I was the same when this show was first announced. I mean, an Cassian Andor spin-off? Sure I might check it out EVENTUALLY. But then sometime around 2020 I actually looked into _who_ was working on the show and it immediately became my most anticipated Disney+ project. I mean, a Star Wars political spy-thriller from two Academy Award-winning writer/directors and a bunch of HBO/BBC talent? Yes, please. I think if Andor has taught us anything is that it's often not the stuff you wanted, like an Obi-Wan or Boba Fett show, that really leaves its creative mark. It's the stuff you never KNEW you wanted.

But seriously though, memes praising the show aside, this series did these things to perfection: - Side characters are used intelligently, and aren’t completely incompetent. We feel that they have agency without stealing the show. - There are visual motifs that relate to Rogue One and they don’t come off as fan service. - Amazing soundtrack, and amazing cinematography. The digital composite work was invisible and high quality. - Production Design, holy moly. This world actually felt real! Actual sets! Great costumes, great work! - The writing is exceptional, if there was ever a book made with this level of writing I’d happily buy it. I’m happy that we are only getting one more season. Short and sweet is better than long and drawn out.

I love how Maarva was able to take part in the rebellion when her brick was used to smash that Imperial's face. She also opened up the tunnels under the hotel before she died, which allowed Andor to move through the town and save Bix. I also love Maarva's speech. It's like the Star Wars version of G'Kar's speech in Babylon 5: "No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom. Against that power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand." And Damar's speeches in DS9: "Citizens of Cardassia, hear me! The Dominion told you that the Rebellion has been crushed. What you have seen here today proves that that is yet another lie. Our fight for freedom continues, but it will take place here, in the streets. I call on Cardassians everywhere to rise up. Rise up and join me. I need you to be my army. If we stand together, nothing can oppose us. Freedom is ours for the taking! "
@Intranetusa

DS9 and Babylon 5 is great stuff. I will add some quotes from another great space epic called Legend of Galactic Heroes: Quotes from Yang Wenli: “An army is a tool for violence, and there are two kinds of violence…Violence to control and oppress, and violence as a means of liberation. You know, what we call a national army, is fundamentally the former example. It’s a pity, but history doesn’t lie. When those in power confront popular opposition, there aren’t many examples of the army siding with the people. Far from it, in the past, in country after country, the army itself evolved into a power structure, and came to control the people with violence.” "A nation doesn’t create individuals by cellular division. Instead, it is individuals with autonomous intent who gather to establish a nation. In a democratic society, it is axiomatic as to which one is the master and which the servant." "Even if you look at a mountain, if you only look at it from one direction, you can’t grasp the whole…Embodiments of evil don’t exist other than in television dramas…Maybe history will classify us not as good but as the evil camp…people aren’t strong enough to endure the recognition that they’re evil. Therefore, believing in their own righteousness, they fight to force their views on other people." "Constitutional government against totalitarianism, progressive democracy against intolerant despotism. Well, advocating such things, because they came to be put into practice as well, and if the Rudolf-like things are denied and buried by Prince Lohengramm, there’ll be no special reason why the Alliance should continue. Look, Julian. Just as people sometimes die, nations aren’t eternally indestructible things, either. The entities called nations are no more than simple tools. If you remember just that fact, maybe you can maintain your perspective."

For me the best scene of the episode was Cassian and Brasso meeting in the tunnel. Andor is filled with regret for not being there for Maarva. He's upset that the last conversation he had with his mother was an argument. It was so real. So human. It hit me so hard, starting with that long, comforting hug. Both of these men are grieving and it's wonderful that the show allows them to do that and The hammer guy had one job, did it well and got to Spartan kick a stormtrooper off. What a beast.

I agree. The Madalorian is like a thin comic book hero compared to the stories we're getting with the characters in Andor. Make it more of an anthology with different Mandalorians explore how each of their cultures differ and how they;re going to come together to reclaim Mandalore
@LizardSpork
@LizardSpork Жыл бұрын
The Mandalorian is your typical Disney offering - lots of easily quotable one liners, cute characters, jokes, memberries but little real substance. Andor is much more akin to HBO - long setup, deep nuanced character exploration and epic long speeches that sends shivers down your spin. In many ways it's harder to pull off an HBO type show in the scifan genre than it is in the contemporary setting, it's harder to get the audience to look pass the laser guns, the weird aliens and the space magic to identify the theme and characters that resonate with the modern audience, so massive kodus to the Andor writers to pulling it off. This makes me sad about how BoBF and OB1 dropped the ball, there were a lot of potential for great storytelling - criminal underworld, revenge, betrayal, guilt, persecution etc that demanded the HBO treatment rather than the Disney treatment. But I'm glad that at least we got this one.

