HELLO, she was SUPPOSED to be a poor fit; that's what would give it REALISM. Starfleet captains would not be TRAINED for that type of scenario, and so EVERYONE should seem out of place! Anyone who thinks Mulgrew is good, has a lower IQ than their shoe-size.

You don't WANT a great fit, you want a great VIBE that represents the situation. Here it was a very desperate plight, and they should have ACTED like it; but Mulgrew and Berman gave all the realism of "Gilligan's Island." "OOF! CHAKOTAY!!!"

Genevieve Bujold was 52 years during the pilot episode filming and was told to dye her hair that was fully gray at the time. That is 12 years older than Kate Mulgrew and was even older than Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard) when he first started filming ST Next Generation at age 47. She would have been a better fit as a guest starring admiral instead.

What people don't get is how extraordinary hard the work conditions where. I saw an Interview with Brent Spiner and he said that they basically worked six days a week up to 12 hours a day PLUS the time that they needed to learn their text and this for 52 weeks per year. And this went on for SEVEN YEARS! There is no way that an internationally reowned movie actress like Bujold would have gotten through seven seasons like that. I guess if they had known form the beginning how long this show would run, they never had taken her in the first way. It still speaks volumes of her that she had a 26 episodes contract but stepped aside for someone else. It was not her fault, sometimes it just doesn't work.

Well... no comparison needed. Kate Mulgrew is Star Trek Voyager. No way no one could do what she did. Her presence is the soul of the show. I can't imagine any other actress that could do this work as well as she did. I can only suspect the sense of " At least something right we did it " from the creators afterwards and now . Well done Mrs. Mulgrew 🙌👏👏👏👏🙌✨️🏆🥇

And Bob Denver is Gilligan. Nobody else could have done what HE did. His presence is the soul of the show. And both with equal realism of the given situation-- i.e. a complete joke where every episode begins like the first one, with no relation to the last. But Gilligan was SUPPOSED to be.

They still had a very expensive mess since the spray they used on Mulgrew's hair caused issues with the film in post production that caused them to have to film every scene she was in a second time after they had already finished the pilot, the disaster was so bad it was the most expensive pilot of any show at that point and cost a comparable amount to the Star Trek movies of that era. Thankfully the show managed to stay on budget after that.

They chose Bujold sight unseen because of her academy award creds, she was never auditioned. They had some actresses who HAD auditioned, though. Once Bujold fell through, they reevaluated the best candidates, and chose Mulgrew. Guess they should have observed Rule of Acquisition #218: Always know what you're buying.

The problem with Bujold is that she refused to audition, and some of the producers were more concerned with scoring an Academy Award winning actress than casting the right actor for the part. If she'd auditioned properly, they would have had a much better indication of her suitability for the role. The fact that she wasn't willing to audition should also have been a huge red flag. i mean....why wouldn't you audition, unless either a monstrous ego or a lack of ability was to blame.

I think she would have grown into it. There is no doubt that she is a passionate and accomplished actress. Just watch her ending monologue and subsequent scene with Richard Burton in "Anne of the Thousand Days". ("One thousand days ... Just a thousand ...") However, she's difficult to work with. I have heard that numerous times. It all worked out the way it was supposed to. Kate Mulgrew is fantastic in everything she does. Red from "Orange is the New Black" will stay with me forever. So will Captain Janeway.

I worked as a P.A. before and hated it. It was 16 hr. days though and Sundays off. I made a promise I would never do that again. Other crew members had to drive back and forth one hour drive one way to the city they live in. One production manager who did a workshop stated, that would be an exhausting day with little sleep and potential dangerous risks. Like getting into a car accident. He talked about making it clear to have a lawyer and let the company know if anything of the sort happened, they would be sued.

I think it is unlikely that Voyager would have survived had Bujold stayed with the show and continued as Captain Janeway. Seeing the small amount of footage there is of Bujold a couple of times in the past I do find it very timid in the way it is delivered and played by her and she does seem completely unsure of what she is doing although that possibly would be expected for a brand new show and a new character and that maybe she was already feeling uncomfortable before filming started, plus we don't know how it would have developed going forward but I don't think we would have had a seven season run of Voyager if Bujold had stayed. Also the feel with the other characters in those couple of scenes that I have seen does not feel comfortable. With Paris or Kim it seems a little uncomfortable and unsure on their part with what they are getting from Bujold but again it could have been the fact that it was early days in shooting but I do not get that same sense when you watch the Mulgrew version of the same scenes. I don't think it was terrible with the scenes that Bujold did however I am not sure that if she had continued viewers of the time would have latched on and enjoyed Voyager as they did with Kate Mulgrew as Janeway. Also until you said it in the video - never knew Nana had said she would play Janeway and do both shows. I wonder how that could have worked??

