Not necessarily, this is often either ignored, or often not discussed when talking about intergalactic travel in the SW universe. In the book Outbound Flight, there was an attempt (I won't include spoilers) but let's just say it was not a failure of the project. Also, not discussed as well is the fact the Yuuzon Vong ARE from another galaxy and were only forced to use sublight (at the cost of thousands of years of travel) to reach the SW galaxy. It is explained that they did not have a hyperspace navigation point to actually use hyperspace. Also many books allude to the possibility that some smugglers and others have indeed left the galaxy and survived to tell about it. Look up Vuffi Raa, a "friend" of Lando Calrissian who in addition to being a type of droid is also a member of an intergalactic species known as the Silentium. They and the Abominor are believed to be the races responsible for the xenophobia and destruction of the original Yuuzon Vong homeworld.

From the global Legends pile of stories, it seems that an ancient, extremely advanced race ruled once the central part of the Galaxy. They were suspected to have left Centerpoint station after engineering the Corellian system. With such abilities, it is not impossible that this race saw the rise of the dark Rakatas on Lehon, and tried to stop them by engineering the Tangle and other celestial walls between their realm and the Rakatas. But the Rakatan empire did go around or through it, possibly after it began to weaken or simply because it was like the Maginot line : quite easy to go around after all. Since the Tangle was supposedly engineered to stop any regular crossing, it isn't quite a surprise that the « core » civilisations didn't cross it. But that's right : it's funny to see how they didn't really care to go around themselves, if it wasn't for sherpa Thrawn's initiative ; and he was a local. Was the galactic population culturally afraid of the Unknown Regions, it's dark past and the myths and legends that surely persisted long after the Rakatan demise ?
@JohnGeorgeBauerBuis3 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that the Celestials were the architects of Centerpoint Station (and at least some of them became the Ones, the Father, Son, and Daughter, and who adopted Abeloth as the Mother before her betrayal and exile) also created the Tangle, due to fear of the Mnggal-Mnggal.
@Versudan6 жыл бұрын
Most of this seems pretty reasonable, but there's one big flaw in this, and that's the location of Rakata Prime.The Rakatan Infinite Empire spanned the entire galaxy during their time. It's not possible for a race to rule the whole galaxy from the unknown regions without having mapped out at least one reliable hyperspace lane from their part of the Unknown Regions to the core worlds.

TIE Fighter because for it to be unknown, it needs to be uncharted. Without charts, no one knows what goes on in there since they don't know what it looks like And to chart the place, you need really good cartographers and explorers to actually explore it. And since barely anybody wants anything to do with that side of the galaxy (besides the Emperor and his post-mortem Contingency.) so it's still unknown.

After playing No Man's Sky for about 80 hours, I can absolutely confirm that any kind of "solo mapping of the galaxy" is practically impossible. Even with tens of thousands of people having played the game, I haven't even arrived at a star system that another player has discovered before. So without the vast effort of a huge empire, I can totally understand it going largely unexplored for millenia.
@someguy432105 жыл бұрын
But you can find what you're looking for if you have coordinates, which I used to visit various populated areas in the galaxy, and even to locate a single specific star. The game was much more fun without teleportation. At first they didn't allow players to leave a star system if they used portal to get there. Now you can just just portal to the center of the galaxy in one go. Took me about a hundred of blackhole jumps to reach the center.

We know here on Earth what the closest solar system to us is and how long it would take us to get there with our current tech. If Jakku was the starting point for The Empire to venture out into the Unknown Regions, you'd travel to the solar system closest to it first, and then go from there... Really nice content! From a scientific viewpoint the whole Star Wars Galaxy has a big mistake, though. In Galaxies the core region of the galaxy is the region with the dangerous radiation, the black holes, the gravity anomalies and so on. That's why life is possible on earth. It is out there in a remote side arm, where life like we know it is possible because there is lot of space between stars and thus not in a constant danger of being wiped out by the next gamma ray burst or supernova or similar things. So basically... the whole Star Wars Galaxy is kind of backwards. The core is the life friendly zone and the rim is the dangerous zone. It should be the other way round

I'm not buying the probe idea. Both the Old Republic and Empire had the resources to do it. And like you said, it sounds like the Emperor was doing it. Probably in an attempt to locate the aliens invading from outside the Galaxy. But when it comes to the EU, its just a writing tool. They were probably saving the unknown lands in case they wanted to expand the lore. Much like Star Trek did with the Gamma/Delta Quadrants. That also brings up the issue that, for a history that's suppose to span hundreds of thousands of years, you'd think they would invent a new type of faster than light travel system. Again, they can make cloaking devices, planet sized super lasers, giant walking cities....but Star Trek style warp drives or dark matter elude them? Yeah, not buying that either.

@Masterge777 жыл бұрын
I'm glad that I know another Star Wars fan who is very fascinated by the Unknown Regions. Star Trek already explored part of it's galaxy's own "Unknown Regions" (aka. the Delta Quadrant) in Voyager, but Star Wars has yet to really explore their uncharted parts of space. The new trilogy seems to be wanting to explore a bit of it though, since we know Starkiller Base (which may or may not be Ilum) was based in the Unknown Regions, and that the First Order has a presence there.
@onlypeaceindeath7 жыл бұрын
Actually, if we go by Attack of the Clones there is no such thing as the Unknown Regions in Star Wars unless we're talking deep extragalactic space. The conversation between Obi-Wan and the librarian in the movie made it quite clear that there are no unexplored parts in the local galactic cluster.

In the tales of the Jedi comic, they had independent explorers looking for new hyperspace routes. The story I refer to involved dav and jori daragon (I think). They end up finding korriban and captured by the sith. In the Jedi path book, the Jedi had a corps of explorers looking for new places. You are right, it is dangerous work.

I love the Unknown Regions version in Canon. What I like about this uncharted section of the galaxy is how much we don't know about it. This to me adds a lot of mystery like a creepypasta. It's essentially like the Bermuda Triangle in space.

They probably were used to optimized Imperial probe missions. Space is a big place, and new discoveries can be made even in otherwise mapped areas, especially if different parties are looking for different things.

The difficulty of exploration with the Hyperdrive is one of the aspects that I think would be fertile ground for a Star Wars/Trek crossover. By 2381, the Federation has the far more accurate (if unrefined) Quantum Slipstream, which would be perfect for exploring the unknown region...and probably getting into space brawls with the Vagaari and Ssi Ruuk!

Historically towns are created when there is a massive sufficient and reliable food source is available or being maintained, that people can stay stationary in one place for a long time. Rivers(any large source of water), oasis, fertile plains for farms, and trade routes where food is exchange can create a town. It's food that influence their creation usually.

I always figured that they were the "unknown regions" because they were A: The later regions to be explored (after galactic wars took place, therefore losing precedence) and B: There's fewer safe hyperspace lanes available.

@imperatoriacustodum46676 жыл бұрын
Eck, I think a lot of people like the Unknown Regions because they're unknown, there are many mysteries in there. It both kind of represents our fears, our fear of not knowing what could be lying in wait out there, while also representing our want to explore, to make the unknown known, it's kinda clever if you think about it that way. (That, or I'm overthinking everything once again)