Andor: The show nobody asked for but so many instead found it to be the best written, acted, directed piece of Star Wars since Empire Strikes Back, hell perhaps even better than that. Such a pleasure after some of the... disappointments we've had lately. And by the gods that speech Luthen gave regarding what he sacrifices. Finally the Empire is treated like a competent, scary, brutal organisation where stormtroopers can actually aim, their methods of detention and torture are horrifying and the ISB is terrifying. Its so wonderful to see the Empire treated as something more than cartoonishly evil. Its a pretty rare thing in Star Wars, but its one of the reasons I love the game TIE Fighter so much (and why I chose to remake it).

What i loved about this episode was they didn't go for the cheap writing option of Cyril turning up and ruining some ISB cunning plan by effectively being a clownish bad-guy, they maintained the believable fact that he was just obsessively trying to get some closure over Cassian and when he saw his crush in trouble he just manned up and did what he needed to do, but didn't even make a big deal about it. It's so nice to see "bad guys" actually portrayed well, the entire Imperial faction really feels like the oppressive, mechanical and viciously vindictive faction it was always supposed to me, but with enough understandable humanity to see where they all went "wrong" and allowed their fear and anger to justify all the horrible stuff they've been doing.

Woah woah woah, this was Kathleen Kennedy’s baby. I know it’s popular to hate on her, but this was the only Star Wars show where she served as an actual producer and had say over. The others she was just an executive producer. She signed on her friend Tony Gilroy, and gave him what he wanted. She was also the one who spearheaded the Rogue one reshoots and said all the characters were free to be killed off, because it served the story. So give credit where it’s due. You always hate the Empire, cause there the bad guys,but know you see it, Stormtroopers are scary now, firing at will hitting there targets of death. It's the first "real "Rebellion against the Empire" right in front of Luthen of all ppl, who's trying tio start one, but actually saw one is gold. The music was awesome from the funeral. (John Campea Show) talked about how i missed but makes sense now. The "ANDOR" Tittle for 12 weeks has a dif hint of a hmm, or music. buT aLl 12 episodes together that timbit of notes was the funeral song. WoW! Now that's good story telling, to even think about that

The music! See how everyone on Ferrix knew it by heart. It was used to save Bix' soul and life, and to have the "ghost" of Maarva speak to start the Rebellion in a real world, was brilliant. Syril in episode 3 is meant to parallel what Meero experiences in this episode and I love it. You can see the panic and shock on her face as everything falls apart around her just like he did, but when he rescues her he is totally focused and it snaps her out of it. She probably has a new found respect for him and doesn't think he's a total screw up. I expect these events were meant as a learning experience to show them that the rebels won't play by the rules and no matter how much planning you do and precautions you take, none of it will matter when everything goes to shit.

I also like how it proves Andor and Nemik right, in that the Empire's arrogance is exactly what provides them the openings to strike. Luthen’s scene of self reflection was so interesting. I think he knew he helped inspired the rebellion that took place on Ferrix because he said he knew the heist on Aldhani would bring about further oppression by the Empire which would breed rebellion. And remember Aldhani was the moment that inspired Maarva to take up arms against the Empire. I think Luthen in this moment of self reflection really realized the blood he had on his hands. Similar to Palpatine, he’s always been a character who operates from the shadows who rarely gets his hands directly dirty. He wants revenge for some wrong the Empire caused him, and he’s willing to sacrifice everything for it. In this moment though, by experiencing firsthand all the death his actions caused, he realized there are ways in which he’s no different than the Empire. Through the ends justify the means moral framework he’s adopted for the cause, he sees that in some ways he simply can’t distinguish himself from the evil of the Empire. I think he genuinely questioned the cause for a second during this moment. However, he is by this point to far gone and committed to the cause that there’s no going back for him.

Each mine usually had its own brass band, and processions often culminated into riots against the police. It was a very dark period of British history, which northern towns are still reeling from socially and economically.

But seeing rich politicians and corporations that keep screwing with the Empire get what they deserve would be nice to see as well. Maybe actually show the Empire in a good light during its early years before it fully transformed into an evil galactic superpower. The old EU portrayed this well in the comics and smaller story arcs. After all the serious external enemies like pirate guilds, defiant interstellar empires, "dangerous" alien civilizations and Separatist holdout states were neutralized, The Empire turned in on itself. It began persecuting, exploiting, and oppressing the very people it was formed from to protect, aid, and unify.

This show tied up most of the loose ends. Loved that the manifesto fitted into the plot of the finale as Cassian is listening to it the night before the funeral. Love that Bix Brasso and B2 escape in a believable manner with Pax's son ( who made the bomb) and the daughter of Ferrix. Cassin telling Luthen to take him in as the last scene was chefs kiss. I would have liked to have seen more Mon Mothma in the Senate, but seriously, she gets more intel at her dinner parties than she could get in the Senate. She really only agreed to a meeting between her daughter and Davo's son, a betrothal would be next, but it would be a couple of years before there was an actual marriage. Mon may just be stalling and may have a plan to get her daughter out of it eventually if the girl wants that. Also I love that Vel and Cinta were badass characters with well written parts who happened to be a lesbian interracial couple. Tony Gilroy was creating characters, not checking boxes.

