What do you guys prefer, Eclipse Class or Executor Class? Gotta be the Executor for me, that superlaser is impressive without a doubt, but I just love the Executor's design.

Spacedock Honestly, I'm in favor of a third design - the Bellator-class Star Dreadnought. Termed a 'Pocket Dreadnought', it was smaller than an Executor, and a slight bit less heavily armed and armored (still boasting thousands and thousands of Turbolaser and Turboion cannons, hundreds or ordinance launchers, and multiple hangers to hold a steady compliment of strike craft and fighters), it was faster than the Executor, had greater range, a better hyperdrive rating (Class 1.5 for the Bellator, vs. Class 2.0 for an Executor), required a little more than half of the fuel an Executor used, was far less mantinence intensive (this is also why most starship classes larger than a Destroyer were abandoned post- Yuuzhan Vong War, as the larger the vessel was, it's mantinence costs increased exponentially), more reliable, and was able to basically fill the same role as an Executor. They never gained major noteriety in the Imperial Navy, however, since their military doctrine was mostly focused on intimidation and fear, as opposed to actual combat use. The Executor, while big and powerful, was not as good at straight up ship-to-ship combat despite its larger arsenal due to less efficient placement of the weapons, but since every Imperial officer wanted to intimidate their opponents instead of fight them, the sheer size of an Executor made them the preferred choice.

viralshadow Damn right it is. On Galactic Conquest, I only got almost 2/3rds of the galaxy by the Empire. I managed to use the Death Star to conquer a few of the more heavily fortified planets before it was destroyed by IG-88. The rest of the galaxy was divided by either the Rebellion or the Consortium.

I've long held the empire would have been much better off using the resources put toward the two death stars toward building a fleet of super star destroyers including Executor, Eclipse & Sovereign class super star destroyers, as well as as well as a fleet of support ships, mainly consisting of a new version of the Imperial star destroyer whose weapon loadout was to defend against large numbers of star fighters, which was the main threat the empire was facing during this time. Basically you build the empire's fleet into a number of battle-groups, each built around an Executor super star destroyer and those can be backed up as needed by smaller but more specialized fleets centered on Eclipse and/or Sovereign super star destroyers This not only would have resulted in a massive, powerful and extremely impressive naval fleets, but it would also be far more useful, effective and resilient as well. For example if one Eclipse were to be taken down, even if the emperor was on-board, you would still have a considerable presence of high level brass to assume command, as opposed to having all your brass on a single station so if it goes not only do you loose your leader, but you've also lost the bulk of the navies upper command level officers, which makes regaining control of the battle, and the empire, much more difficult, if not impossible

Yeah, blowing up a planet, while very showy is stupid, sure you can mine the asteroid fiends to get some of the resources back, but I imagine it would make everything much more difficult. And showy describes the death stars wonderfully, as they were all but useless as designed. I mean they would be great on the one or two times you wish to destroy and entire planet, but how often is that going to be what you want to do? At least make it useful for fleets and basically have it sort of a crescent moon with a shipyard with facilities capable of major repairs for star destroyers and other spacecraft. (think of the unfinished section of death star 2 but cut inward more and with a purpose.

Maybe, although one might make a case that by keeping them from being built as the ultimate secret doomsday weapon and more a uber fleet weapon I would be saving their lives, as the secrecy needed to build a giant death machine resulted in them, and their entire population being gassed and killed off.

I only recall reading about the Eclipse Class in the Dark Empire comics. That Eclipse-class met its end when a cloned Emperor Palpatine lost control of his "Force Storm" power (with a little help from Luke and Leia). The cataclysmic storm turned on its maker, utterly annihilating the Eclipse.

