Same, I had an EGM magazine too that talked about it and showed pics of what the characters looked like and some maps. But yeah, then it was canceled. In a later magazine they said the BF3 graphics we're too good. That they couldn't wait for PC/Console market to catch up. And they wouldn't make enough sales on the people that could run it on their PC.

Only time in my life that I would reliably wake up early in the morning. My parents let me play video games for only an hour a day, and since it was on the family computer there were usually a lot of interruptions if someone else needed it, or they wanted to me to do a chore. Ah man, I can't even describe the level of joy BF2 brought me as a child. Playing split screen with my brother or friends was the best. I still have the game for my PS2, but original Xbox owners have the advantage because they could do 4 player split screen, but even with the multi-tap PS2 won't allow it. Galactic Conquest is by far my favorite game mode, and I think it's a shame that no modern shooter has come close to replicating it. Games today are repetitive, expensive, and get boring fast... Enemy Territoy by Wolfenstein was another excellent shooter back in those days
@platyhelminthes2877

@@wjgreep It's not a shooter, but Empire at War kind of fills a similar niche to galactic conquest. As a strategy game, the gameplay isn't even remotely similar, but it's fun, it's star wars, and you can conquer the galaxy system by system.

There's of course the ability to go prone didn't return. Dogfighting in the sky of a planet didn't return. 2 of 4 commands for being in and out of a vehicle didn't return as well. Having Tusken Raiders going against the factions of the galaxy didn't return.

Thank you for this video, I recently revisited BF2 with my girlfriend to see if it held up and it absolutely does, the fact that it has active multiplayer servers nearly 20 years later is nothing short of amazing. The first Battlefront is was originally got me into gaming as some of the earliest memories I had as a kid was sitting with my dad watching him play. One night he had to work late and I called him saying to come home because I wanted to watch him play, he told me I could just play myself and that blew my mind and started my on my journey into video games. This video brought back some really good memories as I haven't managed to replay BF1 yet but the editing and commentary (especially the end montage) were fantastic.

That's so cool. Reminds me of when I was little, I wanted to play Super Mario 64 but was too scared to leave the starting area of Bob-omb Battlefield because of the Goombas surrounding the platform where you spawn, so I would get my dad to play and watch him. One day I worked up enough courage to venture out and realized for the first time how easy it was to jump on the Goombas and kill them, and I was never afraid of the game from then on. 🙂 (except for the creepy piano monster lol) BF1 was such a fun game. I would queue up instant action matches as a sort of little "story", try to survive as long as possible as one soldier, have last stands against hundreds of bots, all kinds of stuff. I miss that true "sandbox shooter" era of gaming, before things like monetization, cosmetics, live service, hero shooters, etc...

My favorite part of the original Battlefront 1 (and to a lesser extend the sequel) was the 3rd faction. Sometimes allied to one of the main factions (like the ewoks and wookies), sometimes allied to everyone (the jawas), and my personal favorite, hostile to everyone (the tusken raiders and the gamorreans). I loved Dune Sea for the chaos the tuskens added, and it's still my favorite map of any of the Battlefront games (modern and original). I wish more shooters would include 3rd factions like that.

The original Battlefront was so great and I was very disappointed when they removed the best maps (like Rhen Var and Kashyyyk Docks and Bespin Platforms) in favor of things like Jabba’s Palace and that moonbase one that were much less fun. I didn’t care for the Jedi gameplay much either. Thankfully you can get mods for BF2 now which bring the older maps back into BF2. Also the newer Battlefront II is actually a lot of fun tbh. A small thing that went uncovered, I missed how Squad Commands were dumbed down in the second game. You could tell AI in the first game to follow you, advance, hold position, and spread out. In the second game, it's just follow or spread out, and the AI will very rigidly fall into a formation that copies your movement inputs, making friendly fire easy if it's on (your rank also determined how many you could command, up to 4). It could be useful to make AI follow you to capture objectives so you had a little backup. First person in BF1 was also way more polished

I had played these games as a kid at a friends house, and when I finally got them for myself, I put HOURS into them. I think something a lot of people look over in the retrospectives on these games is the difference in AI between 2004 and 2005. 2004’s AI wasn’t perfect, but IMO a VAST improvement compared to 2005. For me nowadays, that really sways my choice in 2004’s favor when I revisit these games because l have to use my brain instead of just going on a mindless killing spree

Literally a trip down memory lane as I’m spending my last few minutes of free time before work. I was hooked on both these games and I still holly them on steam with some good mods. Some are allowing NPC heroes in battlefront 2 on both sides that run around instead of forcing the player to always play as the hero. The OG battlefront now has mods that allow you to change the clone armor to famous legion within the GAR.

It's remarkable that these games came out 20 years ago and still look this good, have more content than games that come out today, and actually functioned out of the box without a year or two of updates and patches. I also figured out you could land a ship on top of heroes in BF1 and that was hilarious.

Thank you for making this nostalgic video. It really felt like I was back in the old days for 30min straight. Best parts where when I remembered small details I forgot about. I was lucky enough to play both games on my ps2 with and against my brother. The funny thing is that back then I was already blown away by the graphics, mechanics and so on and was even more excited for the future of gaming. I only realize now that we already had the best times. Wow what a ride

Maaaaaan, these 2 games are so underrated!! I also spent hours on both of them. The 1st thing I did when got my Xbox Series S was to look for some of my old games from the previous Xbox consoles (which I didn't have anymore) in the online store. I found and immediately bought SW:BF II and it came with the DLC's included which I hadn't played before. Still play it to this day.

First person on Xbox for battlefront 2 was also dumbed down from Battlefront 1 on Xbox. In the first one, when you are in first person you can see the detail inside the vehicles and its pretty cool change to the hud. In battlefront 2 you don't get any of that.

I used to play BF2 and the lego games when I was younger, damn they were good games, truly a golden age of gaming. Nowadays I struggle to find anything fun to play, and I can guarantee that it is not because I have grown up, but rather because the current games are not as good anymore. It feels like games before were made because the developers enjoyed making them and now it is only to get money.