Watch this show and then watch rogue one all the way through. This show accomplishes a few important feats. It's good in its own right. It's different, unique, dystopian and mature. Secondly, it's an emotionally compelling story about rebellion that gets you as a viewer invested in the politics of the universe it exists within. Lastly, it makes other stories its connected to feel more impactful. I already really love rogue one, but this show is going to turn that film into a masterpiece. This show and that movie paints a very different and moving picture of the rebellion. It wasn't a forgone conclusion that the good guys win in these stories. Quite the opposite, these characters sacrifice everything for a punchers chance.

My only questioning is about the search of his sister: they have spent a lot of energy and screentime on the first episodes about it but then got completely neglected. It might not be an interesting storyline but it seems that the whole show has been so well written that it cannot not be part of season 2. Otherwise, they have lost precious resources on that part. Also wished they would stick to the original 5 season storyline. Obviously this show being what it is won't pull as much money than others but goddamn it is so good. It would be bad to rush 4 years into 12 episodes.

My guess is that it was always intended to be brought up at the start and then dropped as something to return to in the second season. There was stuff going on with that planet, and with the ship crash, that I just don't think would have made sense to come back to in the relatively tight timeframe of season 1. Season 2 covers the remaining four years leading up to Rogue One. So to me it always made sense as something we'd come back to with some higher stakes related to the Rebellion.

Cassian stands for everyone who would join the rebellion. He is proof of "axis'" success. He was a normal guy who was just getting by under the Empire. He skirted the rules where he could and was content to just get by. But he got to a point where what he had to fight for was greater than his fear of the empires retaliation. Now he's all in after seeing what they've done to him, his loved ones, and his home. He is every citizen that chooses to rebel against the Empire. "Kill me or take me in."

I figured it out. This show is NEW Star Wars. What I mean this is what we were expecting as fans. Ties to the old, but new stories. It's not a retread, it's actual universe building. We get a LOT of the Empire's inner workings. I like it's not just "Crazy space army controlled by two wizards". I love grounded stuff like this. The good guys are also...not good. They are sympathetic, and real. They're generally good people, but they'll do some bad things. That sadly, is reality.

I think its kinda neat to see a sort of love thing within the imperials. You don’t get to really see that in these things which I find interesting. I like that they actually decided to keep his loyalty to the empire and his negative views of the rebellion remain the same.

The sacrifice Mon Mothma made is having to focus on things outside her family, to the point where her husband is the dominant influence in her daughter's life. He likes the old ways, whereas Mon Mothma knows the pitfalls of it. Due to her focus on getting the rebellion started she cannot provide the counter argument to the daughter being OK with an arranged marriage. The sacrifice was never about her forcing something unfortunate on her child, it was about being unable to prevent her child from wanting it.

So she is still sacrificing her own values and beliefs for her daughter who is still young and naïve. Syril has an obsession with power and romanticizes it. His mother is a micromanager and tries to control every part of his life while not seeing eye to eye with him whereas Dedra is powerful too but reflects his ambitions and goals- although I am still not 100% sure on whether Syril is actually a good guy and whether he will realize that Dedra is completely ruthless.

I'm not too worried about Iger coming in. Under his tenure Disney grew into what we know it as today. AND he admitted that he never should've rushed the sequels to meet those fiscal year deadlines, which are for those who don't know, divided into quarterly months, so months of three. So Q4 is towards the end of the year, which is when all the SW movies were out for those big numbers. But I think what Iger is really gonna focus up on, is fixing the Disney Park situation that Chapek really fcked up, and fixing the quantity over quality thing that Chapek ALSO shoved out due to the pandemic. All this, WHILE looking for someone to take over, as he's only going to be CEO for 2 years. Disney really needs someone at the helm who understands what the company IS. And for the CEO to be saying things like "adults don't watch animated movies" when just the previous CEO completely saved Walt Disney Animation Studios from going under....NOT a good look. No wonder he was kicked out by the board.

We've already seen the same Imperial Droid briefly before Cassian got taken to custody, but obviously the real K-2 needs to show up eventually since he was reprogrammed and started serving Cassian + the Rebellion at some point before Rogue One happened. Director Krennic could also appear in Season 2 of Andor, maybe towards the end of the series since we still have Karn and Meero to work with. And lastly, I'm pretty sure not only will Saw Gerra appear in Andor again, but he could have a slightly bigger role since Andor would be the last thing for the character to have some more impact before his final appearance in Rogue One.
