It looks like the contra isn't the one playing all those low notes, rather they are holding up the bass with a tuba-like sound, and the people playing the realllyyy low notes are some of the regular bass trombones. Just letting you know!

@@henryprice7817 They are also using organ (note the organist at the console in the top center). Some of the low stuff (notably later on) is from the organ, but the contrabass trombone was octave doubling the bass trombones in quite a few places (that means it was playing the same line as the basses an octave lower). The real tell of the contrabass in this recording is the 'snarl' on some of the low notes. It's not the same quality of tone as the actual bass trombones that low (there's I think, at least 1 pedal D, on the 5th ledger line in the contrabass trombone in there).

Yes, it's quite recognizable if you compare the size of the part of the Trombone that is behind the player (it's notably longer, as it's an F contra, and so needs about another 50% more pipe length to be pitched a perfect 4th lower than a Bass Trombone).

Man, 1:58 really does sound like Ren's theme in the sequels. And I remember watching a video on how both Rey's and Ren's theme have identical notes as in the emperor's theme, so he was teased to return from the very beginning of the sequels. 😂

My guess is, with the alto-trombones, it is all the range the arranger wanted to convey. A soprano might add the real high notes and brightness as trumpets, but if the highest notes "needed" in this arrangement are reached with altos, theres no need

TopRacer 15317 when you use a soprano you move away from the classic tone which defines a trombone. And as a trombone choir that’s the last thing you want to do :)