GloomGaiGar Sorry, no. Simple answer is the ships of Star Wars all fire THROUGH their shields. But that isn't even why I came back to reply: If this ship could ram other ships using its energy shielding, it wouldn't even matter how armored the hull is! Furthermore, any ship with sufficiently strong shielding would also be able to ram! In fact all you'd have to do is build a tiny ship with massively overpowered shield generators and it could trash capital ships by cutting through them. To that end, we have to assume the ship is using its own armored metal bulk to plow into other ships and NOT letting the energy shields form the "edge" of impact. Coincidentally as a physicist I should tell you that in space, speed of impact would matter much more than mass anyway. EDIT: I'm giving this WAY more thought than the designers probably did. I'm sure they just drew a nose like the bow of an actual sailing ship and thought "This looks like it could slice through other ships! Cool!" It's a fool's errand trying to apply real world logic to Star Wars, let's just enjoy it for what it is: Impressive looking!

If I'm not mistaken, I believe that the shields in Star Wars have to be dropped in small areas near the weapon station to be fired effectively (like in Star Wars : Thrawn). I also do not believe that shields protect against any weapon that isn't plasma or a laser, i.e. Mass Drivers or the Hammerhead scene in Rogue One. As for your statement about the corvette with overpowered shields, I don't think such a ship could have an onboard shield generator that size, but that's pure speculation. I'm not 100% sure though, so correct me if I'm wrong.

Good video! However, with its 17.5km length, this would still have to put the Executor at its original length of 8km. Canonically, the Executor class is now 19.5km, which means they'd have to ramp up the size of the Eclipse considerably.

I have to say the Eclipse is my preference. Not only did it have more supplemental systems than the Executor (The superlaser, and the multiple gravity well projectors to name a few) it was so durable it could RAM enemy ships! This thing was a beast of a ship!

It was enough to crack through Coruscant's planetary shield and devastate a large portion of the city below. The super laser isn't as powerful as the Death Star's because it doesn't need to be, why waste an entire planet when you can crush all hope of resistance on that planet by obliterating a single city and the area around it.

Rae Sloane, Hux and his father, alongside the majority of the Imperial Remnant followed coordinates into the Unknown Regions recovered from Gallius Rax after his assassination by Sloane over Jakku (which he had received as part of Palpatine's plan to destroy the Empire and the Rebel Alliance in case of his and Vader's death) which led the to the Eclipse.

To be fair, it would not have any effect on an ISD either. A tractor beam from a single minor vessel is also not enough to pull an Executor class into the gravity of a planet. Star Wars is a nice and glorious fairy tale but there is not much logic there.

People keep quoting that 500 turbolasers number even though it is incorrect, it has 500 turbolaser BATTERIES holding an unknown number of turbolasers in each. The normal star destroyer had batteries of 6 as its main weapons and the Executor it is 8 in each battery.

Eclipse was actually supposed to be twice as long as the Executor. Originally the executor was meant to be only 8000 meters long, but it was changed to 19000 by the lists. I’m pretty sure it’s actually canon that the executor is 8000 meters long. The eclipse was never sized up, so it’s shorter than it should be canonically.

The shield around the Death Planet wasn't "negated" by the Falcon travelling in hyperspace, it had a "fractional refresh rate", Han just timed his jump so that he was able to slip the Falcon through the momentary gap created as the shield refreshed.

In canon stories the Emperor had an unspecified type of super star destroyer with the same name as his flagship and it was sent into the unknown regions. Still a massive firepower as its about 8% of the total DS firepower...and as we saw in Rogue One even a minuscule fraction of its power was able to destroy a continent and render a planer unhabitable

Could you do the Separatist Recusant light destroyer or the Acclamator soon, or maybe the Praetorian battlecruiser? Love the clone wars era, and really enjoy the series. Executor by the way, i rember watching empire strikes back for the first time and the moment the shadow rolls over the ISD, an amazing scene then i learned an ISD is a mile long... "Wait a sec... Vader's ship is how big?"

I'm curious. wasn't this ship made canon in one of the new novel? I remember hearing about a passage that talked of a small scout fleet of the Empire find the emperor's flag-ship in the unknown reigons.

What is the purpose of that upside-down tower thing sticking out of of the underside of the craft at the very front? It looks fragile compared to the rest of the ship. I've seen things like this on a couple of other ships, but I'm not sure what they are for.
