "I liked him better before he died". The best part was that long awaited special origin story about Dr. McCoy and why he was always like he was. That was the big surprise for me.

Which Uniform do you think she would look best in? The 2260s, (TOS traditional) or the late 2270s-2340s (Wrath of Khan-Just before TNG)? Then TNG uniforms kept changing. And for the best season, one, and two are made of spandex and we’re very ugly. Season 3 and beyond use the more muted color, which is a lot more pleasing, and the material wasn’t as formfitting. Can you have the DS9’s/Voyager jumpsuits. And most peoples favorite, the TNG movie /DS9 jacket and trousers. Say what you will, but I’m always partial to the STO Odessey Uniforms. Sure they could use more color But nothing brings all the classic eras of trek in one uniform style. He even brought back the skirts and boots (optional) in the female duty uniform. What they didn’t really designed the skirt with a matching pattern to the jacket. Your only option is the cadet pattern which does not match.

It gets to me that I still remember seeing this in theaters as a kid. At the time I didn’t like it but it grew on me once I got more into Star Trek fandom. I think what makes this work for me is the trio of Kirk, Spock and McCoy. They’ve always had that relationship but this was one of the new times each character had time to shine and play off each other. I believe this was released around the time when The Next Generation started. The sixth film is one of my favorites. Before TNG you have to see a few TV episodes. There are totally must sees just like the OST films.

The best parts of this movie are any scenes with William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelly. Those scenes were pure gold. DeForest Kelley also had an incredible scene later on in the movie. Fun fact: The last scene with Kirk, Spock and Bones singing "Row Your Boat" and then the credits rolled was the last scene with the three main characters together. However Shatner, Nimoy and Kelly would remain good friends up until Kelly's death in 1999.

IMO, ST V is a great story. The execution was the problem, and that lay with the way the studios kept reducing the funds in the middle of filming it. Things they planned to do they couldn't, but the set ups were there. Despite that, I still like it for what it brings to the trio.

This is why I hate this movie, the wasted potential. The basic plot, a malevolent god-like entity using a prophet to escape a prison, is a good premise and very much in line with Star Trek's history of god-like beings. Kirk's speech about needing his pain is fantastic. But it's just so poorly executed.

This exactly. Shatner had wanted to make it more action-packed and epic in scope, but the studio slashed the budget to a ridiculous level. So the script had to be re-written, and the production had to go with a cut-rate VFX shop. I can't imagine what drove Paramount to sabotage their own tentpole property, but I can only assume it was down to a lack of confidence in Shatner as a director.

Jen! Perceptive, as usual. Regarding shots, ILM was not available for this movie, so the effects shots were not up to snuff. Glad you've done them all so far. Upcoming, the sixth movie was directed by the same director who did "...Wrath..." It's a really good movie. And please note, I'm really big on music; I have a degree in it, and I roomed with a film-score nut in college with several-hundred film scores. Note: The music in Star Trek VI is incredible.

The whole movie was made "on the cheap". II, III and IV all had effects created by Industrial Light and Magic, while this one was handled by some random other team and it shows. They were also supposed to get a huge "angels and demons wrath of God" battle at the end and all of that was cut and replaced by the blue cloud that fired laser eye-beams. There were serious problems with the plot, but having it all look so comparatively cheap next to the others certainly did not help.

I was trying to figure out why Spock called them "Marsh Melons" and here is the reason: J.M. Dillard's novelization of the movie, McCoy knows that Spock is going to do extensive pre-camping research, so he pranks him by getting a computer tech to change “marshmallows” to “marsh melons” everywhere they're referenced. I'm sure this has been answered already but James Doohan (Scotty) was Canadian. A veteran of WW2 and apparently a badass pilot before turning to acting after the war. During his time as a pilot he apparently slalomed his plane between a series of telephone poles to "see if I could do it."