Seven pages a day? Jeez-Louise! Here I am thinking two pages a day on a student film is a great achievement. Really puts it in perspective. As for the incident itself, these things happen. I think that one of three things would have happened, if Bujold had not quickly realized that she was wrong for the job. 1. She would have, in time, grown into the role. We would still remember Janeway, but we would remember her differently. 2. After a series of substandard performances, the UPN exec's would have pulled the plug on Voyager. And Enterprise would never have happened. 3. They would have killed off Janeway in a surprise Kazon ambush, and there would be a statue of Chakotay (Star Trek's first Native American captain) somewhere in the American midwest.

Ah, yes, The monolithic Captain "Chakotay", whose first name would not ever be revealed unless we had seen that obscure episode (It was "Angus"). Admittedly, having the show change the Captain in the middle of the series would have been a new move for Star Trek, although it had been considered (ST:TNG Season 3 ending to Season 4 premiere). It would have possibly emphasized the dangers that Voyager was experiencing in the Delta quadrant, that anyone on the crew could potentially be killed off.

Before discussing Janeway. VGR was to be a series like no other. It was Lost in Space/Space:1999 fusion. It was meant to have a Chris Boucher flavor(Blake’s 7) and theme. I wanted to see Piller and Taylor to be full control as writers to the very end. But they where just faded aside and before Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman there was Brannon Braga. And should I say more. Because of this individual, VGR really didn’t get better until Season 5. But back to Janeway, Kate Mulgrew is the best improvement of casting and with her costars and only a handful of episodes that is memorable. Mulgrew is the final piece of tape that held this series for 7 full seasons. If she was not cast, guest actresses such as Joanna Cassidy and McCormick would have had the command, presence and attitude to be Captain Janeway. Hell, They could have giving Marina Sirtis as Captain Deana Troi as she had commanding presence later on. Genevieve Bujold was both wooden and a interesting mistake. As it was semi entertaining to see she wasn’t working out!!!! Overall great video.

@@joelellis7035 I found this on Digital Spy : It seems producers were keen to hire an actress with prior cult credentials. Also under consideration were Lynda Carter of Wonder Woman fame, Buck Rogers veteran Erin Gray and Lindsay Wagner, star of The Bionic Woman.

Heard about Bujold's departure before, but always thought it was because she had difficulty pronouncing all the technical terms.

15th..! Heyy...ahh yes, I remember this story back then....Shame it didn't work out for her.....but I always Loved Kate Mulgrew since her days on the TV daytime soap RYAN's HOPE as Mary Ryan, and Mrs Columbo.. .....yea...I'm 60....

I've watched a number of the Columbo movies, and it's a story point rattling around in my head that through some oddity in the space-time continuum, a disheveled man in a rumpled suit and trench coat (who smokes a cigar) appears on the bridge of the Enterprise (no bloody A, B, C, or D). He asks a lot of questions of both Kirk and Spock, and they are both increasingly agitated. They both express this agitation to Columbo, and then Janeway appears saying something to the effect of "I don't think he's so bad." Columbo and Janeway lock eyes, and there's an immediate attraction. 😁😁😁😁😁

for main character, best actor don't try to force a role, they make the character as best as it can be, if they know it won't work, the smart one pull out rather trash the whole project.

Bujold was already 50 in this video, she probably didn't have any youthful vigor to draw upon, otherwise I loved her years earlier, especially in the movie Coma. She made the correct choice here.

You sugar coated Berman's dislike of Bujold. He never wanted her and did everything he could to get her to leave! And Mulgrew's hot romance was with the very director of Voyager!

Sad but true. The people running Voyager didn't even understand that an ensign is supposed to make lieutenant. Given that, it's amazing the show was as good as it was.

I wonder if she was struggling with unaddressed menopause symptoms. It can really throw off someone's confidence, especially if she had brainfog etc, and wasn't getting medical help. Not every woman suffers, but it can cause all the issues I'm seeing here in this take of the situation.

Bujold was a lot older than Mulgrew! They had to die Bujold's hair as she was already grey. It was too far along in Bujold's life to change how she worked, her life with a young child, and do that hectic schedule.

Linda Hamilton really made the wrong choice when she turned down Voyager, I know I would've watched, she would have made a Great Captain, and there wouldn't have been any lack of enthusiasm in her acting. Off the top of my head I can't think of 1 awesome part she's played since T2 until know. Here's an example of an actor becoming irrelevant after turning down a part.

Lindsay Wagner was a hot favourite for the role at the time and should have got it so we would have been spared Mulgrew impersonating Katharine Hepburn for 7 seasons
