I just mean that this version and the one we eventually got are so different that comparing them is kinda pointless. Sure: this one is by far the most efficient, deadly and strategic one. But the other Grievous wasn't meant to be all that, he wasn't meant to be a cold and calculation killing machine that you couldn't stop if you threw a hurricane at him. He was meant to be a self-confident, proud and somewhat cowardly general that tends to run away when things don't go in his favor. He therefor wasn't mean to be taken as seriously as the other one. Still, for what this Grievous was intended, he is doing a perfect job of it.

For me, it is an exemple of what I call "Early Canon" (just came up with it). It is when the portrayal of a character based on their first appearances differs greatly from how the character turned out in later appearances. Another exemple of that is Bobba Fett's backstory in the early Marvel Star Wars comics as a soldier in the clone wars (which were also portrayed as different to what turned out from Attack of the Clones forward). An interesting alternate take on a character, a "what could have had been" if you will. EDIT: Actually, "Proto-canon" would be a better term.

The reason Grievous is so powerful here, as well as why his voice is so different is because when they this series started production the movie version hadn't been finalized or cast yet (in fact, Grievous inclusion was a last minute thing- this final battle was originally supposed to be Durge returning which is why Durge was shown to survive the earlier episodes), so they didn't know how he would sound (or that he would be coughing) yet, nor exactly how his fighting capabilities would function. They mostly just had the concept art (which is also why Grievous has a white cape here instead of the darker one he has in the film and the 3D series) and the knowledge that he collected the lightsabers of the Jedi he killed (per his line in the Episode III screenplay) so they took this overwhelming Jedi hunter approach here.

@lusotuber6 жыл бұрын
This is not "proper" Grievous. This is an innacurate interpretation of Grievous. This is not how he's supposed to be. This is Genndy's interpretation of the character based on concept art that George had approved at the time for Revenge of the Sith. The Jedi are out-of-character here too, since they aren't supposed to be afraid. The Clone Wars didn't neuter anyone. It stayed true to the movies thanks to the involvement of Lucas himself. That some people may like this over the top version is one thing. To call it proper is objectively false. This is not how the creator of the character envisioned it.
@Ayrton_Chitwood6 жыл бұрын
@@lusotuber Well, this time the creator was actually wrong in my opinion. Lucas should've made grevious a threat like he is here. It would've made him a more imposing villain, and would've made his appearance in both the movies and the later clone wars series far more palpable. It is a far more iconic and terrifying villain than anything Lucas put in the prequels, and I actually like the prequels in terms of their world building, especially BOTH clone wars series. But in this case, the production team for ROTS should've just followed Gendy's interpretation.
@Ultimaton1006 жыл бұрын
LusoTuber No, TCW did neuter a number of iconic prequel-era characters, General Grievous among them. It’s not Genndy’s fault Lucas didn’t share his alleged “vision” for Grievous when he was given the character concept and design to work with. What Genndy fleshed out here IS the original, one and true General Grievous. The novels and comics portrayed him like this as well. It wasn’t until the movie and TCW that Grievous was retconned into a cliche cartoon villain. In reality, that’s all TCW was, a cliche Saturday morning child’s cartoon. Star Wars was going downhill with story and character portrayal long before Disney bought it.
@lusotuber6 жыл бұрын
Ayrton Chitwood: What?! No, the creator is not wrong about his own creation. That you happen to like someone else's interpretation doesn't make the creator's vision wrong. It simply means you didn't like it. Grievous is not meant to be who you would like him to be. He's meant to be who he actually is, as established in Revenge of the Sith and The Clone Wars by Lucas. That's all there is to it.
@lusotuber6 жыл бұрын
Bleeding Eye Watcher: TCW didn't neuter anyone. It stayed true to the characters, thanks to Lucas' supervision. And nobody faulted Genndy of anything. He had limited information about the character and used his imagination to make his own interpretation. But that's all it is: an interpretation. The "original, one and true General Grievous" is the one envisioned by Lucas and that was fully revealed in Revenge of the Sith and TCW. Not this or any other Expanded Universe fan fiction. That you happen to like fan fiction is irrelevant to what the proper version of the characters truly are.

Before the 2nd Clone Wars series was made, much of what we knew of the actual war was from the books and this short animated series. In both, many of the stories were very somber in nature, focusing on how the war was changing everyone who fought in it. Grievous was made to be this Jedi killer and great general who was a real threat, something that, while hinted at in the second series, was often overshadowed by his many failures. BTW, if anyone likes the portrayal of Anakin in this series and want a different take on his time just before his ascension to knight, read Star Wars: Jedi Trials, the novel does a good job of showing Anakin in the early Clone Wars, his portrayal being quite close to this series, though one can see the second series' Anakin in it too. Its not part of the Disney storyline, but none of the media they have currently contradicts it either, and I personally love the Expanded Universe novels.

The reason why Grievous is so badass in this is because the entire microseries seriously amped up the power scaling of literally everything, especially Jedi...everything in this series is ridiculously OP, which is great for action but not much else...we saw how Windu solo’d the entire droid army without his lightsaber, just by punching and force abilities. If Jedi were that OP then what’s the point of clones? Also think about how clones would be able to kill Jedi if they were as OP as we see here. Also in regards to Grievous in ROTS, let’s not downplay Obi Wan’s Skills here...don’t forget that he’s essentially one of the best Jedi in the Order, only below Windu and Yoda, that’s why he was sent to face Grievous. And a master of Soresu, his defenses are nigh unbreakable, which is how he’s capable of blocking all 4 of Grievous’ arms attacking at once so quickly. So in reality, Grievous wasn’t that weak in the movie, it’s just that Obi Wan is an incredibly skilled Jedi. Also there is a scene later on in the microseries (I don’t think I wanna spoil it though) that actually makes sense when you apply it to ROTS and the 2008 Clone Wars series, explaining why Grievous doesn’t appear as OP compared to the non canon 2003 series. So just keep an eye out and pay attention to the dialogue, it gives some great insight on that. I’ll probably explain it further when you get to that point anyways.
@revanruler64046 жыл бұрын
you're right however tcw shouldn't have nerfed grievous this much (he should still be on jedi master level and easily be able to kill a jedi knight or a padawan)
@snakeboy19126 жыл бұрын
Revan Ruler I mean, he did still kill Nadar...plus I’m sure you know about the scene I’m talking about, where a certain someone tells Grievous that he needs to have certain elements in order to achieve victory against the best of the Jedi, and as we see, he rarely has those elements which means no advantage... Also let’s remember that his victory against a handful of these Jedi hinges on both his advantage through those specific elements that give him the advantage, and the fact that those Jedi were already very tired and weak, unlike most of the fights Grievous had in TCW, with Jedi who were pretty much in prime condition, or had plot armor because they were in ROTS or something else
@SpiderandMosquito4 жыл бұрын
It's already been said by others but they were still figuring out Grievous as a character so the show only had so much information about him so came up with this. While I agree that the film version was inferior to this I'm glad that this isn't actually the canon version of the character; I know, sounds blasphemous but hear me out. In this show for amazing as he is, he comes off as sorta Poor Man's Maul. The film version of the character and the more fleshed out canon Clone Wars cartoon may be more goofy but he's absolutely a different type of villain than all the others. Here he's just Darth Maul 2.0 and I do admit to having a soft spot for smiley, cantankerous mustache twisting villains.

Even though I love the 2008 clone wars, I do think that grievous is much better in this show.

This show was the best, but thanks to Disney this may or may not be cannon.

It’s quite a shame you had to cut in this video because as far as I am aware this show doesn’t get flagged as bad on KZbin as you would might expect since you can find it in its entirety on KZbin