Most of this crew is now dead, ST6 is the last with the whole crew but I generations you get to see Kirk, Scotty and Chekov one last time. James Doohan (Scott) is dead now too but Shatner (Kirk), Koneig (Chekov) and Takei (Sulu) is still around. The Abrams prequel reboot used Nimoy as old spock and the 3rd movie has dedications to both him and the actor who played young Chekov who was murdered by his car. He was changing the oil and the car started, put itself in gear and pinned him to the garage door. RIP to those lost.

I have got a little bit of Star Trek trivia for you. The musical theme to the show was written by the composer Alexander Courage. His contract stated that he would receive royalties every time the show aired and that music was played. Unknown to him, Gene Roddenberry wrote some cheesy lyrics to the song and chose not to use them. Therefore entitling him to half of the royalties as a co-writer. He was not expecting the show to be as successful as it became and was trying to get some money from it.

Also, it gives us our first portly "Klingon" that inspires overweight men across the nation to show up as one at conventions! Something that always got me. This movie's main theme song is the same as the TV show, Star Trek: The Next Generation. I did not think this was as bad as people say. I think it was Shatner's haters and at the time The Next Generation was taking off. Interesting facts, I found out, that Sybok was supposed to be played by Sean Connery. That fell through so they named the "GOD" planet, Shar Con Ree. Also, the guy they got to play Sybok was and I think still is married to Lucie Arnaz, the daughter of Lucille Ball, the woman who ran Desilu Studios and produced the Original Series

To answer your question, Jen, James Doohan was of Irish descent (both his parents were from Belfast), but he was born and raised in Canada, born in Vancouver, and raised in Sarnia, ON (on the border with Michigan). Shatner also was born and grew up in Canada, in Westmount, Quebec (a wealthy, bilingual suburb of Montreal).

Shatner also lived for in Sarnia, Ontario, for a short period of time. Doohan actually was an engineer. He graduated from a Technical School called Sarnia Collegiate Instatute of Technology or S.C.I.T's for short.

I think your evaluation of the movie is pretty much spot on. I’m glad you were able to enjoy it for what it is: a movie with a so-so plot and inconsistent direction, but some nice and fun scenes for the main characters. Fortunately, the next one is better … for some reason the even-numbered Trek movies were invariably the best.

Like myself and yourself, James Doohan is (or rather, was, rest his soul) Canadian - born in Vancouver - and was apparently quite good at doing multiple accents. Fun fact, he was missing the middle finger on his right hand, which he lost during a battle later on in the day after the Canadian landing at Juno Beach during D-Day. With Simon Pegg being English, it wasn't until 2023 that Scotty would finally be portrayed by a real Scotsman.

When my son was about 10, I showed him all of the Star Trek films in order. He loved this one. I think the goofiness in it upset hard-core Star Trek fans, but I think kids and people that had no predetermined demands on Star Trek liked it.

My favourite quote is coming up in the next AND FANTASTIC movie, The Undiscovered Country. (I wont spoil it Captain Jen) I loved William Shatner as a Director, but didn't like the "God" storyline of this movie. Star Trek is a journey. I am glad to be taking it with this channel.

There is at least one episode in the original TV series in which Spock played his Vulcan lyre while Uhura sang: "Charlie X" (season 1, episode 2--one of the first episodes). And he also played an instrumental piece with a bunch of space hippies in another episode: "The Way to Eden" (season 3, episode 20--one of the last episodes). So Spock is a musician, and this was the case practically from the beginning, not just something thrown in out of nowhere for the campfire scene in _Star Trek V_ . As for his instrument, it looks like a lyre to me, and it is often called a Vulcan lyre. Some fans call it a Vulcan harp instead, while others call it a Vulcan lute. I don't think it's a type of lute because it doesn't seem to have a resonating chamber, but I'm not an expert. Perhaps some fans confuse its curved bridge with a hole for a resonating chamber, but I'm pretty sure it's just some kind of bridge. It's kind of a combination lyre and solid-body lute, it might be argued. Whatever it is, there are people who have made this for themselves, so you could say it's a real musical instrument that exists, albeit obviously it's not really from Vulcan. Now I want to make one of my own. And a plectrum shaped like a pointy Vulcan ear. 🤪

Born in Vancouver in 1920, he served in the 14th Field Artillery Regiment of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. He also served as an Artillery Forward Observation Officer (FOO) and pilot. He saw combat in Europe during World War II, including the D-Day invasion of Normandy, in which he was wounded, apparently by friendly fire. After the war, he had extensive experience performing in radio and television, which led to his role as Scotty.

