Long ago before I knew anything about heroic archetypes and such I noticed that Star Wars was easily retold as a medieval story with only subtle changes to the main plot later I read that that is what inspired Alec Guinness to be involved, he didn't like sci fi but loved the chance to play an old knight

Jill, I have watched and enjoyed this video several times, but today it was particularly helpful. I am writing a memoir called, My Forever 30 Husband, which is about my relationship with my late husband Tim who died from an AIDS related illness and going through the grieving journey. When telling both of our back stories, I am trying not to provide information dumps. Instead, I am touching on both the highlights and lowlights in order to keep my readers' interest by keeping the story moving from vingett to vingett. Thank you for confirming that my instincts are correct. ☺❤

Tolkien ended up doing the same thing. The world was there already built when he did "The Hobbit", even if he wasn't trying to write about that world in the first place.

but it was not 100% built. Tolkein never really "finished" middle earth- he worked on it from at least 1917 until his death. When he wrote the Hobbit the parts from Silmarilion were not at the level that was published later. Things were changing- names ideas etc. What i think was good about Tolkein is that he created back story- created a story but did not closely link it to the back story and then when Lord of the Rings was made he was able to use the "history" of middle earth to add depth to it. He also did not ever go into to much detail about the distant past which is why so many readers are so determined to find out about all the other stuff. I remember being so curious about "Beren the One handed who fought creatures like She-lob in the mountains of terror when the world was young" or when Elrond talked about "the breaking of Thangorodrin" when he was young. But since Tolkein did not elaborate about it i would not know what that was about until i read the Silmarilian.

I thought it was interesting that there were two versions of _The Hobbit,_ the second making the ring the jumping off point for Lord of the Rings and retconning the first version as Bilbo's justification for possession of the ring.

@@sandal_thong8631 for a long time I wasn't aware of the first version; I originally encountered the 1965 edition.

Come to think of it, I suppose I definitely can live without "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull", since I watched it once and now I can't remember a single thing about it. Was there something about a fridge? I can't even say I remember that per se, I think I'm remembering an episode of Mythbusters trying to reproduce a scene with a fridge. Also, one of the best explanations of small worldbuilding I've ever found. And beautiful Leia buns!

It is oddly reassuring to me, who has been working on various scrapped drafts for a fantasy story for years, that A New Hope also went through many, very pretentious drafts till the end result came to be. And that it tells more with conveyance and less than info dumps. And 100% agreed with character-driven narrative!

Wait, a guitar flamethrower? How cool is that? Though a straight-up regular flamethrower would be awesome, too.

Rant Re: Infodumping and worldbuilding... I think a problem a lot of young writers face is that they treat worldbuilding like a checklist, just filling up on factoids without really considering whether or not they serve the story... Like they think detail = depth = immersion, which is a real shame! I could honestly go on and on about it for hours, but to put it simply... Luke's story wasn't written AROUND the Force. The Force was written to support Luke's story. The way the Force and the government and the technology work are not just window dressing or arbitrary worldbuilding choices. They are part of the moral "thesis statement" of the whole thing. Peace good, revenge bad, nature good, machines bad, etc etc etc. This can be said for most magic systems in beloved fantasy stories. (Lotr, Discworld, Harry Potter, Good Omens, etc.) The lore exists for a *practical* reason. Tl;dr, Don't look at your worldbuilding as a blank sheet of paper you need to fill up to achieve immersion. Look at it as an opportunity to explore the scope and depth of the story you are already trying to tell. Phew. Glad I got that out.

Hadn't see this older video, but it reminds me of a great art-history / movie-history quote in the form of Ambrose Bierce's 'The Devil's Dictionary' Worldbuilding-: verb- the action of a remaking an Akira Kurosawa film. See Steven Spielberg's Star Wars & The Hidden Fortress, see also Joh Sturges' Magnificent Seven & The 7 Samurai, see finally Sergio Leoni 's For a Few Dollars More & Yojimbo...

I feel like the commentary on the Prequels being hated has aged on a trajectory that nobody was expecting before the Sequel Trilogy came out.

Personally, I prefer a world with the Matrix sequels to one without (if only because it meant we got the Animatrix as part of the deal), but Highlander 2 is a great example of a sequel that wasn't needed and would have been better not existing - like the entire rest of the franchise pretends is the case.

As far as I'm concerned, after the first movie Highlander used his powers to put like-minded good people together to unify the world and end war.

Someone said _Star Wars_ was the movie of a decade if not generation. Sorry _Godfather Pt 1 & 2._ I agree with that and that _Empire Strikes Back_ is the best sequel of all time.