This one would have been a fine two-part episode, it just doesn't have the gravitas of the other films (except maybe the first). The word "dream" occurs 9 times in the dialogue, from the beginning to the end, and each occurrence is relevant to the movie's main plot. The theme is also related to another of the movie's themes: that is, where do we look for God? When McCoy asks, "Is God really out there?", Kirk replies, "Maybe He's not out there, Bones. Maybe He's right here, in the human heart."

I'm so glad you enjoyed this one, Jen. It is unfairly maligned. I feel the same way that you feel; it's my least favorite of the original six but I still love it. Shatner's direction can be a little clunky at times, but he was working under a lot of strain, including having his budget cut halfway through the film.

Considering how Shatner wrote the rest of the cast outside of the big three I believe this movies criticisms are fair. Shatner's direction is the least of the issues in this film. It's the writing that really kept it down. Just as TMP was a weak tea remake of the Changeling, so this is a poorly remade Who Mourns for Adonis. But no one can deny the scene with Bones and his dad. That was A level directing and acting.

While it's not the best Star Trek movie, this is the movie I watched on VHS the most when I was a kid. I also have the soundtrack on audiocassette, as well as digitally. I love Jerry Goldsmith's score for this movie. This is the first time that his Star Trek theme was used in a movie since The Motion Picture, and since Star Trek: The Next Generation started airing in 1987. Also, the corridors, Sickbay, and Engineering sets are from Star Trek: The Next Generation. For whatever reason, Shatner got a smaller budget for this movie, so they didn't even bother trying to hide the fact that those sets were from Next Gen. Normally they would redress the sets when they used them for multiple productions. The reuse of sets is a tradition for Star Trek going all the way back to the original series in the '60s.

@@TheYakusoku I listened to it so much when I got it in 1997, which is when I got my first stereo, that I wore the cassette tape out. Which is actually why I bought it digitally because while I do have access to a tape player, the tape is warped in certain spots. As for the movie itself, I only have it on DVD now. I'm looking for the 25th Anniversary VHS box set of the first four movies to add to my VHS collection.

I have said it before: STAR TREK V is Shatner's love-letter to what he remembers Star Trek the series being. Focus on the Big Three, God-like being, fist-fights down on the planet, alien-hued skies, Klingons, goofy comedy, etc. This is what happened AFTER the "Five-Year Mission". The big budget "finale" to TOS.

Shatner wrote a series of books called Tek War that was made into a tv series. He also wrote Star Trek books and comics. Along with his records he would literally do anything for a buck. On the lighter side, he did a series of appearances on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (all on KZbin) which are hysterical.

Great reaction! This is not a stinker in my book, but it IS the weakest of the bunch. It does have many redeeming moments, and you acknowledged them. The bonds of the central trio are well exercised here. VI is really going to grab you. BTW, you have such a lovely voice. I really don't get why people don't like this movie. I mean, it's not the **best** Star Trek movie, but it's certainly not the worst, either. It has some really great character moments, especially between the main trio, and it's got some really funny moments, too. The premise isn't that great, but who cares? A plot only exists to give characters something to do, and the characters do a great job in this movie.

Star Trek V was produced during a 1988 Writer's Strike. It has some good character-driven moments and the Goldsmith music score is a keeper. The visual effects by Bran Ferren barely get the job done. The Rock Man in Hell scene was deleted. It was spoofed in Galaxy Quest.
